Past Art Walk February 10, 2007

Venue:
Valley Art Supplies
Address:
76 Cottage St
Event:
My paintings are done mostly with acrylic. I get my ideas through visual pictures I see in my head when I am in the between stages of wakefulness and sleep. I started painting in 2005, when my 3rd child was conceived; before then, I had never even picked up a paintbrush before. The feeling of creating something is very exciting to me, and I feel almost as if I’ve given birth to something. I try to keep the images that are light, colorful, and positive, because I feel there is enough darkness in the world. Although, I never know how a painting will turn out until it is finished.

Venue:
Awen Tree
Address:

Event:
My paintings are currently exploring the connection between people and nature, especially through the connection to animal totems. In each of the Totem paintings, a light-filled mandala is present; signifying the light and energy that animal brings to the world and shares with us as part of the web of life. Some paintings, like Golden Eagle Woman, show a person as part of the animal, embodying their spirit. It is my hope that others can feel the personality of the animals and birds I paint and relate to each creature as an individual as well as an archetype.

Simultaneously as I am painting the Totem series, I am painting aspects of the Goddess and the God. Because of my own connection to tattoos, being a tattoo artist as well as painter, I am enjoying giving these deities tattoos of their sacred animals and objects. As we decorate ourselves and our homes with images of the objects and ideas we hold sacred, we are able to express to others without words the moments that have shaped us as individuals.

I first dabbled in art shortly after retiring from teaching in 1997. I started with a basic charcoal drawing class at the Art Guild in Northampton. I took classes in watercolor through the Easthampton Senior Center and Quadrangle in Springfield. I also studied surreal painting in transparent watercolors and experimented with landscapes. I tried my hand in color pencil drawing at the Holyoke Community Art Center.

During this training, I developed a strong attraction to painting and drawing animals. I’ve always had a special fondness for nature’s creatures. Inspirations come primarily from photographs, calendars, and magazines that I alter to fit my own idea of how to best represent the subjects.

I owe a debt of gratitude to the talented instructors who’ve inspired me and provided the tools and techniques for my newfound passion. I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I enjoyed creating them.
