| Sign Language | | The signs are everywhere; signs of recession, signs of family owned businesses working harder and harder to survive.
The controversy in Easthampton about signs, banners and balloons comes at an awkward time. After years of such promotional tools drawing no attention from inspectors, reinvigorated enforcement is cracking down on the signs small businesses typically use to promote themselves. It affects artists too, since most local artists sell their creations in these stores and less traffic means fewer sales. You can read more about the back-and-forth tussle here and then by clicking on the "Comments" link to view the postings. There's a general community meeting about this topic on Thursday, March 20th, at 4:30 PM at the Easthampton Municipal Building Room, 50 Payson Avenue, 3rd Floor. Those interested in the topic are invited, nay encouraged, to attend.
There are other signs too; signs of outreach. I stumbled upon a great little site at www.FreeRice.com that combines word quizzes with food donation. It's a free site that donates 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program each time you correctly guess the definition of a word. Those little grains of rice add up, too. Just yesterday some 197,335,880 grains were donated as a result of the word quizzes. Check it out. It's surprising addictive (and humbling). Who knew rice could be addictive?

Three member artists are showing prints exploring various interpretations of the natural world. Neil Brigham, an illustrator by profession is exhibiting beautifully crafted relief prints of fish, frogs, birds and woodland animals. Tracy Ducasse's relief prints emphasize the intricate patterning found in the natural world. Kate Jenkin's expressive monotypes are infused with impressionist color. Each artist brings a unique vision of the outdoors into our gallery.
Zea Mays Printmaking is a studio, workshop, educational facility and research center dedicated to new approaches in printmaking. We focus on safer and non-toxic alternatives to printmaking for the health of artists and the environment. Our gallery is unique in that we exhibit work unframed so that visitors can truly see the ink on the paper. |

| A Tea House was purchased in New York for Wistariahurst by Belle Skinner, and was assembled at the end of the rose garden. It was surrounded by an oriental style garden with tree peony and cedar and mulberry trees. The Tea House remained on the grounds of Wistariahurst until the late 1970s when it was dismantled and placed in storage. Garden Historian and Landscape Designer Mary Parker will speak about the Tea House at Wistariahurst and also illustrate the differences between Chinese and Japanese estate gardens in20thcentury North America |

Jen Harmon is interested in dance that subverts traditional notions of form and content. "I want art that's unexplainable, art that's poetic or sublingual. I want to experience fleeting tragedies, underlying devotion, instant catastrophe and momentary delight in the deeply physical." The Out of Towners is a shared evening of contemporary performance curated by Harmon that offers the audience just that kind of revealing, ground-breaking work.
The evening will include works by Layard Thompson, Jen Rosenblit, Melinda Buckwalter and Elizabeth Ward. Layard Thompson has spent the last three years adapting solos by choreographer Deborah Hay. In "News," we are invited to deepen our relationship to spacetime through an installation of metronomes, flash photography, and Hay's choreography.
Jen Rosenblit offers a new duet with live accordion and percussion music. Jen graduated from Hampshire College, where her research into the history of the "unconventional" or larger dancing body in modern dance led her to an abstract critique on heaviness in contemporary choreography.
Melinda Buckwalter and the "Sometimes Collective" investigates Indian goddesses, The Mahavidyas, and their contemporary western manifestations by looking at clothes, movement, and place. The work gives homage to these fearsome female energies.

Images in Rinklin's work are derived from Baroque painting and architecture, cellular biology, natural history, illustration, cosmological imagery and decorative patterns which are scanned and manipulated digitally. She incorporates digital media into large scale installations of transparent Duraclear prints and wall painting to create a contemporary impression of Barogue space. |

