| Flight of the PrimaCaucus | | Regular readers of this column know that I grew up in Texas. My folks were active in Democratic politics and, at the time, the state was largely Democrat. My parents still live there even though the politics have changed. The state is holding its primary vote today and among Democrats it consists of a Primary followed by a Caucus. Its pet name is the PrimaCaucus. For some reason that goofy term sticks in my head like an unwanted jingle, playing over and over, PrimaCaucus, PrimaCaucus, PrimaCaucus. (See, now it's in your head too.) The only way I have been able to cope with the cruel repetition is to develop its back-story which I now share with you in an effort to purge myself of it.
This is the story of the Texas PrimaCaucus, as conjured by me...
The Texas PrimaCaucus is a large, flightless, featherless bird. It used to roam the coast, hills, plains and piney woods of Texas in large numbers, especially during the 60s and 70s. Herds of it could be lured into the open by playing a Willie Nelson song from the open window of a Ford pickup truck. It's two-stepping ways classified it in the party animal genome. Sadly, climate changes due to bombastic righteousness have culled its numbers significantly. Now one can only find the PrimaCaucus in and around Austin at night. The PrimaCaucus may go days without seeing another of its kind and it is very easily spooked. Its only defensive technique is illusionary. So rare are sightings nowadays that actually spotting one causes the viewer to be temporary stunned. Once the observer has recovered and reached for his shotgun, the PrimaCaucus is long gone, leaving only small reindeer-like tracks and causing one to wonder if it was only a rumor, like the existence of Santa Clau
s or Sissy Farenthold.
Many climatologists hope the PrimaCaucus will return, although there are no plans by the government to protect the species. Long live the PrimaCaucus.
And now for some art news... |

| As a child, I had and continue to have a great love of nature. I was fascinated by the vibrant colors of sunsets, flowers, sea and landscapes. My goal as an artist is to capture the very things that change quickly due to the season, weather or aging and present them to the viewer. I like to give each piece a bit of life and vitality by using pure and intensified colors. Often my art has been described as being therapeutic in the sense that it can uplift you. |

Elizabeth has been part of the One Cottage Street artist community in Easthampton, Massachusetts since 1985.
Traditionally her paintings have focused on the “domestic interior” and the intimate scenes of daily life. In her most recent paintings she has shifted her focus onto the “exterior landscape”. “My inspiration for this new body of works comes from my love of the American tonalist painters John Francis Murphy, Charles Warren Eaton and George Inness.”
On display will be giclee prints of some of these new landscapes as well as her familiar interiors. The giclee format is kept small, true to the original oil paintings. Unlike her original oil paintings these giclees are priced for the modest collector. |

| I am Terry Spier, designer and maker of fine, beaded jewelry. My beadwork – necklaces, bracelets, earrings and sets – are all created from my imagination and my belief that jewelry is art – to be worn, enjoyed and loved. Each piece that is created in my studio is handmade, individual and unique. Many pieces incorporate unusual, irreplaceable beads and findings from other countries. I pride myself in my one-of-a-kind creations and in also doing special pieces commissioned by buyers. My love of natural stone and color is represented by my use of jasper, turquoise, coral and amazonite, to name a few. Swarovski crystals are often used in my creations and add vibrant color and intensity. Sterling silver from Bali, Israel and Thailand complements the precious and semi-precious stones, ceramic beads and glass that come from many different cultures and continents. I only use professional grade supplies in my creations and each piece is certain to be
appreciated for years to come. |

