Frannie Lindsey, Her Poetry And The Grace With Which To Heal Wounds Of The Past
Event: Writers Voice with Francesca Rheannon on Radio

Reception: Thursday June 19th, 2008 @ 8:00 AM
End Date: Thursday June 19th, 2008
Location Name: 93.3FM WXOJ FM Valley Free Radio
City, ST: Florence, MA
Website: www.writersvoice.net
Frannie Lindsey won the 2006 Perugia Press Award for her second poetry volume, LAMB. It was also the runner-up for the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. Lindsey’s poems take up the themes of trauma and healing. Ellen Bass, author of The Courage to Heal, writes:

“Frannie Lindsay’s poems about abuse, trauma, and healing transcend their subjects. They are, instead, hymns of praise for the love we are able to wrest from our flawed lives. The delicacy of Lamb is like that of a ballet dancer — underlaid with great strength.”

Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Lindsey about her work and how poetry can bring a measure of grace to knit up the wounds of the past.

Indian Orchard Exhibits/Events
Gallery 137 Presents Retrospective: Berenice Michelow
Retrospective Artist: Berenice Michelow
Event: Retrospective
Start Date: Saturday May 31st, 2008
End Date: Thursday July 3rd, 2008
Location Name: Gallery 137
Address: 137 Main Street
City, ST: Indian Orchard, MA
Website: www.gallery137.org/current_exhibits.html
Berenice Michelow is an accomplished artist renowned for her dramatic works and sensitive portrayals. Michelow's emigration to the United States from her native South Africa in 2004 marked the beginning of the third phase in her career. The first featured her "protest" paintings, symbolic representations of Apartheid's injustice. Works of the second phase were responses to the new South Africa's evolving democracy. Her current phase features impressions of her adopted homeland and its "overwhelming patriotism."

Whether working on canvas or paper, with oils or pastels, in charcoal or 3D UV, Michelow's technical mastery is self-evident, often evincing itself in an unfolding of photographic realism played out in the midst of otherworldly abstraction. Michelow has enjoyed decades of commercial success. In 1979 she represented South Africa at the International Biennale in Valparaiso, Chile. To date she has had 27 private shows worldwide, and her work is held in such high-profile collections as that of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City.

Southampton Exhibits/Events
Extraordinary Photo Exhibit By Accomplished Valley Photographer...
California Dreamin Photo Exhibit Artist: Donald David
Event: California Dreamin Photo Exhibit
Start Date: Sunday June 1st, 2008
End Date: Sunday June 29th, 2008
Location Name: Robert Floyd Photo Gallery and Learning Center
Address: 2 East Street @ College Highway (Rt. 10)
City, ST: Southampton, MA
Website: www.robertfloydphoto.com
Fee: FREE. Resfreshments served.
The Gallery hosts a collection of top shelf nature color photographs created mostly in California. Far from the stereotypical California scenes, these brilliant photos capture and convey strong colors and breathtaking vistas, as well, as close-ups and wildlife images. The photographer, Don David, continues to separate himself from most new England photographers with new work, challenging himself to capture what he sees and feels. "California Dreamin" is a rare must see exhibit. The images are refreshingly different and unique.

As a former Polymer Scientist/Engineer, Don continued his interest in photography. Since he had the opportunity to travel widely, he created substantial travel and landscape photography but presently, Don's main interest is nature and wildlife photography.

Whether his subjects are nature, landscape, or wildlife, Mr. David attempts to portray them as faithfully as he sees the original image, with only the necessary modifications to bring out the natural beauty of the image. All wildlife is photographed in its natural habitat with no artificial setups or lighting. Don attempts to present images that may not ordinarily be observed so that the viewer can discover something new for herself/himself and thus appreciate a unique moment of the beauty in the world around us. Don David's photographs have been recognized with a number of awards.

The Gallery continues to ship any image(s) you purchase, F-R-E-E, to any town /city in the continental USA!

Art Walk Easthampton has an open call for visual, music and performance artists who would like to showcase their talents during the monthly Art Walk. Each of the venues that participate in the Walk independently select the artist or performer to feature. Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.

You can submit an "Artist Proposal" online by visiting www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and following the "Call for Artists" link at the bottom of the page. Once you have subscribed to the newsletter and confirmed your subscription, you can submit your proposal.

The process is a 3-page form with a series of questions: types of venues interested in, available dates, number of pieces proposed or length of performance, etc. Your answers form the proposal which is then made available to each of the venues. The venues make the selections. Your proposal is available to them for up to one year.

Show Name: SculptFest08
Submission Due Date: Monday July 7th, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.carvingstudio.org
City, ST: West Rutland, VT
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.

The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly
abundant in the area with quarries opening into the earth, equipment remnants and the modified landscape itself. SculptFest08 offers the opportunity for artists to respond to and interpret the post-industrial environment.

Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.

Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.

Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.

Beginning with an introduction to fundamental color theory, we will explore the monoprinting techniques that that do not require a press: transfer drawing, offset rolling and easy methods for registering plates. We are interested in the quality of the printed line that you will be able to create in your home without a press. We have a beautiful studio that will allow for working on the press too- with stencils, subtractive techniques, and layering color with waterbased printing inks. These three days will be guided by plenty of demonstrations and lots of free time to develop and move your images into beautiful related series or prints. This could serve as an introduction to printmaking, or as a way to discover ways to print away from the press, or as a vacation from thought to connect with the spontaneous nature of monoprinting.

This workshop is a great way to learn all the basics and nuances of "non-toxic" etching. Through the use of many acrylic resist methods participants will become familiar with a variety of contemporary etching techniques. This workshop will feature the multi-plate method of building a full range of values up to an extreme black using etching processes. Participants will begin with a series of soft ground etches on copper to start developing an image. The image will then be transferred to a second plate and both plates will be treated with aquatint. After reworking each plate with burnishing and scraping the first 'linear' plate will continue to be developed with line and soft ground, while the second 'tonal' plate will receive more aquatint. Both plates will be printed in black and add up to a rich full black and a full range of grays.