No other local venue has committed to honoring women with annual opportunities to be seen an heard. This year's theme is Environmental Portraiture. "An environmental portrait supplies enough details with props and choice of background to share with and present to the viewer something about the lifestyle of the person. In an environmental portrait, the subject is photographed at home, at the office, or on location, whichever best portrays the person's story. Far from the posed safe studio portrait with a seamless background, an environmental portrait positions the subject amid everyday objects of her life." The subject may live anywhere in the world.
The Gallery host Artist Gallery Talks for Sunday afternoons, March 9, 16, (closed Easter March 22), 29 at 3 pm. One of the highlights of the year...the community comes to listen to the stories: those of the artist and those of the subject portrayed in the image. Art Walk Easthampton has an open call for visual, music and performance artists who would like to showcase their talents during the monthly Art Walk. Each of the venues that participate in the Walk independently select the artist or performer to feature. Visual shows typically last 3-4 weeks while performance and music are for the evening of the event.
You can submit an "Artist Proposal" online by visiting www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and following the "Call for Artists" link at the bottom of the page. Once you have subscribed to the newsletter and confirmed your subscription, you can submit your proposal.
The process is a 3-page form with a series of questions: types of venues interested in, available dates, number of pieces proposed or length of performance, etc. Your answers form the proposal which is then made available to each of the venues. The venues make the selections. Your proposal is available to them for up to one year.
There are no fees to submit or participate. All Art Walk-related events are non-paid opportunities. |

"Environment"
The Eagle Hill School Cultural Center, opening in Fall 2008, is home to Gallery 102 and several additional exhibit zones. Eagle Hill School is a private co-educational college preparatory boarding school for students with learning disabilities in grades 8 – 12. The galleries will be open to the campus community and the public daily.
The first exhibit season's theme will be "Environment". As we take possession of our new educational/arts environment, how will these new spaces touch us? How will our actions define these spaces? Beyond the walls of the EHS Cultural Center, what effects do environment have on our perceptions and decisions? What effects do our perceptions and decisions have on environment? What does environment look like? How do our environments shape and define us?
For the several 2008 - 2009 exhibit season opportunities, we seek submissions that interpret "Environment" in a wide variety of media: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, paper, textile, and installation. Because we are an educational institution, all accepted artists must be willing to interact with our students and faculty through participation in a mutually agreed upon activity.

2. Images of 6 or more work examples that relate to "Environment", presented in jpeg format with a detailed image list.

The Brick House Community Resource Center of Turners Falls is sponsoring its fourth annual Great Falls Art Fest on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, 2008 on the beautiful grounds of the Great Falls Discovery Center (GFDC) on Avenue A, in Turners Falls, MA (just off Route 2 and over the Gill-Montague Bridge). Along with a myriad of artists, the Great Falls Art Fest also offers two full days of live local music, fun children's activities, and delicious local cuisine. Proceeds from this event will benefit the community-based programs at The Brick House.
The Great Falls Art Fest is a juried festival, which ensures a good balance and wide variety of arts and crafts. The jurying process, which began February 25th, will continue with sessions on March 10th, March 24th, April 14th, and May 5th. In addition to the lovely level grounds at the GFDC, this year's fest is offering artists the opportunity to set up their booths under a large tent or their own booth-size tents.

LCA Sculpture Trail Summer 2008
For June - Mid-October, 2008
LCA is a non-profit craft and art organization located five miles north of Amherst, MA. Our primary activities are providing affordable studio space for crafts and art workers, and sponsoring exhibitions. The Sculpture Trail is a new project. It is located on three acres of rolling, partially wooded land behind the LCA building at 13 Montague Rd. in Leverett. (map available)
LCA seeks proposals/submissions from artists who make outdoor sculpture (site- specific, abstract, figurative). Submissions are limited to one per artist. They must include the following:
1. A written description and visual image (drawing, photograph or slide) of the work, with information on materials and size.
2. Description of a method of anchoring the work in place
3. Five to ten slides of the artist's current work
4. A concise resume
5. Artists must visit the Sculpture Trail (maps available) before completing their submission and identify in their proposal several preferred sites for the exhibition of
their work.
The LCA Sculpture Trail Committee will jury the proposals. Artists who are selected will be assigned one of the 10 exhibition sites and are responsible for installation and removal of their works.
Submissions must be received by April 5, 2008.

The Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden is truly a place where “Art and Nature Meet.” The three indoor gallery rooms carry regional and nationally known artists, with a fine selection of paintings, indoor sculpture, hand-made jewelry, pottery, art glass, and mobiles. The eclectic collection meets everyone’s taste from contemporary to realism, from the serious to the whimsical.
The ever changing outdoor sculpture is arranged among perennial gardens, surrounded by woods, fields, and a pond. Sit back in a lawn chair, and watch the wild life go marching across the field. |

We seek installation and 2D artists whose work includes and/or addresses the matter of pocket change. For this fundraising exhibit to celebrate its 4th birthday, The Nave Gallery is hosting a show built around the adventure of coins.
If a dime can be in your pocket today and in California tomorrow, who can imagine where else it has been, what it has seen, and what adventures it has had?
We especially seek installation artists to create environments to interact with a conveyor belt being constructed on which gallery visitors will be asked to deposit their spare change. We ask that the work of each artist take the change through their imagined travels, each piece creatively built around, interacting, or relating to the experience of the loose money. The use of mechanical and or/interactive pieces is encouraged; however, all media are accepted, including video and animation.
Please submit a sketch of the environment you envision, proposed dimensions, and 150 words describing the work and why it fits into the "Turn On A Dime" theme. Also include: a resume, statement, and up to 5 images (slides or JPEGs on CD with accompanying image list), and an SASE if you would like your materials returned to: The Nave Gallery, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powderhouse Blvd, Somerville, MA 02144

This workshop will demonstrate several different techniques for jump-starting your creativity and freeing yourself from the blocks and obstacles that get in the way of your art-making. It is based on the exercises in Dean's new book by the same name that is due out in April. This is a hands-on workshop open to all levels of artistic experience and technical ability. Each participant should bring some of their own simple materials such as charcoal, pencils, brushes and water-based paints. Paper and some basic drawing and painting materials will be provided free of charge.

Too often we leap to the computer before the concept is clear. In this series of two workshops, we will cover how to design a page (or multiple pages) BEFORE we go to Photoshop or Illustrator. We'll step back and decide what the piece needs to be. How big? What shape? Should it be color or black and white? What typeface is best? Is the message (and unique selling position) clear? We'll determine how to create the strongest visual communication based on budget and purpose. Margot, who has taught advertising and design at both Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts in NYC, notes that students do NOT need to be experienced designers.

Have you always wanted to draw but don't know how to begin? Are you convinced you can't be taught? Have you been discouraged from learning to draw? Then this workshop is for you. The fundamentals of drawing will be taught in an atmosphere of encouragement and individual attention. The goals of the class are twofold. First, develop confidence in your ability to learn to draw. Second, develop the foundation needed to draw realistically. An added benefit will be relaxation and stress reduction. Although the learning of these skills can be exacting, treating yourself to the time and space to learn this wonderful art is a gift. This series of classes will consist of creating two finished paintings on paper along with several exercises and experiments. It is designed for beginners and anyone who is interested in acquiring new techniques and skills. We will be using large photographs that will be supplied and will learn about the various ways of working-- from carefully penciled-in, detailed representation to freehand painting using no technical aides. Learning about color and composition will be taught as the painting progresses. Since the emphasis is on "learning by doing", expect to jump in with paint immediately. Smalti is one of the oldest and most original materials of mosaic art. This thick, exquisite glass tile holds light the way no other material can. Is is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Venice, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down through the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artist many possibilities to achive dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day intensive workshop, we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6"x6" mosaic panel. Design, color and composition will also be covered. The class includes tools and a beautiful selection of Orsoni Italian smalti. This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced mosaicists who have never worked with smalti.

| Your new SLR Digital Camera is an investment for your creative future. Use it well and it will continue to capture exciting nature images. This course is designed for us to learn the fundamentals of digital photography with nature as our subject matter. Walking through the woods carrying your digital SLR, learn to see nature from a different perspective through different lens choices. Demonstrations and hands-on-instructions will be given to explore ISO settings, white balance, focus control, digital file formats, and image storage. Learn how exposure controls can create mood and add drama to our images. We will compare traditional film versus digital images and equipment. The course also covers loading and working with digital camera software on a computer, importing images, and working on your home printer. Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 will be demonstrated to change color cast, alter saturation, and apply the unsharp mask to digital images.
Resize, crop, and batch process tools will be explored also. It is not necessary to own a digital camera to take this course; however, if you have one, please bring it along with your camera's manual. We will take advantage of the late evening light and spend some time outside. Assignments will be given and informally critiqued with warmth and respect. |
