Artists Demonstrate Encaustic Painting
Encaustic painting demonstration Artist: Deborah Kruger, Ann Taylor Gibson, Nancy Natale
Event: Encaustic painting demonstration

End Date: Saturday March 15th, 2008
Location Name: Nashawannuck Gallery
Address: 40 Cottage Street

In conjunction with the show "SIX IN WAX: brought together by the medium of encaustic", artists will demonstrate how encaustic paint is used and show techniques applied in paintings being exhibited. Encaustic, a mixture of beeswax, pigment and resin, is a painting medium that has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently after being abandoned as too difficult to use when compared to oil and acrylic paint. Since encaustic must be melted and applied to a panel in molten form, its use requires familiarity with various techniques and methods which will be demonstrated by the artists. Encaustic is an ancient medium known historically for its use on the Egyptian Faiyum mummy portraits of late 1st century B.C., which have retained their brilliant colors for 2000 years. In modern times, some well-known artists used encaustic, such as Jasper Johns, for example, who revived encaustic for use in his target paintings. Come and see the brilliant, luminescent veils of color and exciting surface qualities that can be achieved only with encaustic, and learn how artists safely handle encaustic in a molten state.

The Lathrop Art Committee welcomes Marty Klein, well-known Easthampton photographer, for our March exhibit. He derives his inspiration from a lifelong love and appreciation of the natural world. During the past 18 months Klein has been refining a photographic technique which he calls "scanography". He collects objects from nature, and then places them on his flatbed scanner. The images thereby produced are manipulated and processed through his digital darkroom. They are then printed on fine art rag paper. The net result is a body of original and engaging art work. In this way he celebrates our "Green World". His photographic exhibit will be on display for the month of March from 9-4 daily. We invite you to come meet Marty Klein on Sunday, March 2, from 4-5 pm during his opening reception.

The exhibit is comprised of older and more recent sculptures, drawings and two new works in slate being created at the college for the first time.

"Blank Slate/Clean Slate is about old doings and new beginnings, forks in the road and second chances. It is about rethinking what we have done and choosing to do it another way. Or, in fact, doing something else entirely," de Christopher said. "The root of this show is about change, and as with most of what I do, it is very personal."

Her paintings reveal time spent outdoors observing, and translating those observations into a pictorial language showing a love of color, movement and the physicality of paint.

City, ST: Southampton,

No other local venue has committed to honoring women with annual opportunities to be seen an heard. This year's theme is Environmental Portraiture. "An environmental portrait supplies enough details with props and choice of background to share with and present to the viewer something about the lifestyle of the person. In an environmental portrait, the subject is photographed at home, at the office, or on location, whichever best portrays the person's story. Far from the posed safe studio portrait with a seamless background, an environmental portrait positions the subject amid everyday objects of her life." The subject may live anywhere in the world.

The Gallery host Artist Gallery Talks for Sunday afternoons, March 9, 16, (closed Easter March 22), 29 at 3 pm. One of the highlights of the year...the community comes to listen to the stories: those of the artist and those of the subject portrayed in the image. Discussion follow and there have been wonderful friendships formed during these receptions, The Gallery is dedicated to artists telling their story...this month artists are telling her-story!

and an opportunity to meet, greet and introduce yourself to artists specializing in photography. The Gallery and Learning Center believe we need to tell our stories to continue the healing process. Society and life often position artists in a situation where there is no voice. This is countered by providing a venue for several years now, inviting the community to these Sunday afternoon Gallery Talks. The Talks have confirmed our identity, motivated us and have given us an insight into the artist's story...with no two stories being alike! Photographer or not, these Talks are targeted those who care to listen!

Can You Spare A Dime?
Sponsoring Group Name: The Nave Gallery, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church
Show Name: Turn on a Dime
Submission Due Date: Tuesday April 1st, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.artsomerville.org
City, ST: Somerville, MA
We seek installation and 2D artists whose work includes and/or addresses the matter of pocket change. For this fundraising exhibit to celebrate its 4th birthday, The Nave Gallery is hosting a show built around the adventure of coins.

If a dime can be in your pocket today and in California tomorrow, who can imagine where else it has been, what it has seen, and what adventures it has had?

We especially seek installation artists to create environments to interact with a conveyor belt being constructed on which gallery visitors will be asked to deposit their spare change. We ask that the work of each artist take the change through their imagined travels, each piece creatively built around, interacting, or relating to the experience of the loose money. The use of mechanical and or/interactive pieces is encouraged; however, all media are accepted, including video and animation.

Too often we leap to the computer before the concept is clear. In this series of two workshops, we will cover how to design a page (or multiple pages) BEFORE we go to Photoshop or Illustrator. We'll step back and decide what the piece needs to be. How big? What shape? Should it be color or black and white? What typeface is best? Is the message (and unique selling position) clear? We'll determine how to create the strongest visual communication based on budget and purpose. Margot, who has taught advertising and design at both Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts in NYC, notes that students do NOT need to be experienced designers.

Thursday evenings for 2 weeks, April 3 and April 10, 6:30-9pm. $85

The fundamentals of drawing will be taught in an atmosphere of encouragement and individual attention. The goals of the class are twofold. First, develop confidence in your ability to learn to draw. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artist many possibilities to achive dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day intensive workshop, we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6"x6" mosaic panel.
