Thank you to everyone who participated in the first annual Easthampton Paint Out this past week. Forty-one artists took to the (not so) rough and tumble streets of Easthampton to create new, distinctive works of the area. Congratulations to Jack Braudis for winning the Grand Prize award and to Mischa Epstein Alvarado for taking home the People's Choice award. Stay tuned for next year's plein air event information.
This week's newsletter abounds with opportunities for sculptors. Check out the call for artists section for sculptor and installation artists who want to do outdoor work for display in Pittsfield, Mass, West Rutland, VT and Block Island, Rhode Island. If you like to work big and out, these are big opportunities.
Looking for something to explore for fun? Then may we recommend Saturday's Arts & Blooms event in Turners Falls and the Sunday reception in Southampton for Barrie Wentzell's photographs of 60's and 70's rock-n-roll icons. You can't go wrong with those picks to see something new and unexpected.
Best to all. Get your news in before mid-day on Monday to shout it out to the community. |

EASTHAMPTON - The Williston Northampton School will host a public benefit concert on May 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Williston Theatre to raise money for the Flywheel Arts Collective, an Easthampton-based music and arts non-profit venue. The night will feature two popular local acts: Mark Schwaber and Spouse, as well as Williston musicians Sarah Hubbard `12, John O’Connor `08, and Jeremy Boyle `08. The benefit, named "Make Noise!," is the senior project of Jeremy Boyle. Admission is $5.
The Flywheel Arts Collective recently moved from its former location at 2 Holyoke Street in Easthampton into the historic old Town Hall building on Main Street in the center of Easthampton. The new location is in need of building updates including the installation of a new sprinkler system before the group can open its doors. All proceeds from the show will go directly to Flywheel to help pay for renovations.
Boyle is a musician who aspires to being a concert producer and for his senior project, under the guidance of Williston music teacher Ben Demerath, decided to organize a concert. Knowing the Flywheel Arts Collective is a positive venue for the arts in Easthampton, he wanted to put together a show that was beneficial to them and entertaining for the community. He hopes to raise at least $1000 for the Flywheel. Boyle will be closing the night with a special set dedicated to Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.
The Williston Northampton School is a coeducational boarding and day school for students in seventh grade through post-graduate. |

We talk with novelists Elizabeth Strout and Adam Mansbach. Strout’s new book, OLIVE KITTREDGE, uses a collection of short stories to create a novel about the inhabitants of a coastal town in Maine. Strout explores the complex humanity of her characters as they evolve over time, revealing checkered depths of light and dark.
And Adam Mansbach also explores ambiguity — of cultural boundaries, marginality and continuity–in his new novel, THE END OF THE JEWS. He examines the thin line between appreciation and appropriation, as his largely Jewish characters connect with African American culture — jazz and hip-hop — to create a more fluid sense of identity. Mansbach was the founding editor of the pioneering ’90s hip hop journal Elementary, and also worked for the legendary jazz drummer Elvin Jones for several years as a roadie. |

Steven Daiber and Jacqueline Hayden have traveled to Cuba annually since the spring of 2000. During the academic year of 2003-04 they lived in Havana, Cuba for 10 months, where Steven had the opportunity to work in 5 different print shops with a variety of Cuban artists. Two of these are state run print shops that provide equipment, supplies, and opportunities for Cuban artists and foreigners to work. Another two shops are unofficially run, providing the same services and more. The fifth, a private shop recognized by the government, is amazingly equipped with an abundance of inks, paper, and presses. This is Cuba, the state and private enterprise coexisting, waiting for change.
In Havana, living with a Cuban family, Steven and Jacqueline worked with Cubans caught in the political bind between Cuba and the United States, using humor and creative ingenuity to survive and prosper. The prints in this exhibition were made by Cuban artists of all ages, from young college graduates to seasoned printmakers. The artists exhibited in Grabados de la Habana look at contemporary life in Cuba: masculinity and power, the daily water supply, old cars and hope.
Steven Daiber will give a talk at the opening reception about his experiences working and living with the Cuban people and the prints that developed out of their print shops. |

The Artisan Gallery is pleased and proud to announce the opening of an exhibit of recent work by master potter Tom White. Among many other accomplishments, Mr. White was recently honored and included in the exhibit and publication, “21st Century Ceramics”, curated and edited by William Hunt.
Mr White comments on his work:
I feel fortunate that after 34 years, I’m still passionate about making pots.I anticipate the excitement each new wood firing brings - always revealing so much new information. New surfaces, new colors - the “I’ve never seen that before!” experience. When realizing those new pots at the wheel, I find myself planning the glaze and their placement in the kiln, in an effort to replicate the perfect pot of my mind’s eye. Although upon unloading, I’ll usually find pieces far more exciting than I could have imagined. I’m often thankful not to get what I’ve wanted – the surprising result often exceeds the imaginary. What a wonderful material.
My focus has always been on function; pots that are a joy to use, pots that give the user both comfort and mystery, pots that are enjoyed like an old friend and yet bring new discoveries with daily use. One might find a certain area of the glaze previously undiscovered or a small fingerprint at the base of a handle. And it may be that in the distant future some curious mind will piece together the shards of my pots, and in that mirror see my idea of utility, my sense of beauty, even the rhythms of my daily life. |

