Slate Roof poets Paula Sayword and Janet MacFadyen, along with guest poet Barbara Paparazzo, read from their work.

Slate Roof Press is member-run and committed to publishing Pioneer Valley poets. Designed by the poets themselves, Slate Roof chapbooks feature letterpress covers, special papers, and hand-sewn bindings. There will be time to inquire about membership, and to learn about small press publishing and chapbook creation.

Paula Sayword’s first collection, Stories from the Sky, is forthcoming from Slate Roof in 2009. A Leyden resident with deep connections to the natural world, Paula writes about the grief and joy of rural life, and the intimate moments of memory and meaning. A 2006 Poet Seat Poetry Contest finalist, she has been published in Sanctuary. Shutesbury resident Janet MacFadyen will read from A Newfoundland Journal, a book-length poem about the human and natural landscape of this Canadian island. Her poems have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Poetry, New England Watershed, and Osiris. From Conway, we welcome Barbara Paparazzo. Barbara received an MFA from New England College in 2005, and her work has appeared in national journals such as The Atlanta Review, Cincinnati Review, Runes, and Rattle.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served, and Slate Roof Press books will be on display for sale. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Conway Local Cultural Council.

'There's No Place Like Home!' This theme, which has resonated in Terry Rooney's work for years, has finally led her down the yellow brick road
to OZ.

As she began the first several pieces for the Oz body of work, she noticed that she kept painting pictures of the Oz characters from the knees down. She realized that she was channeling Toto and painting from his perspective!

The general public is invited to bring their 'ruby slippers' (any type of red shoe will do!) to the reception, and help celebrate the OZ story by participating in an installation piece during the Art Walk Easthampton. The artist has also invites the general public to come as their favorite character. This exhibition will also feature the collection of OZ memorabilia from Dee Michel of Northampton.

Follow the red footprints to Nashawannuck Gallery to the opening of OZ: from Toto's point of view.

Location Name: 93.3FM WXOJ FM Valley Free Radio

Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Ta-Nehisi Coates about his memoir, THE BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE. Coates grew up with his father, mother, siblings and half-siblings in an African American neighborhood in northwest Baltimore during the 1980’s. He was a kid when the crack epidemic hit Baltimore and sucked the life out of what had once been a thriving, intact, community. But then it changed and young black boys like Coates were faced with challenges that sent many of them over the cliff.
Ta-Nehisi Coates was luckier—he had a father who cared passionately about saving his boys, Ta-Nehisi and his older brother Bill, who were coming of age in the middle of the chaos.

Extraordinary Photo Exhibit By Accomplished Valley Photographer...
California Dreamin Artist: Donald David
Event: California Dreamin
Start Date: Sunday June 1st, 2008
End Date: Sunday June 29th, 2008
Location Name: Robert Floyd Photo Gallery and Learning Center
Address: 2 East Street @ College Highway (Rt. 10)
City, ST: Southampton, MA
Website: www.robertfloydphoto.com
Fee: FREE. Resfreshments served.
The Gallery hosts a collection of top shelf nature color photographs created mostly in California. Far from the stereotypical California scenes, these brilliant photos capture and convey strong colors and breathtaking vistas, as well, as close-ups and wildlife images. The photographer, Don David, continues to separate himself from most new England photographers with new work, challenging himself to capture what he sees and feels. "California Dreamin" is a rare must see exhibit. The images are refreshingly different and unique.

As a former Polymer Scientist/Engineer, Don continued his interest in photography. Since he had the opportunity to travel widely, he created substantial travel and landscape photography but presently, Don's main interest is nature and wildlife photography.

Whether his subjects are nature, landscape, or wildlife, Mr. David attempts to portray them as faithfully as he sees the original image, with only the necessary modifications to bring out the natural beauty of the image. All wildlife is photographed in its natural habitat with no artificial setups or lighting. Don attempts to present images that may not ordinarily be observed so that the viewer can discover something new for herself/himself and thus appreciate a unique moment of the beauty in the world around us. Don David's photographs have been recognized with a number of awards.

The Gallery continues to ship any image(s) you purchase, F-R-E-E, to any town /city in the continental USA!

Art Walk Easthampton has an open call for visual, music and performance artists who would like to showcase their talents during the monthly Art Walk. At 1:00 PM every Tuesday, on WXOJ LP, 103.3 (Valley Free Radio), Lit103.3 airs the reading of one or two short stories. If a story is selected for airing it will also be available in print and podcast form on the show's website at http://www.lit1033.com. Each show consists of one or two stories with a total word count of 6,000-9,000 words.

If you would like to submit a story for consideration, email it to lit103.3@comcast.net. DO NOT SEND IT AS AN ATTACHMENT, rather, include it in the body of your email, together with any biographical or other relevant information you'd like read before/after the broadcast.

Because the reading is over the public airwaves FCC guidelines apply. Like Norman Mailer in The Naked and the Dead, the reader can fug around with words to a certain extent, but if the overall sexual content is too explicit it won't work. Call For Sculptors -- Human Interventions And The Industrial Landscape
SculptFest08 Sponsoring Group Name: The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center
Show Name: SculptFest08
Submission Due Date: Monday July 7th, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.carvingstudio.org
City, ST: West Rutland, VT
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.

The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly
abundant in the area with quarries opening into the earth, equipment remnants and the modified landscape itself. SculptFest08 offers the opportunity for artists to respond to and interpret the post-industrial environment.

Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.

Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.

Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.

Address submissions to “SculptFest08,” the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, P.O. Box 495, West Rutland, VT 05777.
