One piece was about orphan brands (don't cue the violins, yet). These are products that used to be well-known but have since disappeared from store shelves, often because they didn't fit into the line-up that a corporation wanted to offer in the wake of a mega-merger. Products like Brim coffee, "fill it to the rim with Brim." Or Salon Selectives, "you look like you stepped out of a salon." And, ones like Nuprin, "Nupe that headache." Poof they're gone and we hardly notice. Then, someone else buys the brand name and brings it back, in a newly constituted form, but without any connection to the prior product, company or employees. So what you see on the shelves may feel familiar, but it's an imitation.
Another article was about orphan artworks (now cue the violins). This is about legislation in Congress that would make it harder to protect the copyright of artworks if the artist is difficult to find (newsflash: artists often move). Under the proposed revision, as long as a company makes a "reasonable and appropriate" effort to to find the artist of older works, it's permissible to use it for commercial use. This is a bad idea that rewards the corporately lazy and the lawyerly sly. Urge your congressperson to oppose the copyright reform bill now before them.
And so goes the sad, but true, tale of two orphans...

The Doug Hewitt Group performs uniquely original rock & jazz drawing from many years of song writing plus covers ranging from John Coltrane to the Beatles. Last year Doug released "Picasso Tomato" his 6th album of all original music which is the groups main source of material. The band is Doug Hewitt on guitar and vocals, John Crankshaw on drums, Mitch Pine on piano, Robby Roiter on bass, Amy Bateman on violin, plus they welcome their newest member Dani Lorenzo on vocals. The Doug Hewitt Group performs three types of shows: jazz, rock and originals which fuse those genres.
Mat Herschler has been song writing since he was a kid. In his vagabond younger years he was introduced to and often performed with regional acts around the country and in Europe. Most recent credits include the title track of John Cruz' new album "One of these Days." Much experience as a side man, Mat now emerges as a solo performer. His unique piano stylings steeped in gospel, blues and R and B well support a richly expressive voice. His lyrics take on the tough subjects of the day. Drugs, madness, alienation, injustice and Love, war and peace.
Terry Rousso and Glen Stegner are a violin and piano duo who have been playing jazz and other improvisational styles together for many years. Terry has extensive classical training while Glen studied jazz with Kenny Baron. In addition to piano Glen often utilizes synthesizers to expand their music beyond the organic into the stratospheric.

Benefit Concert for the Flywheel Start Date: Saturday May 24th, 2008 Reception: Saturday May 24th, 2008 @ 8:00 PM End Date: Saturday May 24th, 2008 Location Name: The Williston Theatre, The Williston Northampton School Address: 19 Payson Avenue City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:www.williston.com Fee: $5
EASTHAMPTON - The Williston Northampton School will host a public benefit concert on May 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Williston Theatre to raise money for the Flywheel Arts Collective, an Easthampton-based music and arts non-profit venue. The night will feature two popular local acts: Mark Schwaber and Spouse, as well as Williston musicians Sarah Hubbard `12, John O’Connor `08, and Jeremy Boyle `08. The benefit, named "Make Noise!," is the senior project of Jeremy Boyle. Admission is $5.
The Flywheel Arts Collective recently moved from its former location at 2 Holyoke Street in Easthampton into the historic old Town Hall building on Main Street in the center of Easthampton. The new location is in need of building updates including the installation of a new sprinkler system before the group can open its doors. All proceeds from the show will go directly to Flywheel to help pay for renovations.
Boyle is a musician who aspires to being a concert producer and for his senior project, under the guidance of Williston music teacher Ben Demerath, decided to organize a concert. Knowing the Flywheel Arts Collective is a positive venue for the arts in Easthampton, he wanted to put together a show that was beneficial to them and entertaining for the community. He hopes to raise at least $1000 for the Flywheel. Boyle will be closing the night with a special set dedicated to Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.
The Williston Northampton School is a coeducational boarding and day school for students in seventh grade through post-graduate.

Definition: Hakaw Arabic language storyteller. We talk with Lebanese writer Rabih Alameddine about his new novel, THE HAKAWATI. A master storyteller himself, Alameddine spins a tapestry of tales, contemporary, epic and fantastical. At their core lies the story of a grandfather and his grandson in Beirut. The old man is a hakawati, one of the last of a dying breed. His grandson tells his story, and through it, the story of Lebanon itself.
And we talk with Greg Mitchell, about how the press and the punditocracy failed the public on Iraq. From his unique perch as editor of the trade journal, Editor and Publisher, Mitchell takes us over familiar territory with a fresh eye in his new book, SO WRONG FOR SO LONG: How the Press, the Pundits and the President Failed on Iraq.

