Labor Day has come and gone and now fall's hectic schedule begins. The third season of the year also marks a transition for this newsletter. We are pleased to announce that Bronwen Hodgkinson will become the publisher of the Art Newsletter Experiment beginning next week.

We've been delighted to gather and disseminate the Pioneer Valley's art events and opportunities for the past year. But it's time for us to focus on work and to spend more time pursuing our passion for photography which has languished a bit while we produced the newsletter and the Art Walk. What begin as an ambitious labor of love by Mo Ringey, and nurtured by Tom and I for the past year now begins its third chapter in the capable hands of Bronwen. She's knowledgeable, enthusiastic, an art lover and perhaps has no idea what she's gotten herself into. :-) Be nice to her.

Art events, exhibitions and opportunities should be submitted via the new home for the newsletter at www.ValleyArtsNewsletter.com or via email at art@valleyartsnewsletter.com Be sure to include all of the details of your event information so your listing, and the newsletter, can continue to be a productive source of information for art lovers throughout the region. Your subscription to the newsletter will continue, uninterrupted.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve, and we wish Bronwen and the Valley's immense creative talents all the very best. Peace.
Gloria Kegeles is a photographer who paints with light. Using the reflective surfaces of chrome and paint on vintage vehicles, her photographs are abstractions of light, color and form. Kegeles cruises car and truck shows to find her preferred “canvas” -- restored automobiles of the chrome age.

The Williston Northampton School presents “Mixed Media Abstraction,” by Carl Caivano on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery September 2 - 30, 2008. An artist’s reception will be held in the gallery on September 14 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Carl Caivano creates abstract colorful wall reliefs referring to shapes found in both nature and culture. His self-described “three dimensional paintings” explore formal artistic elements such as space and form with the use of non-traditional materials. Although spontaneity is evident in his work, Caivano is precise, producing a controlled chaos, and has an unmistakable affinity to abstract expressionism and improvisational jazz music.

“What is hard to define but critical to the life of these works is the visceral, instinctual nature that informs them. When a work is successful, it sets off a series of responses that pure formalism does not. I arrive to the completion of the work by intuitive searching. I do not want to arrive at a specific result or a specific meaning but prefer to gather meaning as the work evolves,” says Caivano.

A visiting lecturer of design and drawing at Smith College since 1987, Cavaino has had his work shown in selected galleries and museums, including the DeCordova Museum and the Ward Nasse Gallery and Fusion Arts Museum in New York City. He earned his MFA from UMass in 1984.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School.

Each author will offer readings and discussions of their work this fall. The series kicks off with author Gregory Maguire on September 16, 2008, 7:00 p.m. in the Williston Theatre.

Gregory Maguire's latest novel, Son of a Witch, tells the story of Liir, the son of the Wicked Witch killed by Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Son of a Witch is the sequel to Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which has since been made into an award-winning Broadway musical. In addition to Son of a Witch and Wicked, Maguire has written two other novels for adults, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Mirror Mirror; and more than a dozen novels for children. After the publication of Wicked in 1995, John Updike praised the book in The New Yorker as "an amazing novel." The Boston Globe described Son of a Witch as "vintage Maguire, thoroughly entertaining even at its darkest. Oz is as complex and satisfying a fantastic world as ever, wonderfully described." Gregory Maguire received his Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Tufts University and is co-director of Children's Liter
ature New England, Incorporated, a non-profit educational charity that focuses attention on the significance of literature in the lives of children.

San Huxley presents Sometimes Art Can Be Useful (aka when I do laundry, I am a star), an exhibit at the Easthampton Laundromat at 66 Cottage Street, Easthampton, MA on September 1- 30, 6 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.

The exhibition includes a collection of color photographic portraits taken at the Lost Sock in Easthampton and the Easthampton Laundromat. The artist was initially fascinated with the repetitive industrial interior landscapes and retro color combinations of laundromats. Despite the visual interest, it was still not enough to initiate clothes cleaning. “Taking these portraits motivated me to do my laundry on a weekly basis. Becoming my own star in my daily chores was an instigator to tackle that pile of clothes,” says the pseudo-anonymous artist.

The exhibition serves as an intersection of two worlds: the less functional world of art and the very practical laundromat. A space that is used as a commonplace for mundane tasks is now transformed into a gallery space for viewers doing their laundry. No opening will accompany this exhibit. Viewing is recommended whenever the overflow of laundry is unbearable.

A resident of Amherst, Kruger is an award-winning fiber artist and nationally-recognized speaker. She has invented a unique blend of fiber and encaustic, creating a body of work that is both contemporary and archetypal. “I am drawn to indigenous art from West Africa and especially the Amazon Basin where feathers are frequently used in the creation of ceremonial clothing,” says Kruger. “I am inspired by the innate message that art making is both sensible and sacred.” Kruger’s work has been featured in galleries across the country. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York with a degree in textile and surface design. Kruger maintains a studio in the Arts & Industry Building in Florence.

Create Art Studio offers unique art classes designed as a collaborative art making experience between parent and child. Our Mommy and Me class is designed for ages 3-5 (accompanied by an adult) and our Little Hands class for ages 18 months - 3 years (accompanied by and adult). These classes are a wonderful way to let your little one explore the excitement, amazement and of course, messiness of art making in a child-friendly environment. Classes are offered weekday and weekend mornings. More classes may be available dependent upon demand. Class size is kept small (4 child/adult pairs) to maintain an environment of individual attention and class productivity. Classes run for 4 consecutive weeks - new classes are starting all the time! These courses will incorporate diverse exercise regimens in order to promote the development of musical skills, offset the effects of repetitive muscle use, and extend career longevity. Participants will review basic concepts in anatomy and physiology related to performance, analyze the biomechanical techniques used with your instrument (or voice) and focus on specific exercises so participants can begin a personal biomechanical regimen.
