I've been in my fair share of galleries. Some specialize in paintings. Some in photography. Others in a wide assortment of mediums. And I've come to a conclusion; every gallery needs a dog. A mascot of art.
Lazy and loveable. Ambling up to smell your hand and say 'hi.' Leaning in to get an ear rubbed. These amiable companions create a sense of ease and personality that makes looking at the collection a more enjoyable experience. A cat will do in a pinch.
So, I'm not sure if the guideline should be at the local, state or federal level. I don't know if there should be rallies for it. Perhaps it's just a competitive advantage in a dog eat dog world. Nothing like a belly rub to put one in a good mood. The dog's, of course.

Deborah Garner's solo exhibition of new works on paper in monoprint, collage, and mixed media, as well as paintings in oil and watercolor. Imagery is sourced from the realm of dreams and personal excursions in the nocturnal stream of consciousness.
Artist Statement excerpt:
"All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream" - Edgar Allen Poe
"Recent image-making explores my own psyche, the Collective Unconscious, and the serendipitous merger of the ineffable with ink and paper. The images invite the viewer to enter these ephemeral worlds by imaginative projection ; to animate them with their own thoughts and feelings, and to perhaps catch a glimpse of a reality they were formerly unaware of. With attention, these works become portals, narratives of the inner life perpetually flowing from the subliminal Mindspring that we all share."
A lifelong student of world culture, dealer in tribal and folk art, and independent researcher in cross-cultural symbolism, Garner's travels in the physical world often re-emerge as "almost" familiar settings in the dream world. The resulting images produce what the artist likes to call "postcards from the edge of consciousness".

Between The Darkness And The Light

Artist Statement:
This work is about finding balance,
the swinging pendulum between dualities and
the integration of the shadow and the light within.
There is a place or even a way of being;
a middle way where the pendulum is centered.
A place where dualities integrate and balance
is achieved. The Grey place of non-duality.
I imagine this is a place of stillness and contentment
where the needing to know the answer stops,
where you are in the present in the here and now,
and where you can climb up the string
to achieve a higher perspective.
~ Alicia Hunsicker 2008
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides;
all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in
everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the
measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.
“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything
has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same;
opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree;
extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths;
all paradoxes may be reconciled.”
Williston Theatre Presents City Of Angels
Tony Award-winner City of Angels, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, book by Larry Gelbart, and vocal arrangements by Cy Coleman and Yaron Gershovsky, tells the story of a writer named Stine, who has been hired to adapt one of his detective novels into a movie. Half of the musical tells the story of the "real life" Stine and his troubles in 1930's Hollywood, and the other half of the musical tells the story of the "movie" detective Stone and his investigations into a corrupt world of greed, blackmail, and murder. Actors play roles both in the "real" world and the "movie" world, which makes the set design visually exciting with rolling platforms, turntables, and projections presenting the "real" world in color and the "movie" world in black and white.
Williston Theatre Director David Nields returns to the school from a winter sabbatical at Walt Disney World where he honed his skills of stagecraft and new multimedia technologies. City of Angels will be his first large-scale musical since his return.
The production is open to the public and takes place in the Williston Theatre at The Williston Northampton School located at 18 Payson Avenue, Easthampton, MA, 01027. Campus directions are available here. For more information, please call (413) 529-3434.
Visual Fields - Monotypes And Monoprints
This month in the Gallery at Zea Mays Printmaking, we are delighted to be presenting three artists working in the painterly, abstract and intuitive language of nature. Although the language of landscape and abstraction weaves these three artists together, the excitement of the show comes from the particular way that each artist responds to simple forms and subtle color. Nancy Van Deren’s painting background is informing this current work. She is showing prints that include marks and looping lines within or behind color fields that define her found shapes. Sarah Creighton is showing her new work that incorperates her experiences in the landscapes of the Connecticut River and intuitive abstractions focusing on reflection, pattern and the play of light. Erika Radich’s images are created in a layered approach. Her forms grow into roundness, tossed into shapes that live in and through multiple textures. A
s a whole, the “visual fields” that these three artists create leave us feeling open, curious, and looking very closely to light and form.
Zea Mays Printmaking is a studio, workshop, educational facility and research center dedicated to new approaches in printmaking. We focus on safer and non-toxic approaches to printmaking for the health of artists and the environment.
Exhibition viewing hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 11-4, Wednesdays 12-8, 1st and 3rd Saturday and Sunday of the month, 11-4.
No other local venue has committed to honoring women with annual opportunities to be seen an heard. This year's theme is Environmental Portraiture. "An environmental portrait supplies enough details with props and choice of background to share with and present to the viewer something about the lifestyle of the person. In an environmental portrait, the subject is photographed at home, at the office, or on location, whichever best portrays the person's story. Far from the posed safe studio portrait with a seamless background, an environmental portrait positions the subject amid everyday objects of her life." The subject may live anywhere in the world.
The Gallery is dedicated to artists telling their story...this month artists are telling her-story!
Engraving Workshop With Barry Moser
Class Name: Engraving with Barry Moser Class Time: 10:00 AM Start Date: Saturday May 3rd, 2008 End Date: Sunday May 4th, 2008 Fee: $300 Organization: Zea Mays Printmaking Location Name: Zea Mays Printmaking Address: 221 Pine St. City, ST: Florence, MA Website:www.zeamaysprintmaking.com
World renown engraver and illustrator Barry Moser will conduct his second workshop on wood and relief engraving at Zea Mays Printmaking. A medium that ranks with the mezzotint and fresco in its degree of difficulty will be presented in clear and simple terms by a master of the medium. We will discuss, explore and learn the rudiments of how to draw for the engraving process, how to prepare a block, how to transfer images, how to hold and sharpen the tools, how to engrave an image and finally how to pull a proof by hand. Wood is very scarce, so we will be using an inexpensive substitute called Resingrave, a material that Moser has used exclusively since 1995.
African Coiling Workshop
Class Name: African Coiling Workshop Class Time: 10:00 AM Start Date: Saturday May 24th, 2008 End Date: Sunday May 25th, 2008 Fee: 190.00 Organization: Juliet Rose Gallery & Studio Location Name: Juliet Rose Gallery Address: 191 Reimers Rd. City, ST: Monson, MA Website:www.julietrosegallery.net
Learn to create with clay! This workshop will teach you the ancient technique of African coiling. West african women used this technique to make their cooking pots. The tradition was handed down from mother to daughter. I was taught this technique by the daughter of Ma Lou, one of the National Treasures of Jamaica.
You will learn the same techniques, with a modern twist. You will create at least one form that will take you 2 days to complete. We will have a slide show, and teach you some carving techniques to enhance your piece.
You will enjoy this workshop, and will have a handmade masterpiece at the end of workshop. Clay, tools, and firing included.
