Painting and travel are twin passions in my life. The discovery of new scenery draws me to travel and challenges me to capture its essence in a painting. Some people explore on foot. I use a paintbrush to learn a landscape, whether local or exotic.

Matt Johnson exhibits recent drawings and paintings this month at ECA/ECC Gallery.
My recent drawings and paintings present figure, landscape and still life as they are exhibited by a recollected realism. These little fictions give motivation to the painting process...which intentionally, in the end, owns the Art. The decisions made during the execution of the work are made because of the the way that matter is getting pushed around on canvas or by the way marks are scraping onto some paper. If a pictorial narrative gets bent or twisted along the way...all the better.
