Ipso Thinko
I saw an article this weekend that had a term I really liked ... thinko.

A "thinko" is like a typo but the error is all in your head. I also like that it has a sort of regal "from the Latin" or lawyer-speak kind of sound to it. So I'm adding to it, building up the expression to add some unnecessary grandeur. Now it's "Ipso thinko" ... by that very stupid thought I had. From now on when you remember something incorrectly, or feel just plain dumb, you can justify it through the very proper sounding, "Ipso Thinko." I like it.

Now it's on to the art world. This week's art schedule has a full slate of events throughout the Pioneer Valley. There are very strong shows going on from Amherst to Turners Falls. Of course, I'd like to call out this Saturday's Art Walk Easthampton which includes a plein air paint out. Grab your easel and set up outdoors in Easthampton from Thursday morning to Saturday afternoon with an artists' reception on Saturday night. The rules are in the Call for Artists section down, down, down below. And if you love local scenery, be sure to stop by Nashawannnuck Gallery to see all the fresh new works and to cast your ballot for the 'People's Choice" award.

And there's so much more. Have a great week!

Meditation: Work By Chris Page And Ali Moshiri

wünderarts is pleased to announce MEDITATION, an exhibition of the work of local artists Chris Page and Ali Moshiri. The exhibition features the artists’ meditative explorations of the natural and imagined worlds around them.

Chris Page’s travels have had a strong influence on his work. In 1995, Page traveled to the northern part of Baffin Island landing in Pond Inlet, 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Influenced by the colors and profound openness of the Artic, Page’s painting became very focused on merging abstraction and landscape. Page has started to work from memory and knowledge of stream flow pattern in his most recent work, influenced and inspired by the power and intimacy of prayer and meditation experienced during a 2004 Bahá’í pilgrimage to Haifa, Israel.

Ali Moshiri’s work is based on observations from nature, but primarily landscape. His work over the past 15 years, while still based on these observations, has veered toward abstraction, though he does not see it as such. “The ultimate result is that of the paint and the painted surface, in an attempt to capture its own nature without any hints or references to anything external to the painting,” says Moshiri about his work. “I feel music is the highest art form that stands on its own elements and capabilities. I strive to achieve that in painting. Within this framework I do not see my work as abstractions. They are what they are.”

The shores of New England and New Jersey, and the rocks, trees and mountains of New York are the starting points for my drawings and paintings. I grew up around Albany and the the Dutch influence is still strong there, and it serves as the basis for my painting tradition. Washington Irving and the painters of the early 1800s captured the wildness still lurking under a region that was getting civilized even then. My paintings combine the timeless elements of the landscape with the civilizers of our own age.

Ed Popielarczyk is a professional magician, balloon twister, entertainer. Ed takes a lot of pride in bringing smiles to his friend's faces. Whether he is performing a magic show or making a balloon creation, he is entertaining. Nothing, No thing is a new solo piece by Miguel Gutierrez

Miguel Gutierrez is a dance and music artist based in Brooklyn, NY since 1997. He creates group work as director of Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People and he also creates small scale and solo projects. Since 2001 he has made enter the seen, I succumb, Sabotage (in collaboration with Jaime Fennelly), dAMNATION rOAD, Retrospective Exhibitionist and Difficult Bodies, myendlesslove, and Everyone. He collaborates with a wide range of contemporary dance, music and visual artists.

Gutierrez's work is borne from basic questions regarding existence and the theatrical situation: Who are we and why are we here? What binds the performers and viewers in an attentive space of perception? How is a dance performance a practice for experiencing the intricacy of the mind/body system? These questions drive the work, and the urgent bodies inside of it. These bodies are full of desire: to be loved, to communicate, and to understand the complexity of identity. Gutierrez is interested in "hyper presence," where the real becomes more real, while restlessly situated within the artifice of the stage. He is fascinated by how the transcendent can emerge out of the ordinary at any moment.

and an opportunity to meet, greet and introduce yourself to artists specializing in photography. The Gallery and Learning Center believe we need to tell our stories to continue the healing process. Society and life often position artists in a situation where there is no voice. This is countered by providing a venue for several years now, inviting the community to these Sunday afternoon Gallery Talks. The Talks have confirmed our identity, motivated us and have given us an insight into the artist's story...with no two stories being alike! Photographer or not, these Talks are targeted those who care to listen!

are displayed in The Gallery. Barrie Wentzell created images for England's Melody Maker magazine in the late 1960s and early 1970s, setting the format for other publications including Rolling Stone magazine.

Barrie Wentzell, an internationally recognized photographer, was born in the mists of Northern England, now living in Toronto. Barrie was the chief photographer for Melody Maker Magazine, forerunner to Rolling Stone Magazine from 1965 - 1975. During that time he had access to the public and private lives of the music makers of the Golden Age of Rock and Roll. His black and white photo journalistic portraits exhibited in The Gallery are from a Limited Edition print series, which provides us with an honest and unique depiction of the personalities whose lyrics and music inspired generations and gave voice to the future. Barrie's commitment to his work coupled with his uncanny ability to capture the essence of the subjects he portrays has gained him public and critical acclaim. As Barrie once confided, "The picture gives you an impression, the music tells you everything. I wasn't trying to make them God, I was trying to make them truthful.&qu ot;
Barrie's "Legends" include Neil Young, Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin, Leonard Cohen, Robert Plant, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Leon Russell, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, Grace Slick and Dr. John just to name a few. Individuals, as well as, public and private galleries and institutions worldwide collect Mr. Wentzell's Legend Series. Barrie's photographic contributio

Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.

Short Story Fiction Submissions Accepted
Sponsoring Group Name: WXOJ LP FM
Show Name: SHORT STORY FICTION SUBMISSIONS ACCEPTED
Submission Due Date: Wednesday December 31st, 2008
Submission Fees: none
Website: Lit1033.com
City, ST: Northampton, MA
At 1:00 PM every Tuesday, on WXOJ LP, 103.3 (Valley Free Radio), Lit103.3 airs the reading of one or two short stories. If a story is selected for airing it will also be available in print and podcast form on the show's website at http://www.lit1033.com. Each show consists of one or two stories with a total word count of 6,000-9,000 words.

If you would like to submit a story for consideration, email it to lit103.3@comcast.net. DO NOT SEND IT AS AN ATTACHMENT, rather, include it in the body of your email, together with any biographical or other relevant information you'd like read before/after the broadcast.

Because the reading is over the public airwaves FCC guidelines apply. Like Norman Mailer in The Naked and the Dead, the reader can fug around with words to a certain extent, but if the overall sexual content is too explicit it won't work. The explicit original story will be available on the website.

Direct questions and submissions to Alan Vogel at lit103.3@comcast.net
