Gaddier Rosario’s work is deeply rooted in his Puerto Rican heritage. His paintings and works on paper speak to the human condition through a diverse language of form, color, and texture. Rosario’s works evoke the rich context of his hybrid Latin/Caribbean heritage and simultaneously convey aspects shared cross-culturally. Figurative elements in his works shift between abstraction and representational imagery, constructing characters as varied and colorful as those that inhabit his memories and those of his home here in New England.
Composed of a collection of select paintings, editioned prints, and works on paper, the exhibition explores the artist’s genuine fondness for exploring color and its relationship to the viewer’s emotional response.

"My work is concerned with the human condition: identity, magic, spirituality, desire, loss, ennui, virtue, innocence, humor, etc. I try to address these in ways that are both elemental and sophisticated.
My portraits aim to be more than just likenesses of people; they are expressions of universal and sometimes ineffable emotions. Likewise, my landscapes intend to symbolize feelings, as much as the literal time-spaces that inspire them. Bees might symbolize of ways of “bee-ing.” Flowers just ARE."

Gaddier Rosario
My art is autonomous but not autistic; it is polluted through life, rendered sensible to the figures and symbols of the era and the signs of time: the raw matter that is transfigured by art as an offering beyond its immediacy. Always searching to freely capture the sensibility that surrounds’ me and, as its consequence, express my own truth.
Carolyn Kibe
Carolyn Kibe's representational works in oil, pastels and clay relief depict people, landscapes and florals. Subjects range from a grandmother and a coal miner, to Pioneer Valley scenes, waterscapes, and florals from the garden.

From 11am to 7pm, Ritz will host a brief show, "Breath of Summer," to display dozens of canvases in her open and airy New England barn studio and also under a unique tent structure across her large backyard. Her canvases resonate with the full sensations of the colors and shapes from nature that surrounds her wherever she happens to be at the time, whether in the South American climate of Colombia or that of the four seasons in her own backyard in South Amherst. Over the years she has been able to express those visceral feelings into a study and celebration of color, the element which for her defines the emerging form. Ritz has traveled widely as at teacher, lecturer and artist-in-residence. Her work is included in many private collections. She was a member of the painting faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence and received a grant from the US information Agency to teach and exhibit h
er work at the Institute de Belles Artes, Medellin, Colombia. Ritz has received numerous invitations to present lectures at various institutions, among them the American University, Washington DC; and the New York Studio School, New York. Ritz's work has been included in one-person and group exhibitions internationally including the Bowery Gallery, New York; the Hillyer Gallery at Smith College; and the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris.

Class Name: The "Extreme Tones" Print Class Time: 10:00 AM Start Date: Monday July 28th, 2008 End Date: Thursday July 31st, 2008 Fee: $450 Organization: Zea Mays Printmaking Location Name: Zea Mays Printmaking Address: 221 Pine St. Studio #320 City, ST: Florence, MA Website:www.zeamaysprintmaking.com
This workshop is a great way to learn all the basics and nuances of "non-toxic" etching. Through the use of many acrylic resist methods participants will become familiar with a variety of contemporary etching techniques. This workshop will feature the multi-plate method of building a full range of values up to an extreme black using etching processes. Participants will begin with a series of soft ground etches on copper to start developing an image. The image will then be transferred to a second plate and both plates will be treated with aquatint. After reworking each plate with burnishing and scraping the first 'linear' plate will continue to be developed with line and soft ground, while the second 'tonal' plate will receive more aquatint. Both plates will be printed in black and add up to a rich full black and a full range of grays.

Learn Stone Carving From The Ground Up
Class Name: Old-School Stonecarving Class Time: 5:00 PM Start Date: Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 End Date: Tuesday August 26th, 2008 Fee: $300 Organization: New England Stoneworks Location Name: Williams' Garage Carving Studio Address: 147 2nd Street City, ST: Turners Falls, MA Website:www.ohmysoul.org/master/main/index.html
This is a great opportunity to learn stonecarving techniques from the valley's own master carver, Tim de Christopher. Tim was a carver and architect at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC, and is now founding a new workshop for training carvers to work on the development of his own masterwork, The Cathedral Project, in Turners Falls.
Classes will be taught in an apprenticeship fashion, on a flexible, ongoing basis. After the initial class, students can continue indefinitely, at a modest price, as members of the fully equipped caving studio.
Each student/apprentice will learn the basic skills of direct carving in Indiana Limestone. This will include training in conceptualizing and visualizing three-dimensional form, an introduction to materials and methods, basic skills in hand and power tools, roughing out, refining, and finishing the work. There will also be opportunity to learn how to safely handle the stone and execute installations, which will include the use of the forklift and specialized lifting equipment.
All tools and materials are provided in the course fee.
