Spring Sprang Sprung

Spring is in full swing and like the weeds in the lawn, opportunities for artists continue to sprout. Scroll below to read the "calls for artists" for three exciting outdoor events: the Easthampton Paint Out on May 8-10 during which plein air painters will create, exhibit and compete, the Great Falls Art Fest in Turner's Falls on May 17 and 18 benefiting community programs at The Brick House, and the West Boylston Bicentennial Arts Festival (just north of Worcester) on September 20th benefiting art and music programs in public schools. Deadlines for artist entries are coming up soon!

Last week's column about the critical need for Gallery Dogs brought some fun responses, including puppy photo submissions. Turns out being a gallery dog is a highly sought-after position. The photo to the left includes Allen, a big brindle Greyhound, who used to race but is now seeking a more artistic lifestyle, and Lucy, known to visitors of Nashawannuck Gallery for her greet'em-and-leave'em attitude. If you're a puppy lover, you might also like to get your morning lick fix at The Daily Puppy.

Do you have an arts-related announcement to make? Get your submission in by mid-day next Monday using the Article Submission Form located here.

Location Name: Hampden Studio Gallery UMass
Address: University Drive
City, ST: Amherst, MA

Deborah Garner's solo exhibition of new works on paper in monoprint, collage, and mixed media, as well as paintings in oil and watercolor. Imagery is sourced from the realm of dreams and personal excursions in the nocturnal stream of consciousness.

Artist Statement excerpt:
"All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream" - Edgar Allen Poe

"Recent image-making explores my own psyche, the Collective Unconscious, and the serendipitous merger of the ineffable with ink and paper. The images invite the viewer to enter these ephemeral worlds by imaginative projection ; to animate them with their own thoughts and feelings, and to perhaps catch a glimpse of a reality they were formerly unaware of. With attention, these works become portals, narratives of the inner life perpetually flowing from the subliminal Mindspring that we all share."

A lifelong student of world culture, dealer in tribal and folk art, and independent researcher in cross-cultural symbolism, Garner's travels in the physical world often re-emerge as "almost" familiar settings in the dream world. The resulting images produce what the artist likes to call "postcards from the edge of consciousness".

Artist Statement:
This work is about finding balance,
the swinging pendulum between dualities and
the integration of the shadow and the light within.

There is a place or even a way of being;
a middle way where the pendulum is centered.
A place where dualities integrate and balance
is achieved. The Grey place of non-duality.
I imagine this is a place of stillness and contentment
where the needing to know the answer stops,
where you are in the present in the here and now,
and where you can climb up the string
to achieve a higher perspective.
~ Alicia Hunsicker 2008

