Staycation
Staycation. It's the hottest, new buzzword of the summer. It's supposed to mean that that one chooses to "Stay" at home for "Vacation" to enjoy all its comforts. Doesn't that sound better than those %&*$!!!-damn gas prices have made it too expensive to fill up my tank? Yeah, I didn't think so either.

But, if you're "staycating," take heart; there are some fun things to do this week.

Second Chance to See the OZ Exhibit!!!

'There's No Place Like Home!' This theme, which has resonated in Terry Rooney's work for years, has finally led her down the yellow brick road to OZ. As she began the first several pieces for the Oz body of work, she noticed that she kept painting pictures of the Oz characters from the knees down. She realized that she was channeling Toto and painting from his perspective! The general public is invited to bring their 'ruby slippers' (any type of red shoe will do!) to the reception, and help celebrate the OZ story by participating in an installation piece during the Art Walk Easthampton. The artist has also invites the general public to come as their favorite character. This exhibition will also feature the collection of OZ memorabilia from Dee Michel of Northampton. "My work is an exploration of the relationship between food and identity. My aim is to question our automatic responses and unrealized prejudices towards a certain group of foods I call the "American Diet". I hope my work playfully challenges the viewer with bizarre juxtapositions calling attention to the absurdity of the unconscious, predisposed "meanings" and value systems we project onto the things that we eat. I hope that these pieces will one day serve as a document of the food and "food products" of the our time and how we relate to them." My work is a synthesis of the values of Pop Art and Dada in the tradition of by Eduardo Paolozzi and (to a lesser extent) R.B. Kitaj.

A Nation Hooked On Prescription Drugs - Talking With Melody Petersen About Our Daily Meds
Event: Writers Voice with Francesca Rheannon on Radio

Location Name: 93.3FM WXOJ FM Valley Free Radio
City, ST: Florence, MA
Website: www.writersvoice.net
Host Francesca Rheannon talks with reporter and author Melody Petersen about OUR DAILY MEDS. It’s about how the pharmaceutical industry has put marketing above medicine and corrupted our health care system in the process.

Every five minutes, another American dies from taking their prescription medicine –as prescribed. Kids as young as preschoolers are taking powerful prescription drugs, like Ritalin and antipsychotics, whose safety has never been tested in children. And doctors are on the take, feted at junkets costing thousands of dollars, paid tens of thousands to sign their names to articles written by drug company marketers, and pressured to give the newest, least tested drugs to their patients instead of cheaper, safer and effective older ones. They’ve also created new illnesses out of common human conditions–like shyness or heartburn–so they can push more drugs into the marketplace. Melody Petersen’s subtitle to OUR DAILY MEDS says it all: How the Pharmaceutical Companies Transformed Themselves into Slick Marketing Machines and Hooked the Nation on Prescription D rugs.

We also play a clip from an archived interview with Maxine Kumin. We talk to her about her poem “Nurture”.

City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Art Walk Easthampton has an open call for visual, music and performance artists who would like to showcase their talents during the monthly Art Walk. Each of the venues that participate in the Walk independently select the artist or performer to feature. Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.

You can submit an "Artist Proposal" online by visiting www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and following the "Call for Artists" link at the bottom of the page. Once you have subscribed to the newsletter and confirmed your subscription, you can submit your proposal.

The process is a 3-page form with a series of questions: types of venues interested in, available dates, number of pieces proposed or length of performance, etc. Your answers form the proposal which is then made available to each of the venues. This workshop is a great way to learn all the basics and nuances of "non-toxic" etching. Through the use of many acrylic resist methods participants will become familiar with a variety of contemporary etching techniques. This workshop will feature the multi-plate method of building a full range of values up to an extreme black using etching processes. Participants will begin with a series of soft ground etches on copper to start developing an image. The image will then be transferred to a second plate and both plates will be treated with aquatint. After reworking each plate with burnishing and scraping the first 'linear' plate will continue to be developed with line and soft ground, while the second 'tonal' plate will receive more aquatint. Both plates will be printed in black and add up to a rich full black and a full range of grays.

This is a great opportunity to learn stonecarving techniques from the valley's own master carver, Tim de Christopher. Tim was a carver and architect at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC, and is now founding a new workshop for training carvers to work on the development of his own masterwork, The Cathedral Project, in Turners Falls.

Classes will be taught in an apprenticeship fashion, on a flexible, ongoing basis. After the initial class, students can continue indefinitely, at a modest price, as members of the fully equipped caving studio.

Each student/apprentice will learn the basic skills of direct carving in Indiana Limestone. This will include training in conceptualizing and visualizing three-dimensional form, an introduction to materials and methods, basic skills in hand and power tools, roughing out, refining, and finishing the work. There will also be opportunity to learn how to safely handle the stone and execute installations, which will include the use of the forklift and specialized lifting equipment.

All tools and materials are provided in the course fee.
