How the time flies[ Originally published on: Friday, October 12, 2007 ] EASTHAMPTON - How the time flies. A culture and arts event started in the city by two San Francisco transplants a year ago has flourished into a successful monthly tradition that organizers say benefits both artist and business. This month's Art Walk Easthampton, which takes place Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. marks the year anniversary of the walk, and organizers say it will be extra special. "If anyone is interested in exploring the art walk, this is a terrific time to do it," said Michael Crawford, a photographer who, after moving to the city from San Fransisco, said that he and his partner Tom Hanus saw Easthampton as a perfect location for an artwalk. So they went ahead and organized it. "There were a lot of artists, a lot of retail establishments that were interested in showing art, and it seemed like the logical thing to do," he said by telephone Thursday in between handing out maps and flyers for the anniversary walk. Growing steadily The event began with 11 venues hosting various artists, now averages 20 venues and has a waiting list of artists from around New England wanting to participate. A total of 232 individual artists have participated in the last year. "Word of mouth is very powerful," Crawford said. This Saturday's walk is particularly poignant, Crawford said, as there will be a musical tribute to Frank Lucchesi of Lucchesi Vintage Instruments, who passed away last week. Lucchesi had hosted musicians in previous artwalks. Crawford attributed the event's success thus far to the fact that it allows artists to pitch their own work and store owners to decide what sort of artist they want to host. "It gives them the opportunity to bring to the forefront what they think is interesting," Crawford said. Nashawannuck Gallery owner Marlies Stoddard, who this month is hosting Colombian painter Viviana Puello, has participated in the past eight art walks. Stoddard said that though the event started off small, Crawford and Hanus convinced her to take part. "They are the most enthusiastic, convincing salespeople ever," she said. "We just had to participate." Stoddard said that the event has become popular with families seeking something "fun, educational, and intellectual" to do on a Saturday night. "I think it's going to be the most successful art walk yet," she said. Venues taking part in the walk are located in establishments throughout the city.
