| Party On |
| |
By this time on Wednesday the race for the Democratic presidential nomination will be over. Or not.
It's been a long time since the Party has had two fully capable candidates. It's been....well, never....since there's been so much pent up enthusiasm. The primary season has lasted an exhausting 14 months and brought out passionate, roaring crowds. The desire for new leadership is a palpable demonstration of a patriotism that runs deep and wide. Now is the time for the currents to converge. Together we can get so much more done.
Party on.

The Spirit of Landscape and Myth is a two-person exhibition by Constance Hamilton and Janet Walerstein Winston, Gallery A3's newest members.
Constance Hamilton:
Engaging with the spirit and poetic imagery of the myth Demeter and Persephone, these paintings and drawings reflect my probing and exploring the grand themes of power, loss, despair, insight and transformation, which the gods and goddesses lived out on their mythical world stage and which continue to guide and move us in our lives today.
Janet Walerstein Winston:
My paintings are a continual exploration of the disputed lands of Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. These lands all include similar stark mountain ranges of pale blues and lavenders as seen from a distance. The land is dry, dusty, and rocky in tones of tans, golds and rose except where it has been irrigated to produce crops and stands of Cyprus trees. The intense sunlight creates a scorched whiteness and dark shadows. I have tried to capture the spirit of these vistas, colors and drama and translate them into an interpretation of my own. The colors I use come from my memories of the climate and topography of the area. Details become compressed into textures and gestural marks but vistas are kept open. I have used both the media of oil on canvas and pigment and wax on plaster, the plaster creating an organic texture of its own, by way of expressing my long connection to this part of the world. |

VOYAGES - A show of clay reliefs, oilstick studies and ink drawings by Ben Westbrock will be featured in the Jones Library, Burnett Gallery, in Amherst from June 2 to June 29. There will be an opening for the show from 5-8 P.M. on Thursday, June 5, during the monthly Art Walk in Amherst. The show will be open during regular library hours through June.
Mr. Westbrock sees the show as a "voyage," exploring line and color, both figurative and abstract, in a variety of media. He feels that every show should be a journey to an unknown land full of surprises and new experience. The show explores abstract form in clay reliefs with raku, acrylic and enamel spray surfaces; with pointillist black-and-white drawings set in wood frames; and with oilstick color landscapes on paper. He senses that the journey is ever-expanding, moving further and further into the unknown in each medium.
Shown here: "Cactus"(2007), a raku-fired, white clay relief. Approx. 18-20" in dimension. |

'There's No Place Like Home!' This theme, which has resonated in Terry Rooney's work for years, has finally led her down the yellow brick road
to OZ.
As she began the first several pieces for the Oz body of work, she noticed that she kept painting pictures of the Oz characters from the knees down. She realized that she was channeling Toto and painting from his perspective!
The general public is invited to bring their 'ruby slippers' (any type of red shoe will do!) to the reception, and help celebrate the OZ story by participating in an installation piece during the Art Walk Easthampton. The artist has also invites the general public to come as their favorite character. This exhibition will also feature the collection of OZ memorabilia from Dee Michel of Northampton.
Follow the red footprints to Nashawannuck Gallery to the opening of OZ: from Toto's point of view. |

Creations can be simple geometric patterns, trompe l'oeil fountains or statuary, or simple blocks of color. Embrace your inner child and your inner artist, and make town hall worthy of an Italian palace.
The Easthampton Cultural Council will provide the chalk, but we need everyone's help to create a mosaic on the sidewalk of Old Town Hall!

Steven Daiber and Jacqueline Hayden have traveled to Cuba annually since the spring of 2000. During the academic year of 2003-04 they lived in Havana, Cuba for 10 months, where Steven had the opportunity to work in 5 different print shops with a variety of Cuban artists. Two of these are state run print shops that provide equipment, supplies, and opportunities for Cuban artists and foreigners to work. Another two shops are unofficially run, providing the same services and more. The fifth, a private shop recognized by the government, is amazingly equipped with an abundance of inks, paper, and presses. This is Cuba, the state and private enterprise coexisting, waiting for change.
In Havana, living with a Cuban family, Steven and Jacqueline worked with Cubans caught in the political bind between Cuba and the United States, using humor and creative ingenuity to survive and prosper. The prints in this exhibition were made by Cuban artists of all ages, from young college graduates to seasoned printmakers. The artists exhibited in Grabados de la Habana look at contemporary life in Cuba: masculinity and power, the daily water supply, old cars and hope.
Steven Daiber will give a talk at the opening reception about his experiences working and living with the Cuban people and the prints that developed out of their print shops. |

The Gallery hosts a collection of top shelf nature color photographs created mostly in California. Far from the stereotypical California scenes, these brilliant photos capture and convey strong colors and breathtaking vistas, as well, as close-ups and wildlife images. The photographer, Don David, continues to separate himself from most new England photographers with new work, challenging himself to capture what he sees and feels. "California Dreamin" is a rare must see exhibit. The images are refreshingly different and unique.
As a former Polymer Scientist/Engineer, Don continued his interest in photography. Since he had the opportunity to travel widely, he created substantial travel and landscape photography but presently, Don's main interest is nature and wildlife photography.
Whether his subjects are nature, landscape, or wildlife, Mr. David attempts to portray them as faithfully as he sees the original image, with only the necessary modifications to bring out the natural beauty of the image. All wildlife is photographed in its natural habitat with no artificial setups or lighting. Don attempts to present images that may not ordinarily be observed so that the viewer can discover something new for herself/himself and thus appreciate a unique moment of the beauty in the world around us. Don David's photographs have been recognized with a number of awards.
The Gallery continues to ship any image(s) you purchase, F-R-E-E, to any town /city in the continental USA! |

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.
The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly
abundant in the area with quarries opening into the earth, equipment remnants and the modified landscape itself. SculptFest08 offers the opportunity for artists to respond to and interpret the post-industrial environment.
Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.
Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.
Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.
Address submissions to “SculptFest08,” the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, P.O. Box 495, West Rutland, VT 05777. |

More advanced students will explore improvisation and how scales relate to guitar solos. You'll also learn chord development to gain a greater understanding of harmony and theory.
Karl Rausch has played guitar for more than 40 years. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Karl has 10+ years teaching experience. He is a patient and non-judgemental musical coach. An active performer, Karl has multiple recordings as soloist, leader and side man.
