DOROTHY OSTERMAN
Dorothy Osterman has been exploring the medium of gouache paint since 1961. She writes of her work in a recent statement:
With my new series of gouache paintings I have become more of an observer, watching and taking my direction from the flow and action of the water and paint on white paper.

HELENA DOOLEY -- Dieting: You want fries with that?
Helena Dooley's newest work is a collection of dieting facts displayed on glass, canvas and paper. There are more facts than one would have thought possible! For example: Talk actually generates calories. A complex chart reveals which conversations create the greatest number of calories per minute. Basically, Dooley said, Loose lips, fat hips!¯ Dooley did extensive work on this subject in a gym class where she noted that those who chatted during exercise actually gained large amounts of weight! Also included are several revealing food pyramids that explain everything about not only weight and nutrition but also character. She writes in her statement,

"I've always suspected that food was an important factor in weight gain but attention to the subject of chatting has opened up a whole new world of weight-gain worry."¯

A ground-breaking, medically important section of the show covers some of the more alarming side effects of diet fare: such as bezoars, which are indigestible masses of fiber "much like hairballs in cats" but caused by over-consumption of celery.

ALICIA HUNSICKER –In "Between The Darkness and The Light" Hunsicker presents a new body of oil paintings and sculptures built from organic materials including bone, eggs, and branches.

Hunsicker's work is self-reflective. Her work explores the dualities of existence, particularly the integration between the shadow and light.

Hunsicker of Leyden, was the founder and director of the former, Gallery 267, in Greenfield.

DEBORAH GARNER - A Solo exhibition of new works on paper Imagery is sourced from the realm of dreams and personal excursions in the nocturnal stream of consciousness,

A lifelong student of world culture, dealer in tribal and folk art, and independent researcher in cross-cultural symbolism, Garner's travels in the physical world often re-emerge as "almost" familiar settings in the dream world.

The resulting images produce what the artist likes to call "postcards from the edge of consciousness".

LAURA "LOLA" BALTZELL - Baltzell's new exhibit is an exploration in mixed media collage. Baltzell has previously worked primarily with oils which lends themselves to the multiple transparent layers that make up her surfaces. That technique is extended into her new collage work, to which she adds ephemera, both text and images.

Laura "Lola" Baltzell is a long-term yogini who started her yoga life in 1993. She currently teaches prenatal yoga. She is a self-taught artist. For her, art-making and yoga are intertwined and inform one an other other.

Luminous Glass Panels By Lynn Latimer On View At The Grubbs Gallery
Luminous glass panels by Lynn Latimer Event: Luminous glass panels by Lynn Latimer
Start Date: Tuesday April 1st, 2008
Reception: Sunday April 13th, 2008 @ 2:00 PM
End Date: Wednesday April 30th, 2008
Location Name: The Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Center at the Williston Northampton School
Address: 19 Payson Avenue
City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Website: www.williston.com
Fee: 0
The Williston Northampton School presents "Fused Glasswork," by Lynn Latimer on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery April 1 - April 30, 2008. An artist’s reception will be held in the gallery on April 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Easthampton artist Lynn Latimer has been creating meticulous and luminous works in glass for 32 years. Inspired by the colorful works of painters Paul Klee and Pierre Bonnard, Latimer fuses multiple layers of rich colors that overlap and create rhythmic patterns. Several of the glass colors "strike" when heated, yielding a delicate fine brown contrasting line where the pieces touch. This subtle shift in color and line is an invitation for the viewer to study the freestanding fused glass panels up-close, and follow where edges press into one another and shift colors.

A native of Ohio, she opened Latimer Glass Studio in 1976 shortly after earning her B.F.A. from RISD. Her work has shown in selected galleries and craft shows throughout the east coast including at ACC Baltimore, MD, and the Paradise City Art Festival in Northampton, MA. See a www.latimerglass.com for a gallery of her work.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online at www.williston.com.

To Marcia Reed

And what bold world is this?
Yellow light, bright, punctures a maroon heaven
Producing plums, purples and pinks,
Oranges and greens;
Open ocean boils below
Rising and falling.
Air on water. Sky on sea.
No more?
and yet,
Emotion.
Not sea, not sky, not setting sun
But beyond.
See the soul in the atmosphere
Feel the fire in the clouds
Sense the spirit in the waves;
Ponder the power in a moment of beauty -
Captured.
The infinite intensity of nature, of god, of oursleves -
Revealed
All that is,
And,
All that could be.

Then we go to the Nieman Foundation’s Conference on Narrative Journalism. We talk with broadcast and print journalist John Hockenberry about interactive media, BU journalism department chair Louis Ureneck about memoir, and Nieman narrative program director Connie Hale about what “narrative journalism” is all about.