In conjunction with the show "SIX IN WAX: brought together by the medium of encaustic", artists will demonstrate how encaustic paint is used and show techniques applied in paintings being exhibited. Encaustic, a mixture of beeswax, pigment and resin, is a painting medium that has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently after being abandoned as too difficult to use when compared to oil and acrylic paint. Since encaustic must be melted and applied to a panel in molten form, its use requires familiarity with various techniques and methods which will be demonstrated by the artists. Encaustic is an ancient medium known historically for its use on the Egyptian Faiyum mummy portraits of late 1st century B.C., which have retained their brilliant colors for 2000 years. In modern times, some well-known artists used encaustic, such as Jasper Johns, for example, who revived encaustic for use in his target paintings. Come and see the brilliant,
luminescent veils of color and exciting surface qualities that can be achieved only with encaustic, and learn how artists safely handle encaustic in a molten state.

| Doubt, A Parable By John Patrick Shanley |
Event: Doubt, A Parable Start Date: Friday March 7th, 2008 End Date: Sunday March 9th, 2008 Location Name: Williston Northampton School Address: 19 Payson Ave. City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website: PaulineLive.com Fee: $18-22 |
Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley: The year is 1964. The country is on the verge of revolution, the loss of innocence, upheaval in many of its institutions and the determination to do what's right at any cost. Set in a parochial school in the Bronx, Doubt addresses the battle of wills between the "old school" Sister Aloysius and the young, charismatic and more progressive Father Flynn. Their conflict goes beyond the question of whether Father Flynn has been sexually inappropriate with the only Black student in the school. It touches upon a multitude of complicated issues: the inequities in the hierarchy of the Church, issues of silence, faith, change, trust, protection, certainty, and doubt.
Playwright John Patrick Shanley says that the Final Act of this play takes place after the show, on the ride home or in a café as audience members heatedly debate what they believe is the truth in the play. In an age when issues are discussed in 10 second soundbites, Shanley challenges his audience to grapple with complexities. He says in the preface to his script:
"There's something silent under every person, under every play. There is something unsaid under any given society, as well...You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down on that feeling. We've got to learn to live with a full measure of uncertainty. There is no last word. That is the silence underneath the chatter of our time." |

Tim de Christopher's limestone sculptures have been on display at galleries throughout Massachusetts, including the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.
The exhibit is comprised of older and more recent sculptures, drawings and two new works in slate being created at the college for the first time.
"Blank Slate/Clean Slate is about old doings and new beginnings, forks in the road and second chances. It is about rethinking what we have done and choosing to do it another way. Or, in fact, doing something else entirely," de Christopher said. "The root of this show is about change, and as with most of what I do, it is very personal." |

Since the early '60s when he was an art student at Cornell (BFA '65), David Barten's compelling interest has been American folk sculpture of the nineteenth century. He has created sculptures of American historical figures, constructions and dioramas of rural scenes of New England. In 2005 he began to experiment with abstract designs composed of the tools that woodworkers used over the centuries to create homes, ships, barrels, wagons and other common objects. He has lived in western Massachusetts since 1977. "I've been a woodcarver since 1980 and a woodworker since 1987, but it was not until a few years ago that I began to look at old woodworking tools as more than practical objects. In studying especially the tools that had been handmade, I became aware that they were nearly perfect in design for the jobs they were intended to perform, and that their shapes were often quite beautiful.
"The tools in my sculptures date from the late seventeenth to the late nineteenth century and have been rejected by museum curators and collectors because they show the signs of long, hard use, and of long and often inappropriate storage. I set out to display these tools in sculptures that emphasize their form and reveal their inherent artistic qualities."

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, March 8, 1-4 PM
A faculty member with the title Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Bob Hallock is an experimental physicist and has been involved in photography for more than forty years. Since the early 1990's when he began to use his field camera, his work has been devoted primarily to black and white. He sees similarity between experimental physics and photography: each requires a good initial idea followed by meticulous attention to the execution of craft to reach satisfactory closure.
He has been engaged in photography for more than forty years with a concentration in the last decade on large-format and medium-format black and white photography using film and traditional darkroom techniques. He has studied with the well-known photographers and printers John Marcy, Ron Rosenstock, Bruce Barnbaum, Don Kirby and John Sexton. He is a member of three regional photographic organizations: Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists (charter member, and secretary), Western New England Large Format Photographers, and Photo-lunch.
Bob and his wife Norma have two married sons and live in Leverett, Massachusetts. |

