DOROTHY OSTERMAN
Dorothy Osterman has been exploring the medium of gouache paint since 1961. She writes of her work in a recent statement:
With my new series of gouache paintings I have become more of an observer, watching and taking my direction from the flow and action of the water and paint on white paper.

HELENA DOOLEY -- Dieting: You want fries with that?
Helena Dooley's newest work is a collection of dieting facts displayed on glass, canvas and paper. There are more facts than one would have thought possible! For example: Talk actually generates calories. A complex chart reveals which conversations create the greatest number of calories per minute. Basically, Dooley said, Loose lips, fat hips!ť Dooley did extensive work on this subject in a gym class where she noted that those who chatted during exercise actually gained large amounts of weight! Also included are several revealing food pyramids that explain everything about not only weight and nutrition but also character. She writes in her statement,

"I've always suspected that food was an important factor in weight gain but attention to the subject of chatting has opened up a whole new world of weight-gain worry."ť

A ground-breaking, medically important section of the show covers some of the more alarming side effects of diet fare: such as bezoars, which are indigestible masses of fiber "much like hairballs in cats" but caused by over-consumption of celery.

ALICIA HUNSICKER –In "Between The Darkness and The Light" Hunsicker presents a new body of oil paintings and sculptures built from organic materials including bone, eggs, and branches.

Hunsicker's work is self-reflective. Her work explores the dualities of existence, particularly the integration between the shadow and light.

Hunsicker of Leyden, was the founder and director of the former, Gallery 267, in Greenfield.

DEBORAH GARNER - A Solo exhibition of new works on paper Imagery is sourced from the realm of dreams and personal excursions in the nocturnal stream of consciousness,

A lifelong student of world culture, dealer in tribal and folk art, and independent researcher in cross-cultural symbolism, Garner's travels in the physical world often re-emerge as "almost" familiar settings in the dream world.

The resulting images produce what the artist likes to call "postcards from the edge of consciousness".

LAURA "LOLA" BALTZELL - Baltzell's new exhibit is an exploration in mixed media collage. Baltzell has previously worked primarily with oils which lends themselves to the multiple transparent layers that make up her surfaces. That technique is extended into her new collage work, to which she adds ephemera, both text and images.

Laura "Lola" Baltzell is a long-term yogini who started her yoga life in 1993. She currently teaches prenatal yoga. She is a self-taught artist. For her, art-making and yoga are intertwined and inform one an other other.

One thing I miss during the winter months is color. A hearty old New England winter, such as this has been, gives us plenty of rain, snow, ice, and cold, but still thinks nothing of taking away most of the colors of the spectrum. If you'd forgotten what natural colors look like, are equally as ready for this winter to go on its monochrome way, or would just like to take a few minutes to see the flowers, I've got just the collection of colorful images for you, fresh cropped from this year's Smith College Bulb Show.

'Untold Stories & Native Voices'
Works by Peter McLean, Nayana Glazier, Courtney M Leonard & Dan Loudfoot.
April 1 - 30, 2008

Nashawannuck Gallery, which draws its name from our country's indigenous people, means "valley of the little river." The gallery will give voice to the untold stories of our native people.

Dan Loudfoot (Pequot tribe) documents in photographs a performance meant to evoke his sense of being set adrift from his roots. His photographs show him with the words, "I lost my language, I lost my tribe," taped across his month as he stands at a phone booth on the streets of New York City. Dan will also install an audience-participation piece so that gallery visitors can pretend to be American Natives.

In Conjunction with the 'Untold Stories and Native Voices,' Putumayo Music has contributed door prizes of its international music collection.

Featured music at this event will be Putumayo's 'Native American Odyssey.' Most of the music on this collection reflects the way in which indigenous peoples incorporate the music around them from the predominant culture and, by blending in elements of their tradition, make it their own. The main goal of this compilation, as with all Putumayo World Music recordings, is to present a selection of great music which will hopefully entertain, surprise, and inspire you to explore even further.