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides;
all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in
everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the
measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.
“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything
has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same;
opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree;
extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths;
all paradoxes may be reconciled.”
Baltzell's new work is an exploration in mixed media collage. Her work and the title of the exhibition refers to the bright promises of childhood which may or may not have been realized; spirituality; coming to terms with a haunting parental legacy; an acknowledgement of life's lack of roadmaps and pre-set patterns to follow.
Laura "Lola" Baltzell is a long-term yogini who started her yoga life in 1993. She currently teaches prenatal yoga. She is a self-taught artist. For Baltzell, art-making and yoga are intertwined and inform one an other other.
There will be time to learn about membership, small press publishing, and chapbook creation.
Bernardston resident Jim Bell will read from Crossing the Bar(Slate Roof Press, 2005). Poet Gene Zeiger called his work "pare and muscular...perfectly tuned to his content"; while Jan Frazier commented, "Jim Bell's poems wake up your senses...They shock you back to life." His poems have appeared in Aethlon, Peregrine, and Concrete Wolf. Jim is a track and field coach at Pioneer Valley High School; poems and pole-vaulting are his passions.
From Northfield, poet and master printer Ed Rayher will read poems from his book forthcoming from Slate Roof. His work has been published in Antgonish Review, Colorado Quarterly, Washout Review, and 4 Zoas. Williston Theatre Presents City Of Angels
City of Angels, a film noir musical Event: City of Angels, a film noir musical
Start Date: Thursday April 24th, 2008
Reception: Thursday April 24th, 2008 @ 6:30 PM
End Date: Saturday May 3rd, 2008
Location Name: The Williston Theatre
Address: 18 Payson Avenue
City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Website: www.williston.com
Fee: 10.00
The Williston Northampton School presents the musical City of Angels on April 24, 25, 26 and May 1, 2, 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased in advance through the box office at 529-3434.
Tony Award-winner City of Angels, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, book by Larry Gelbart, and vocal arrangements by Cy Coleman and Yaron Gershovsky, tells the story of a writer named Stine, who has been hired to adapt one of his detective novels into a movie. Half of the musical tells the story of the "real life" Stine and his troubles in 1930's Hollywood, and the other half of the musical tells the story of the "movie" detective Stone and his investigations into a corrupt world of greed, blackmail, and murder. Actors play roles both in the "real" world and the "movie" world, which makes the set design visually exciting with rolling platforms, turntables, and projections presenting the "real" world in color and the "movie" world in black and white.
Williston Theatre Director David Nields returns to the school from a winter sabbatical at Walt Disney World where he honed his skills of stagecraft and new multimedia technologies. City of Angels will be his first large-scale musical since his return.
The production is open to the public and takes place in the Williston Theatre at The Williston Northampton School located at 18 Payson Avenue, Easthampton, MA, 01027. Campus directions are available here. For more information, please call (413) 529-3434.
Celebration Of Poetry Month With Poets
End Date: Thursday April 24th, 2008
Location Name: 93.3FM WXOJ FM Valley Free Radio
City, ST: Florence, MA
During Poetry Month, we’ve featured some of the most famous poets in the English language. They occupy the heights of what many think is a rarified domain not relevant to the average person. But the poets of Florence Poets Society disagree. They declare that “poetry is part of everyone of us”. Based in Northampton, Massachusetts, the Florence Poets Society goes both local and international. Its monthly meetings draw local talent and its annual online poetry contest draw poems from around the world. They publish the best poems in an annual anthology, The Silkworm. We speak with three of the Society’s poets: Tom Clark, Carl Russo and Jim Cahillane. Clark, a firefighter, and Carl Russo, a lawyer, started the Florence Poets Society five years ago.
We also talk with Mark Eleveld, editor of the SPOKEN WORD REVOLUTION REDUX, about poetry in performance--hip-hop, poetry slams and more.
Visual Fields - Monotypes And Monoprints
Visual Fields - an exhibition of monotypes and monoprints Artist: Nancy Van Deren, Sarah Creighton, Erika Radich
Event: Visual Fields - an exhibition of monotypes and monoprints
Start Date: Tuesday April 8th, 2008
End Date: Friday May 9th, 2008
Location Name: Arts and Industry Building
Address: 221 Pine St., Studio 320
City, ST: Florence, MA
This month in the Gallery at Zea Mays Printmaking, we are delighted to be presenting three artists working in the painterly, abstract and intuitive language of nature. Although the language of landscape and abstraction weaves these three artists together, the excitement of the show comes from the particular way that each artist responds to simple forms and subtle color. Nancy Van Deren’s painting background is informing this current work. She is showing prints that include marks and looping lines within or behind color fields that define her found shapes. Sarah Creighton is showing her new work that incorperates her experiences in the landscapes of the Connecticut River and intuitive abstractions focusing on reflection, pattern and the play of light. Erika Radich’s images are created in a layered approach. Her forms grow into roundness, tossed into shapes that live in and through multiple textures. A s a whole, the “visual fields” that these three artists create leave us feeling open, curious, and looking very closely to light and form.