| Heads 2 Hoops: The Art Of Megan E Labonte And Photography Of Derek Goodwin |
|
Artist: Megan E Labonte, Derek Goodwin Event: Heads 2 Hoops: The Art of Megan E LaBonte and Photography of Derek Goodwin Start Date: Tuesday March 4th, 2008 Reception: Thursday March 6th, 2008 @ 7:00 PM End Date: Friday April 4th, 2008 Location Name: The Green Bean Restaurant Address: 241 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Fee: 0 |
Between June 15th and July 15th, 2007 sassy artist Megan E LaBonte displayed 12 heads in 12 storefront windows in downtown Northampton, MA. The exhibit was called HEAD CASES and was sponsored by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council. The heads were inspired by Megan's favorite female archetypes, goddesses and artists.
Derek Goodwin has been supporting himself as a photographer in the Valley for over 8 years. He is known for his documentary-style event photography and his more intimate portraiture. He has also been quietly amassing a portfolio of abstract night-time photography and other strange and unique work.
The "Heads 2 Hoops" exhibit features Derek's images of Megan's heads in their respective windows. Derek's digital photographs of the heads creates a synergy of the two artistic visions; wonderful images bursting with vibrant colors and playful content.
Derek and Megan also have hula-hooping, performance artist alter-egos. They are known about town as Substance D and Hoopmaster Sass, respectively. While photographing the heads they would often take breaks to hula hoop and engage Northampton's night life. Derek would set up his tripod and remote shutter release to make self-portraits with hoops twirling around their hips and torsos. A smattering of these images round out the exhibit, along with some more recent photographs of Megan's own painted head.
From Heads 2 Hoops, a fantastical exhibit in a wonderful new space! We hope to see you there! |

No other local venue has committed to honoring women with annual opportunities to be seen an heard. This year's theme is Environmental Portraiture. "An environmental portrait supplies enough details with props and choice of background to share with and present to the viewer something about the lifestyle of the person. In an environmental portrait, the subject is photographed at home, at the office, or on location, whichever best portrays the person's story. Far from the posed safe studio portrait with a seamless background, an environmental portrait positions the subject amid everyday objects of her life." The subject may live anywhere in the world.
The Gallery host Artist Gallery Talks for Sunday afternoons, March 9, 16, (closed Easter March 22), 29 at 3 pm. One of the highlights of the year...the community comes to listen to the stories: those of the artist and those of the subject portrayed in the image. Discussion follow and there have been wonderful friendships formed during these receptions, The Gallery is dedicated to artists telling their story...this month artists are telling her-story! |

Society and life often position artists in a situation where there is no voice. This is countered by providing a venue for several years now, inviting the community to these Sunday afternoon Gallery Talks. The Talks have confirmed our identity, motivated us and have given us an insight into the artist's story...with no two stories being alike! Oil paint is one of the richest of all artist media. This class is for beginners and for those who are looking for a new perspective to further develop their painting skills. It is especially for people with experience in other media--watercolor, acrylic, etc.--who want to learn to paint in oil. We will cover all the technical fundamentals of painting mediums and methods of applying paint (under-painting, mixing, glazing, etc.). In the painting process, we will deal with composition and chiaroscuro, working on creating the deep, rich tones and sense of illumination that oil paintings are so well known for. We will work with both abstract and realistic subjects to develop skills, focusing on the ability to look at our work to see how it needs to be developed.

A sloper is a flat pattern which represents the three dimensional form. This powerful fitting and design tool can be used to alter commercially available patterns or as the basis for developing your own styles. Beginning with detailed body measurements, we will draft individual slopers specifically tailored to each student's unique body shape. From there we will construct a muslin sample garment to ensure a perfect fit. Some sewing will be required so students are encouraged to bring a sewing machine to class.
