From August 9 to September 9. Artist's Reception, Saturday, August 9, from 5 - 8 p.m. during the monthly second Saturday Art Walk.
David's recent work involves reclaiming disposable objects in mass to create two and three dimensional works. Pieces can involve tea bags, matchbook strikes, plastic cutlery, etc. These items are generally disregarded and ignored by the everyday person. Through the gathering of the discards of contemporary culture, he asks the viewer to reconsider the function and value of these objects. He also reassigns their value by re-contextualizing them by creating a piece of art from them. Besides utilizing the formal issues that interest him, based in the Minimalist school, he also is making a commentary on the disposable nature of contemporary culture. |

August 11 -15, morning walks designed by Science and Somatic investigator: Melinda Buckwalter at 10:30 a.m.("Birds" walk on Thursday starts at 8:30 a.m.) The schedule of participating scientists and somatic specialists to follow.
These walks are a part of the SEEDS (Somatic Experiments in Earth, Dance + Science) Festival. There will be a short, optional movement warm-up before and after each walk, led by somatic specialists. SEEDS participants and willing guests will be given a performative assignment exploring the physical components of thought.

Tuesday: Geology with Joe Kopera, MA State Geologist and Clyde Forth.

If a story is selected for airing it will also be available in print and podcast form on the show's website at http://www.lit1033.com. Each show consists of one or two stories with a total word count of 6,000-9,000 words.
If you would like to submit a story for consideration, email it to lit103.3@comcast.net. DO NOT SEND IT AS AN ATTACHMENT, rather,include it in the body of your email, together with any biographical or other relevant information you'd like read before/after the broadcast.
Because the reading is over the public airwaves FCC guidelines apply. Like Norman Mailer in The Naked and the Dead, the reader can fug around with words to a certain extent, but if the overall sexual content is too explicit it won't work. The Brick House Community Resource Center at 24 Third Street, Turners Falls will again be hosting a Silent Art Auction during the Arts & Leaves Turners Falls Open Studio and Downtown Walking Tour, on October 4th and 5th, 2008, from 10:00 to 5:00. The non-profit organization is seeking donations of quality handmade art and craft work, in a wide variety of mediums, sizes, and price ranges.
All donated items will be displayed through The Brick House website during the month prior to the event, with information identifying the artist and/or business, details of the piece, retail price, and starting bid. Artists will also receive donor paperwork that can be used for tax purposes.
The auction, which will take place over the two-day Arts & Leaves event, will begin with a preview on the evening of October 3rd, where initials bids will be welcomed. The weekend will continue with the items on display at The Brick House, and bidding will close at 5:00 on Sunday, October 5th.
The Brick House Community Resource Center is a non-profit organization that supports the well being of individuals, families, and communities in Montague and Gill, through collaboration on economic development, youth development, leadership development, and education. Do you love to sing a cappella chamber choral music? If you do and you have a good blending voice and can sight-read music, the Pioneer Valley Cappella (PVC) could be the group for you!
We have an exciting new director this year, Dr. Carolina Flores, so now is an excellent time to join! This season we’ll explore Hungarian, Spanish and American a cappella repertoire from the Renaissance to the 21st century. We prepare two concert programs per year.
Dr. Flores will audition all voice parts. Auditions are painless: a few vocal exercises and a bit of sight-reading to assess your vocal technique and musical skill.

Biomechanics for Musicians--new at NCMC!
These courses will incorporate diverse exercise regimens in order to promote the development of musical skills, offset the effects of repetitive muscle use, and extend career longevity. Participants will review basic concepts in anatomy and physiology related to performance, analyze the biomechanical techniques used with your instrument (or voice) and focus on specific exercises so participants can begin a personal biomechanical regimen.
This course is offered in 2 levels, to be taken consecutively.
Instructor Dr. John Wallman is a Doctor of Chiropractic specializing in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition. He is also an award-winning percussionist and pianist. Dr. Wallman has over 25 years of experience with the health and performance of musicians, athletes, body builders and astronauts.

During this one-day workshop, jazz saxophonist Sarah Manning will help musicians go "from classroom to career artist" by forming and selling a marketable musical identity.
Effectively promoting your music--in an era when industry support for artist development has fallen by the wayside--is as important to your career as mastering your instrument. As an emerging artist, Sarah Manning has produced two albums as a composer and bandleader and headlined top venues in California and New York City.
Profiled in the June 2007 "Players" section of Down Beat magazine as well as in newspapers, online media and radio interviews, Manning's creative and savvy approach to self-promotion was a critical factor in her indie success.

The Northampton Community Children's Choir will be holding AUDITIONS for its 08-09 season on Sunday, September 7, at 2:00PM. If your child is in grade 3-8 (with an unchanged voice) and loves to sing, this is the perfect opportunity to get him or her started on the path to solid vocal technique and an appreciation of choral singing!
The Children's Choir performs a wide variety of vocal literature while developing critical sightsinging and vocal skills. This group's past performances have included the opening of the Eric Carle Museum and Commonwealth Opera's productions of Brundibar and La Boheme.