The works of Christin Couture and William Hosie might appear widely divergent:
She paints eerily telling portraits of infants and children inspired by Victorian photography (consider Edward Gorey crossed with Balthus), while he makes sprawling hybrid constructs from humble materials that can fill large spaces and appear like a surrealistic playground in miniature. In TOYz n' TOTz they find common ground in emotional terrain.....the range and resonance of human nature as evidenced by childhood's drama with toys. They seek to convey raw emotion in a formal context. We used to play with toys and now they play with us.

Couture and Hosie live and work in Shelburne Falls, and New York City.
See more of their work at www.redtidebluefire.com

(Note: The exhibition Toyz n’ Totz was originally shown at Springfield College in September 2001, but had the misfortune of opening two days before 9/11)

Three Accomplished Potters Present Their Work

The three potters in this exhibit, all educated at Alfred University, have different reasons for their choice of this difficult and unforgiving material.
Whatever the reason for its use, these three potters have created extraordinary work from this beautiful and demanding material.

Andy Shaw
I design opportunities for the homeowner to add color to the porcelain and to incorporate it actively with other objects currently in the home. These purposefully designed thematic openings promote substantial connections between the pottery and its audience by drawing out practical and aesthetic utility within an advocacy for creative living.

Kristen Kieffer
My work aligns itself with the detail, sophistication and beauty of a bygone era, though my desire is to evoke an air of 21st century extravagance. Within the parameters of the ceramic vessel, I am interested in investigating line, form and texture. Form is my primary interest as an object-maker, followed by ornamentation and function.

Albion Stafford
My work is focused on an investigation into the ways in which we know, respond to, and are affected by our environments. The rapid proliferation of technology and modes of architecture evident in our landscape today signify change relative to the preexisting environment.I urge the viewer to see in my work a representation of our landscapes that investigate the nature of the balance between nature and construct, disarray and structure.

No other local venue has committed to honoring women with annual opportunities to be seen an heard. This year's theme is Environmental Portraiture. "An environmental portrait supplies enough details with props and choice of background to share with and present to the viewer something about the lifestyle of the person. In an environmental portrait, the subject is photographed at home, at the office, or on location, whichever best portrays the person's story. Far from the posed safe studio portrait with a seamless background, an environmental portrait positions the subject amid everyday objects of her life." The subject may live anywhere in the world.

The Gallery host Artist Gallery Talks for Sunday afternoons, March 9, 16, (closed Easter March 22), 29 at 3 pm. One of the highlights of the year...the community comes to listen to the stories: those of the artist and those of the subject portrayed in the image. Discussion follow and there have been wonderful friendships formed during these receptions, The Gallery is dedicated to artists telling their story...this month artists are telling her-story!

Each of the venues that participate in the Walk independently select the artist or performer to feature. Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.

You can submit an "Artist Proposal" online by visiting www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and following the "Call for Artists" link at the bottom of the page. Once you have subscribed to the newsletter and confirmed your subscription, you can submit your proposal.

The process is a 3-page form with a series of questions: types of venues interested in, available dates, number of pieces proposed or length of performance, etc. Your answers form the proposal which is then made available to each of the venues. The venues make the selections. Your proposal is available to them for up to one year.

There are no fees to submit or participate. All Art Walk-related events are non-paid opportunities.

Can You Spare A Dime?
Sponsoring Group Name: The Nave Gallery, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church
Show Name: Turn on a Dime
Submission Due Date: Tuesday April 1st, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.artsomerville.org
City, ST: Somerville, MA
We seek installation and 2D artists whose work includes and/or addresses the matter of pocket change. For this fundraising exhibit to celebrate its 4th birthday, The Nave Gallery is hosting a show built around the adventure of coins.

If a dime can be in your pocket today and in California tomorrow, who can imagine where else it has been, what it has seen, and what adventures it has had?

We especially seek installation artists to create environments to interact with a conveyor belt being constructed on which gallery visitors will be asked to deposit their spare change. We ask that the work of each artist take the change through their imagined travels, each piece creatively built around, interacting, or relating to the experience of the loose money. The use of mechanical and or/interactive pieces is encouraged; however, all media are accepted, including video and animation.

Please submit a sketch of the environment you envision, proposed dimensions, and 150 words describing the work and why it fits into the "Turn On A Dime" theme. Also include: a resume, statement, and up to 5 images (slides or JPEGs on CD with accompanying image list), and an SASE if you would like your materials returned to: The Nave Gallery, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powderhouse Blvd, Somerville, MA 02144

The exhibition will be held at the Nave Gallery, in Somerville, MA, from May 2-25, 2008 and will be up during Somerville Open Studios.
