I have been painting on a variety of materials in acrylic paint since I was twelve years old, including rocks and canvas. I like to mix organic images with surreal images to try to get my feelings composed into a single piece, including all of the colorful and dark aspects of life.
Unlike Northampton's Hill & Dale, Easthampton's 'Hill & Dale' is alive and well, full of life and nature with work by three local artists . Carol King's contribution to this exhibition are her intimate pastel portraits of birds.
Unlike Northampton's Hill & Dale, Easthampton's 'Hill & Dale' is alive and well. Featured in this exhibit is Ruth West, an internationally known artist, who was the first computer artist in residency at Monet's Giverny gardens. Ruth will be presenting her inventive new bathtub series in a rural landscape or as she fondly describes, 'Mary on the half shell.'
Another of the 'Hill & Dale' artists is Chris Nelson who is inspired by creatures great and small that inhabit the Pioneer Valley. Since retiring from UMass as a labor relations attorney, she focuses full time on painting and photographing. especially the sheep that graze in her meadow. She has been active on the Leverett Conservation Committee where I work to preserve the habitat of the animals I love'
Opel is a new band from the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. Since adding organ and saxophone to the band, Opel's new sound has been described as "reminiscent of 60's psychodelic rock with a touch of R&B flavor". A 13 track album, "Strange Encounters," is set to be released in the Fall of 2007.
Juergen Roth was born and raised near Cologne, Germany. In 1988, he moved to Berlin West and following the fall of the Berlin Wall and in 1989 he enjoyed exploring the reunited city and the lost natural environment surrounding it.
After a number of visits to New York City, Juergen had his own exhibition of New York photographs in Berlin.
Since 2001 he has been living in Brookline, Massachusetts with his wife Helen and daughter Nina. Juergen has been participated in many local events and shows. His work has been published in books and magazines. Juergen finds inspiration at the nearby Wildlife Sanctuary Hall's Pond, as well as, in the beautiful landscapes of New Englands' National Parks and Forests.
Juergen has always regarded nature as the ultimate inspiration.
Please drop into The Pirate's Den to enjoy his stunning landscape showcased within. Look for the Yellow Gate on Cottage Street!
In my earliest recollections I have always wanted to paint. I saw myself as a painter foremost to anything else. This sounds so clichè. I have read other artists statements and many say the same thing. As I reached a landmark birthday in 2005, I realized my aspirations are still the same as they were when I was young. My painting has lead me into many directions, and journeys, and it has enriched my life.
The challenge I find in my own landscape painting is learning to see and interpret my own feelings and profound appreciation for nature. I constantly struggle to transcend the material and go beyond the painted surface image.
It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.
Carien Schippers has been photographing professionally since 1976. She has an AAS degree from SUNY Cobleskill in Animal Husbandry and a two year certificate from the New England School of Photography. For many years she was primarily an event and farm photographer, more recently she has been developing an extensive stock archive of equine images for publication as well as a fine art print site at horsedrivephotos.com. As a lifetime student of the horse she excels in capturing the spirit and beauty of the equine and is in constant pursuit of finding fresh, unique and creative perspectives of her subject. She is a keen observer and able to capture the subtle nuances of horse and herd behavior, giving her a highly recognizable style of work that has been widely published in a variety of magazines, calendars, books and catalogs.

Intimate Immensities -- paintings by Marlene Rye.
Travel in your mind back to a time as a child when you were in the "wilderness": backyard, vacant lot, roadside, field, or forest. Remember how the world looked as you crawled through the grass, each individual blade becoming a towering tree, rocks transformed into mountains. Visualize looking through the brambles and thickets of your backyard and feeling the enormity of that space juxtaposed with the closeness of the surrounding branches. See a field, feel the openness of the air and the closeness of the warm ground beneath, expanding and contracting the space at the same time. These sensations are at the heart of my work.

'These pictures are inspired by the farming that takes place all around my home in Hatfield, MA and by the Back Beach of Provincetown, MA. It is my close relationship with these places that is most important to me, their physical attributes essential but secondary' Mark Stein