Nothing, No thing
Nothing, No thing is a new solo piece by Miguel Gutierrez
Miguel Gutierrez is a dance and music artist based in Brooklyn, NY since 1997. He creates group work as director of Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People and he also creates small scale and solo projects. Since 2001 he has made enter the seen, I succumb, Sabotage (in collaboration with Jaime Fennelly), dAMNATION rOAD, Retrospective Exhibitionist and Difficult Bodies, myendlesslove, and Everyone. He collaborates with a wide range of contemporary dance, music and visual artists.
Gutierrez's work is borne from basic questions regarding existence and the theatrical situation: Who are we and why are we here? What binds the performers and viewers in an attentive space of perception? How is a dance performance a practice for experiencing the intricacy of the mind/body system? These questions drive the work, and the urgent bodies inside of it. These bodies are full of desire: to be loved, to communicate, and to understand the complexity of identity. Gutierrez is interested in "hyper presence," where the real becomes more real, while restlessly situated within the artifice of the stage. He is fascinated by how the transcendent can emerge out of the ordinary at any moment.

are displayed in The Gallery. Barrie Wentzell created images for England's Melody Maker magazine in the late 1960s and early 1970s, setting the format for other publications including Rolling Stone magazine.
Barrie Wentzell, an internationally recognized photographer, was born in the mists of Northern England, now living in Toronto. Barrie was the chief photographer for Melody Maker Magazine, forerunner to Rolling Stone Magazine from 1965 - 1975. During that time he had access to the public and private lives of the music makers of the Golden Age of Rock and Roll. His black and white photo journalistic portraits exhibited in The Gallery are from a Limited Edition print series, which provides us with an honest and unique depiction of the personalities whose lyrics and music inspired generations and gave voice to the future. Barrie's commitment to his work coupled with his uncanny ability to capture the essence of the subjects he portrays has gained him public and critical acclaim. As Barrie once confided, "The picture gives you an impression, the music tells you everything. I wasn't trying to make them God, I was trying to make them truthful.&qu
ot;
Barrie's "Legends" include Neil Young, Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin, Leonard Cohen, Robert Plant, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Leon Russell, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, Grace Slick and Dr. John just to name a few. Individuals, as well as, public and private galleries and institutions worldwide collect Mr. Wentzell's Legend Series. |

Submission Fees: None

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites sculptors to submit proposals for Sculpt-Fest08, September 13-October 26.
The theme for this year’s event is “Human Interventions and the Industrial Landscape” and guest curator is Carlos Dorrien, Sculpture Professor at Wellesley College. Vermont’s landscape abounds with evidence of human alterations to nature. Reminders of former activity are particularly
abundant in the area with quarries opening into the earth, equipment remnants and the modified landscape itself. SculptFest08 offers the opportunity for artists to respond to and interpret the post-industrial environment.
Ten artists will be selected to create large-scale outdoor installations responsive to the theme and site.
Appointments for site tours may be made through the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. Submissions are due by July 7. Notification will occur before the end of July and artists will be provided access to the site from that day forward to the opening reception on Saturday, September 13. An artist’s stipend is awarded for selected proposals and an illustrated catalog will be published.
Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten 35mm slides (or digital images on a CD) portraying previous site-specific work.
Address submissions to “SculptFest08,” the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, P.O. Box 495, West Rutland, VT 05777. |

Learn to create with clay! This workshop will teach you the ancient technique of African coiling. West african women used this technique to make their cooking pots. The tradition was handed down from mother to daughter. I was taught this technique by the daughter of Ma Lou, one of the National Treasures of Jamaica.
You will learn the same techniques, with a modern twist. You will create at least one form that will take you 2 days to complete. We will have a slide show, and teach you some carving techniques to enhance your piece.
You will enjoy this workshop, and will have a handmade masterpiece at the end of workshop. Clay, tools, and firing included.

This course is for those who want to do more with their digital images but aren't ready to make the leap to Photoshop CS3. While Photoshop CS3 is the program of choice for serious amateurs and professional photographers, Elements offers an amazing array of tools taken its big brother’s bag of tricks for the more casual digital tinkerer.
We will learn the layout of the program and help us separate the tools we need from the ones that are primarily for special effects. This class will focus on how to take our photos from good to great by applying the time honored principles of a good print using the tools in this powerful program. Topics will also include some advance techniques such as layers and masking.
This class is taught using Elements 6.0, the latest version of Elements. Users of earlier versions of Elements will learn invaluable information although some tools may be slightly different in this latest version.
