The Doug Hewitt Group performs uniquely original rock & jazz drawing from many years of song writing plus covers ranging from John Coltrane to the Beatles. Last year Doug released "Picasso Tomato" his 6th album of all original music which is the groups main source of material. The band is Doug Hewitt on guitar and vocals, John Crankshaw on drums, Mitch Pine on piano, Robby Roiter on bass, Amy Bateman on violin, plus they welcome their newest member Dani Lorenzo on vocals. The Doug Hewitt Group performs three types of shows: jazz, rock and originals which fuse those genres.

Mat Herschler has been song writing since he was a kid. In his vagabond younger years he was introduced to and often performed with regional acts around the country and in Europe. Most recent credits include the title track of John Cruz' new album "One of these Days." Much experience as a side man, Mat now emerges as a solo performer. His unique piano stylings steeped in gospel, blues and R and B well support a richly expressive voice. His lyrics take on the tough subjects of the day. Drugs, madness, alienation, injustice and Love, war and peace.

Terry Rousso and Glen Stegner are a violin and piano duo who have been playing jazz and other improvisational styles together for many years. Terry has extensive classical training while Glen studied jazz with Kenny Baron. In addition to piano Glen often utilizes synthesizers to expand their music beyond the organic into the stratospheric.

The Spirit Of Landscape And Myth Constance Hamilton & Janet Walerstein Winston At Gallery A3

The Spirit of Landscape and Myth is a two-person exhibition by Constance Hamilton and Janet Walerstein Winston, Gallery A3's newest members.

Constance Hamilton:
Engaging with the spirit and poetic imagery of the myth Demeter and Persephone, these paintings and drawings reflect my probing and exploring the grand themes of power, loss, despair, insight and transformation, which the gods and goddesses lived out on their mythical world stage and which continue to guide and move us in our lives today.

Janet Walerstein Winston:
My paintings are a continual exploration of the disputed lands of Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. These lands all include similar stark mountain ranges of pale blues and lavenders as seen from a distance. The land is dry, dusty, and rocky in tones of tans, golds and rose except where it has been irrigated to produce crops and stands of Cyprus trees. The intense sunlight creates a scorched whiteness and dark shadows. I have tried to capture the spirit of these vistas, colors and drama and translate them into an interpretation of my own. The colors I use come from my memories of the climate and topography of the area. Details become compressed into textures and gestural marks but vistas are kept open. I have used both the media of oil on canvas and pigment and wax on plaster, the plaster creating an organic texture of its own, by way of expressing my long connection to this part of the world.

Every Exploration Begins With A Voyage
VOYAGES Artist: Ben Westbrock

Reception: Thursday June 5th, 2008 @ 5:00 PM
End Date: Sunday June 29th, 2008

VOYAGES - A show of clay reliefs, oilstick studies and ink drawings by Ben Westbrock will be featured in the Jones Library, Burnett Gallery, in Amherst from June 2 to June 29. There will be an opening for the show from 5-8 P.M. on Thursday, June 5, during the monthly Art Walk in Amherst. The show will be open during regular library hours through June.

Mr. Westbrock sees the show as a "voyage," exploring line and color, both figurative and abstract, in a variety of media. He feels that every show should be a journey to an unknown land full of surprises and new experience. The show explores abstract form in clay reliefs with raku, acrylic and enamel spray surfaces; with pointillist black-and-white drawings set in wood frames; and with oilstick color landscapes on paper. He senses that the journey is ever-expanding, moving further and further into the unknown in each medium.

Shown here: "Cactus"(2007), a raku-fired, white clay relief. Approx. 18-20" in dimension.

Susan Middleton’s first poetry collection, Seed Case of the Heart, was published by Slate Roof Press in 2007. An Ashfield resident, Susan writes primarily about nature in its own right, as well as how it affects us as human beings and is affected by us. Her poems have appeared in The Berkshire Review, Peregrine, The Comstock Review, and Sanctuary. Also from Ashfield, Abbot Cutler has two books of poetry to his name: 1843 Rebecca 1847 (Rowan Tree Press) and The Dog Isn't Going Anywhere (Mad River Press). City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Art Walk Easthampton has an open call for visual, music and performance artists who would like to showcase their talents during the monthly Art Walk. Each of the venues that participate in the Walk independently select the artist or performer to feature. Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.

You can submit an "Artist Proposal" online by visiting www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and following the "Call for Artists" link at the bottom of the page. Once you have subscribed to the newsletter and confirmed your subscription, you can submit your proposal.

The process is a 3-page form with a series of questions: types of venues interested in, available dates, number of pieces proposed or length of performance, etc. Your answers form the proposal which is then made available to each of the venues. The venues make the selections. Your proposal is available to them for up to one year.

Submission Fees: None
Website: www.carvingstudio.org
City, ST: West Rutland, VT
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.

The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly
abundant in the area with quarries opening into the earth, equipment remnants and the modified landscape itself. SculptFest08 offers the opportunity for artists to respond to and interpret the post-industrial environment.

Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.

Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.

Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.

My teaching philosophy is to help an artist find their own unique process, style, and imagery. I offer thoughtful instruction on technique, composition, and color. I provide guidance to the next step of artistic development. In a typical class, you would be invited to bring your materials and the image you are working on. There is an ave. of 3 students per class.

Student Quote: "Alicia’s classes are most delightful. Her studio is peaceful and filled with beautiful art and light. Alicia guides everyone in the class, no matter what medium or style they use. She is very supportive, and has a professional “eye” combined with a dynamic manner. She has helped me to improve my painting step by step while encouraging me to find my own individual “style”. She is experienced to help both novices and advanced artists." J. Allard

Study guitar with Karl Rausch: jazz, blues, folk, rock and more. All levels, beginner to advanced, and all ages can learn songs and build a repertoire of music to perform.

These private lessons will help you become more expressive on the guitar. Improve your technique and avoid bad habits in a fun, supportive learning environment. Develop your reading skills and ear training, too.

More advanced students will explore improvisation and how scales relate to guitar solos. You'll also learn chord development to gain a greater understanding of harmony and theory.

Karl Rausch has played guitar for more than 40 years. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Karl has 10+ years teaching experience. He is a patient and non-judgemental musical coach. An active performer, Karl has multiple recordings as soloist, leader and side man. He currently plays throughout New England with the Clay Jazz Band.