Born and raised in Central Minnesota, Aric Bieganek grew up infused
with the belief that music can both tell stories and inspire personal
and social change. His perspective and his songs -– from the
introspectively placid to the passionately outspoken -– all embody
this belief, just as they have since he was a little boy playing his
first plastic guitar. Although Aric has traveled as far east as Japan,
as far north as Iceland, and across the United States in his trusty
Ford, his connection to his roots is evident in all the poetry and
fervor of his songwriting.
Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function. These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce. These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as
evident in the surface of these prints. Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina.
Michael MacTavish is a Contemporary Impressionist painter with a love for bold color and energetic knife and brush strokes. Realism is the map into MacTavish's painting, a voyage of abstract delights and lively surface textures.
Michael paints enthusiastically from the heart, completing each work while the paint is still wet, a method known as "alla prima."
"I love to paint outside. The changing weather and light encourages a spontaneous and fresh approach to the work. Observing nature directly builds a deep understanding of the visual world."
"I also love to paint in the studio. Often I will develop a painting done outdoors into a larger work done in the studio. I'll scan paintings completed outdoors and photographs into my computer, make adjustments and paint from the monitor. I can change the values, colors and shapes to be more like how I remember them, or how I wish them to be."
"Doug's (Manhan Cafe) coffee has had a significant influence in the energy found in some of my paintings. If I didn't have a cup of his coffee in one hand, I would most likely paint with both hands."
Painting full time in New England (spring, summer & fall) and the Southwest (winter), Michael shares a home and studio in both areas with his wife, Denise. You can find print reproductions of some of MacTavish's paintings at the Manhan Cafe from November 1st to the 28th.
Silas Kopf has been making furniture since 1973. He is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in architecture. He was an apprentice to Wendell Castle for two years.
In 1988 he was the recipient of a Craftsman's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Subsequently he studied traditional marquetry technique at the Ecole Boulle in Paris.
His work is in museums and private collections around the world. Drop into his unique studio, a converted firehouse, to see the step-by-step process used to create these unique marquetry works.

These works represent the past three years of taking as many pictures as possible when the opportunities arose. As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc.
Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting.
Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much.
Eric Mauro paints contemporary landscapes, seascapes and interiors using some of the traditional techniques of the Dutch 'Old Masters'.

'I reflect with my art the colors of a universe in constant motion'
Viviana Puello grew up on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and studied amongst the bohemian community of her small seaside village. When the political situation became intolerable, she immigrated to New York City, where she could paint, uninhibited from the social and political stigmas of traditional society. Puello's large abstract oil paintings are full of life with vibrant colors influenced by her passionate Latin background.
Viviana Puello states, "I'm living my dream and it is real. Those who saw me growing up and know my passion for art now see me with different eyes. I leave a piece of my soul in every painting. A thirsty soul always looking for answers. A dreamer who wants to change the world."
Puello has been actively exhibiting in New York City, Quebec and Saratoga Springs and was a blue ribbon recipient at the 2006 Saratoga Art's Center.
Marjorie Tauer is a local Easthampton artist. She paints with the Easthampton Art Guild and with the Deerfield Valley Painting group. She teaches watercolor at the Easthampton Lathrop Community. She also manages the gallery at the Lathrop Community with an art committee. Her paintings have hung in the Eluise Gallery, Arts and Flowers, and the Goodlander Gallery and in many homes in the valley.
In my Quantiference work, I use an emotion that I cannot understand or handle, and using a visual language of pseudo-math and symbols, create something beautiful that can perhaps give me insight into the original feeling. I do not expect people to look at my work and understand what I am feeling. I rely on my artistic skills to create something that is visually appealing and compelling to the point where understanding the meaning is secondary. The art becomes an independent object of the emotions behind it.
My pleasure in creating these pieces comes from working with that tension between maintaining the imagery and creating a work that is pleasing or exciting to anyone who sees it.
Cara Taylor has been designing and crocheting handbags out of recycled plastic for several years now. Friends and family (and strangers) from all over the country collect and send plastic bags which she then cuts up and 'loops' into yarn. A common material, harmful to the environment in countless ways, is transformed (or trash-formed) into an object that is fashionable and durable for everyday use. Each bag is one-of-a-kind.
I am an abstract artist from Ludlow, Ma working in acrylics and pen and ink. I Love to experiment with color and texture, and the goal of my work is to challenge the mind and stimulate the eye. I was recently accepted as an alternate in the painting category for the Paradise City Arts Festival in May 2008.

Horse paintings that flow with color and life; inspire energy, power, illustrate beauty, and the elegance of horses are evident in Barbara's art. Mixing painting with a love for horses, Barbara reveals the special personality and spirit of each individual horse. Growing up around horses she developed a strong sense of the anatomy, personality, and spirit of the horse. Barbara has an illustration degree from The Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, Colorado, and a graphic design degree from Sage College in Albany, New York. Currently, Barbara's art can be seen on the cover of Washington Thoroughbred 2007 Summer Yearling Edition magazine and at Union Gables in Saratoga, New York. Galleries that have shown her art include Departure Gallery at the Albany International Airport, Gallery at the Kentucky Derby, Horsing Around in West Sand Lake, New York, and Artwell Gallery in Torrington, Connecticut. Barbara also donates her equine art to support local horse re
scues.