Nashawannuck Gallery, which draws its name from our country's indigenous people, means "valley of the little river." The gallery will give voice to the untold stories of our native people.

Peter McLean, the only non-Native American in this exhibit, has given voice to their cause by illustrating in large-scale charcoal drawings the lost tales and crimes against indigenous people. He was amazed how the 1637 Pequot massacre in Mystic, CT, where 300 - 400 inhabitants, mostly elders and children, was never mentioned in our early educational American History books.

Nashawannuck Gallery brings Peter's masterful drawings from his recent exhibition at Trinity College together with Dan, Courtney and Nayana artwork from their Native American exhibition at Brown University to for this insightful exhibit about Native American issues.

Fiber art with a twist as the Garden of Eden is recreated out of fiber art such as quilting, knitting and crouching. Trees grow out of trunks and branches knit in purl and leaves of splendor out of vintage sari materials. use of quilting and knitting in nontraditional ways is exciting and refreshing, in a world full of computer generated art and communication. The forms in this show are organic and hearkens back to the true Americana.

Matt Johnson will exhibit several of his forged steel sculptures during this month's Art Walk. Coinciding with Denis Luzuriaga's exhibit, so there is a lot going on at the Old Town Hall this month!

Here's Matt's statement: For me, the artmaking process is as much an endeavor of the body as it is one of the mind. Issue and imagery fade behind the event of the art coming-into-being. Manual manipulation at the threshold of achievability is the desirable working condition. No assistants, no excuses, no complaining...just real work accomplishing real tasks. All this eventually leading to a visual entity from which there might be gleaned some elevated perception or momentary amusement.

Luminous Glass Panels By Lynn Latimer On View At The Grubbs Gallery
Luminous glass panels by Lynn Latimer Event: Luminous glass panels by Lynn Latimer

End Date: Wednesday April 30th, 2008
Location Name: The Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Center at the Williston Northampton School

City, ST: Easthampton, MA

The Williston Northampton School presents "Fused Glasswork," by Lynn Latimer on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery April 1 - April 30, 2008. An artist’s reception will be held in the gallery on April 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Easthampton artist Lynn Latimer has been creating meticulous and luminous works in glass for 32 years. Inspired by the colorful works of painters Paul Klee and Pierre Bonnard, Latimer fuses multiple layers of rich colors that overlap and create rhythmic patterns. Several of the glass colors "strike" when heated, yielding a delicate fine brown contrasting line where the pieces touch. This subtle shift in color and line is an invitation for the viewer to study the freestanding fused glass panels up-close, and follow where edges press into one another and shift colors.

A native of Ohio, she opened Latimer Glass Studio in 1976 shortly after earning her B.F.A. from RISD. Her work has shown in selected galleries and craft shows throughout the east coast including at ACC Baltimore, MD, and the Paradise City Art Festival in Northampton, MA. See a www.latimerglass.com for a gallery of her work.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online at www.williston.com.

The first in a series of three site specific audio/video installations. A collaborative project that uses projected moving and still images and sound. Supported in part by the Easthampton Cultural Council. RAINDATE: Saturday May 10th. Projection begins as soon as the sun goes down.

This AV project attempts to listen to the intersections of the footsteps from the past, the footsteps of now and perhaps the footsteps to come.

The steps provide the entrance and exit, a transitional space that marks a time before and time after an event occurs or a purpose is realized. The multiple functions that Town Hall has provided over the years are varied.

Steps are a portal to community, to acceptance, to futures, to legal processes that effect identity and a sense of citizenship.

The sound of footsteps on granite stairs indicates something about the building that is being entered or exited. Granite is important. The building is a location that houses offices for official business - where one enters and experiences an identity shift from Machine Worker, Builder, Performer, Farmer, Mother, Salesperson to Citizen of the Municipality of Easthampton. The building is about what goes on inside and individuals take back to the community what happens inside the building.