Rabados De La Habana, Cuban Prints From The Collections Of Steven C. Daiber & Jaqueline A. Hayden
Event: Grabados de la Habana, Cuban prints from the collections of Steven C. Daiber & Jaqueline A. Hayden Start Date: Tuesday May 20th, 2008 Reception: Friday June 13th, 2008 @ 5:30 PM End Date: Friday June 27th, 2008 Location Name: Zea Mays Printmaking Address: 221 Pine St.#320 City, ST: Florence, MA Website:www.zeamaysprintmaking.com Fee: Free
Steven Daiber and Jacqueline Hayden have traveled to Cuba annually since the spring of 2000. During the academic year of 2003-04 they lived in Havana, Cuba for 10 months, where Steven had the opportunity to work in 5 different print shops with a variety of Cuban artists. Two of these are state run print shops that provide equipment, supplies, and opportunities for Cuban artists and foreigners to work. Another two shops are unofficially run, providing the same services and more. The fifth, a private shop recognized by the government, is amazingly equipped with an abundance of inks, paper, and presses. This is Cuba, the state and private enterprise coexisting, waiting for change.
In Havana, living with a Cuban family, Steven and Jacqueline worked with Cubans caught in the political bind between Cuba and the United States, using humor and creative ingenuity to survive and prosper. The prints in this exhibition were made by Cuban artists of all ages, from young college graduates to seasoned printmakers. The artists exhibited in Grabados de la Habana look at contemporary life in Cuba: masculinity and power, the daily water supply, old cars and hope.
Steven Daiber will give a talk at the opening reception about his experiences working and living with the Cuban people and the prints that developed out of their print shops.

The Artisan Gallery is pleased and proud to announce the opening of an exhibit of recent work by master potter Tom White. Among many other accomplishments, Mr. White was recently honored and included in the exhibit and publication, “21st Century Ceramics”, curated and edited by William Hunt.
Mr White comments on his work:
I feel fortunate that after 34 years, I’m still passionate about making pots.I anticipate the excitement each new wood firing brings - always revealing so much new information. New surfaces, new colors - the “I’ve never seen that before!” experience. When realizing those new pots at the wheel, I find myself planning the glaze and their placement in the kiln, in an effort to replicate the perfect pot of my mind’s eye. Although upon unloading, I’ll usually find pieces far more exciting than I could have imagined. I’m often thankful not to get what I’ve wanted – the surprising result often exceeds the imaginary. What a wonderful material.
My focus has always been on function; pots that are a joy to use, pots that give the user both comfort and mystery, pots that are enjoyed like an old friend and yet bring new discoveries with daily use. One might find a certain area of the glaze previously undiscovered or a small fingerprint at the base of a handle. And it may be that in the distant future some curious mind will piece together the shards of my pots, and in that mirror see my idea of utility, my sense of beauty, even the rhythms of my daily life.

are displayed in The Gallery. Barrie Wentzell created images for England's Melody Maker magazine in the late 1960s and early 1970s, setting the format for other publications including Rolling Stone magazine.
Barrie Wentzell, an internationally recognized photographer, was born in the mists of Northern England, now living in Toronto. Barrie was the chief photographer for Melody Maker Magazine, forerunner to Rolling Stone Magazine from 1965 - 1975. During that time he had access to the public and private lives of the music makers of the Golden Age of Rock and Roll. His black and white photo journalistic portraits exhibited in The Gallery are from a Limited Edition print series, which provides us with an honest and unique depiction of the personalities whose lyrics and music inspired generations and gave voice to the future. Barrie's commitment to his work coupled with his uncanny ability to capture the essence of the subjects he portrays has gained him public and critical acclaim. As Barrie once confided, "The picture gives you an impression, the music tells you everything. I wasn't trying to make them God, I was trying to make them truthful.&qu
ot;
Barrie's "Legends" include Neil Young, Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin, Leonard Cohen, Robert Plant, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Leon Russell, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, Grace Slick and Dr. John just to name a few. Individuals, as well as, public and private galleries and institutions worldwide collect Mr. Wentzell's Legend Series.

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.
The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly

Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.
Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.
Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.

Student Quote: "Alicia’s classes are most delightful. Her studio is peaceful and filled with beautiful art and light. Alicia guides everyone in the class, no matter what medium or style they use. She is very supportive, and has a professional “eye” combined with a dynamic manner. She has helped me to improve my painting step by step while encouraging me to find my own individual “style”. She is experienced to help both novices and advanced artists." J. Allard
