The new service kicks off with the May 10th Art walk and will travel among the clusters of participating venues. The brightly colored bus comes from Holyoke Community College and is called La Guagua, the little bus. The shuttle seats 20 and is wheelchair accessible. Initial service will be available from 5-7 PM and have four stops. The service may expand depending on the number of riders and the location of each month's participating venues. Stops for the May 10th Art Walk Easthampton are at Eastworks on Pleasant Street, at Blue Guitar Gallery on Northampton Road, at Old Town Hall on Main Street and on Cottage Street by the Nashawannuck Dam. During the two-day event, participating artists must paint within the city limits of Easthampton at an outdoor location. The freshly completed works will be exhibited at Nashawannuck Gallery beginning May 10 with a grand prize winner and a people’s choice winner announced during that evening’s Art Walk Easthampton. “The Connecticut River Valley has a long history of plein air painting,” says Marlies Stoddard, manager of Nashawannuck Gallery and the event’s organizer. “A Paint Out seemed like a natural extension of this proud artistic history and contributes to the growing recognition of Easthampton as an arts community.” Oils, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media/painting works are accepted. The Easthampton Paint Out begins with the stamping of your blank canvas at Nashawannuck Gallery. Stamping begins at 11 am Thursday, May 8th and continues during normal gallery hours through Saturday, May 10th at 11 am. "These are items you won't find in the malls," says co-organizer Michael Crawford, noting that the event is a great way to find holiday gifts. "And just as each work of art is unique, so is the story behind it." Live music is a vital part of each Art Walk and this month's line-up includes the Carol Abbe Smith Jazz Ensemble, Boston-based folk singer Chris Wilhelm, the rhythmic beats of the Psychic Tribal Orchestra, Latin-inspired music from duo Clay Jazz, and Americana folk music by Aric Bieganek. All performances are free and held in conjunction with interesting art shows that include photography, painting, mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, custom furniture, jewelry and craft items.