To Marcia Reed

And what bold world is this?
Yellow light, bright, punctures a maroon heaven
Producing plums, purples and pinks,
Oranges and greens;
Open ocean boils below
Rising and falling.
Air on water. Sky on sea.
No more?
and yet,
Emotion.
Not sea, not sky, not setting sun
But beyond.
See the soul in the atmosphere
Feel the fire in the clouds
Sense the spirit in the waves;
Ponder the power in a moment of beauty -
Captured.
The infinite intensity of nature, of god, of oursleves -
Revealed
All that is,
And,
All that could be.

The Connecticut Valley is home to a wide range of cartoonists; comic-book and comic-strip artists, writers, and publishers; and scholars commenting on cartoons and comics. This group exhibition shows the narrative art of cartoon and cartoon-related artists in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Western Massachusetts.

“Accounts of Events” aims to present a number of varied works which ask us to consider the ways in which we understand both narrative and reading. We are taught to associate words and pictures, but what happens when such things move out of the realm of how we're taught to consider comics and into a more explicit narrative structure? How does this act shift what we understand about 'reading' and about 'narrative'?

“Accounts of Events” is a group show, exhibiting at Greenfield Community College Downtown Center in April and May. Participants include Greenfield illustrator Sarah Adam, Recorder editorial cartoonist E. J. Barnes, humorous glass painter Helena Dooley, "Looking for a Face Like Mine" author Prof. William H. Foster III, '60s underground cartoonist Gary Hallgren, "Dr. Birdley" writer and artist Nevin Katz, Nickelodeon Magazine illustrator Mark Martin, "Pop Culture's Kids" creator Mark Stacy, Trees & Hills Comics Group co-founder Colin Tedford, and autobiographical comix artist Anne Thalheimer.

The works of Christin Couture and William Hosie might appear widely divergent:
She paints eerily telling portraits of infants and children inspired by Victorian photography (consider Edward Gorey crossed with Balthus), while he makes sprawling hybrid constructs from humble materials that can fill large spaces and appear like a surrealistic playground in miniature. In TOYz n' TOTz they find common ground in emotional terrain.....the range and resonance of human nature as evidenced by childhood's drama with toys. They seek to convey raw emotion in a formal context. We used to play with toys and now they play with us.

Couture and Hosie live and work in Shelburne Falls, and New York City.
See more of their work at www.redtidebluefire.com

(Note: The exhibition Toyz n’ Totz was originally shown at Springfield College in September 2001, but had the misfortune of opening two days before 9/11)

Sunday Vernissage on April 6 from 4 - 6pm will feature live music and absinthe punch for the delicate.

Three Accomplished Potters Present Their Work
Porcelain now - The Alfred Connection Artist: Albion Stafford, Andy Shaw, Kristen Kieffer

The three potters in this exhibit, all educated at Alfred University, have different reasons for their choice of this difficult and unforgiving material.
Whatever the reason for its use, these three potters have created extraordinary work from this beautiful and demanding material.

Andy Shaw
I design opportunities for the homeowner to add color to the porcelain and to incorporate it actively with other objects currently in the home. These purposefully designed thematic openings promote substantial connections between the pottery and its audience by drawing out practical and aesthetic utility within an advocacy for creative living.

Kristen Kieffer
My work aligns itself with the detail, sophistication and beauty of a bygone era, though my desire is to evoke an air of 21st century extravagance. Within the parameters of the ceramic vessel, I am interested in investigating line, form and texture. Form is my primary interest as an object-maker, followed by ornamentation and function.

Albion Stafford
My work is focused on an investigation into the ways in which we know, respond to, and are affected by our environments. The rapid proliferation of technology and modes of architecture evident in our landscape today signify change relative to the preexisting environment.I urge the viewer to see in my work a representation of our landscapes that investigate the nature of the balance between nature and construct, disarray and structure.