Zea Mays Printmaking is a studio, workshop, educational facility and research center dedicated to new approaches in printmaking. We focus on safer and non-toxic approaches to printmaking for the health of artists and the environment.
Exhibition viewing hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 11-4, Wednesdays 12-8, 1st and 3rd Saturday and Sunday of the month, 11-4.
The 24-hour Theater Project At The Northampton Center For The Arts
Event: The 24-Hour Theater Project
Start Date: Saturday April 26th, 2008
Reception: Saturday April 26th, 2008 @ 7:00 PM
End Date: Saturday April 26th, 2008
Location Name: Northampton Center for the Arts
Address: 17 New South Street Third Floor
City, ST: Northampton, MA
Website: www.nohoarts.org
Fee: $12/$10
The premise is simple, the execution anything but: Within 24 hours, five short plays will be written, directed, rehearsed, produced, and staged. The Northampton Project was founded in 2002 by local playwright Tanyss Rhea Martula. Playwrights for this year's show are Phil O'Donoghue, Cynthia Kennison, Meryl Cohn, Eric Sanders, and Jay Indik. The five plays will be directed by Liz Foley, Ginny Mayer, Tim Cochran, John Hadden, and Chris Rohmann. Among the 17 actors are Bill Dwight, Court Dorsey, Judith Fine, Linda Putnam, and Pat Mew. The playwrights draw lots on Friday evening to find out how many characters are in the plays they have the next 10-12 hours to write; the directors draw the plays out of a hat on Saturday morning, huddle with casts and crew--and the race is on to the premiere at 7 pm and a second performance at 9 pm. This is theater without a net, and the risk-taking for writers, directors, and actors generates a lot of excitement for the participants as well as for the audience. Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for students and seniors 65+. They are available in advance by calling the Center for the Arts at (413) 584-7327. Sorry, no credit cards. Tickets are held at the door. Seating is open.
Wb Bicentennial Call For Artists
Sponsoring Group Name: West Boylston Arts Foundation
Show Name: West Boylston Bicentennial Arts Festival
Submission Due Date: Sunday April 20th, 2008
Website: www.wbaf.org
City, ST: West Boylston, MA
The West Boylston Arts Foundation (WBAF) seeks artists, musicians and performers for the West Boylston Bicentennial Arts Festival on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Goodale Park in West Boylston, MA (located just north of Worcester).
The WBAF was founded last year in response to town budget cuts that eliminated school art and music programs. Over the past year the WBAF has restored music and arts to elementary and middle school, but much remains to be done. All Festival proceeds will be dedicated to West Boylston school art, music and theater programs.
The West Boylston Bicentennial is a major event with activities all year. The Festival will include artist sales, music & cultural performances, theater, and an auction, transitioning to an evening program of more music, a square dance, and a celebration bonfire. The weekend will culminate with a town parade and fireworks on Sunday, Sept. 21.
World renown engraver and illustrator Barry Moser will conduct his second workshop on wood and relief engraving at Zea Mays Printmaking. A medium that ranks with the mezzotint and fresco in its degree of difficulty will be presented in clear and simple terms by a master of the medium. We will discuss, explore and learn the rudiments of how to draw for the engraving process, how to prepare a block, how to transfer images, how to hold and sharpen the tools, how to engrave an image and finally how to pull a proof by hand. Wood is very scarce, so we will be using an inexpensive substitute called Resingrave, a material that Moser has used exclusively since 1995.
Zea Mays Printmaking is a studio and workshop dedicated to safer and non-toxic approaches to printmaking. We are a pioneer in the field. We offer a variety of workshops throughout the year. They are limited to 10 participants and fill quickly.
Learn to create with clay! This workshop will teach you the ancient technique of African coiling. West african women used this technique to make their cooking pots. The tradition was handed down from mother to daughter. I was taught this technique by the daughter of Ma Lou, one of the National Treasures of Jamaica.
You will learn the same techniques, with a modern twist. You will create at least one form that will take you 2 days to complete. We will have a slide show, and teach you some carving techniques to enhance your piece.
You will enjoy this workshop, and will have a handmade masterpiece at the end of workshop. Clay, tools, and firing included.
While opening to the poetic light of dusk, participants in this session will be guided through a series of insight meditation exercises, the practice of non-judgmental awareness, and embodied breath-work--all applied to a range of form, space and thematic drawing explorations on paper. The intention is to develop potential for a contemplative transformation of the artist's inner energy while working with basic principles of drawing and composition. Through the use of drawing tools and water-based medium on paper, we will create drawings that focus our attention on singular form and space combinations of point, line, circle, triangle, square, lotus, spiral, fluid forms, space, contrast, and union. We will also work with music and dance metaphors. Students should be prepared to engage in an insight meditation at the beginning of class, participate in a series of guided visual art exercises, then work independently from those exercises during class and at least once between classes. Willingness to cultivate compassion and acceptance toward yourself, the group, and your work required! $195 plus materials. Thursday evenings for 5 weeks, April 24-May 22, 6:30-9:30 pm.
