My latest series of paintings and drawings are collectively titled Windows. Windows are openings that frame both the outside and inside world. The glass is a transparent curtain to the world stage, which has become a setting for the real, the unreal, and the surreal nature of my work. Windows are openings to vicarious adventure, the imaginative, flights of fantasy, invention, mystery, and contemplation. They are the object of daydreams and nightmares. There are two sides to windows: one side looks out, the other looks in; they, like art, are both private and public.
The eye is a window to both the external and internal world. The mind's eye gives form and meaning to our experiences. My windows are your windows to my vision and my experience.

The Collision Of Cultures Throughout Eastern Europe.

UNFOLDING IMAGES
Accordion Books by Laura Holland
Artist Statement
Intriguing juxtapositions emerge when the formerly elegant, often dilapidated, history-laden architecture of Eastern Europe crushes up against the hustle, rush, and bustle of life today. Sometimes these buildings reel out of the collision covered in graffiti and stencil art; other times they are lovingly restored or elegantly remodeled; still other times they are razed to the ground and replaced by a completely new structure. In the fragments of these old buildings, I look for the eloquent details that, piece by piece, combine to convey some vital sense of the larger scene.
To suggest my impression of cultures colliding, I layered photographs taken in East Berlin between 1987 and 2006, in a series of photomontages. Next, I bundled images of old and new buildings stretching along one street in Berlin, to make books with Japanese stab bindings. But neither format could effectively tell the story the way I saw it: as a progression. Accordion books, with the images unfolding across connected pages, gave me the structure I needed. Berlin, Prague, Presov, Kosice, Cluj, and other Eastern European cities provided the subject matter.
Circles, squares, right angles, and diagonal lines - these formal elements are important both in composing individual photographs and in creating integrated sequences. I use Adobe Photoshop to adjust color and light for a unified effect within each series, and I print with matte ink to enhance the depth of tonal values.

Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley: The year is 1964. The country is on the verge of revolution, the loss of innocence, upheaval in many of its institutions and the determination to do what's right at any cost. Set in a parochial school in the Bronx, Doubt addresses the battle of wills between the "old school" Sister Aloysius and the young, charismatic and more progressive Father Flynn. Their conflict goes beyond the question of whether Father Flynn has been sexually inappropriate with the only Black student in the school. It touches upon a multitude of complicated issues: the inequities in the hierarchy of the Church, issues of silence, faith, change, trust, protection, certainty, and doubt.
Playwright John Patrick Shanley says in the preface to his script:
"There's something silent under every person, under every play. There is something unsaid under any given society, as well...You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down on that feeling. We've got to learn to live with a full measure of uncertainty. There is no last word. That is the silence underneath the chatter of our time."
Doubt won the 2005 Pulitizer Prize and Tony Award for Drama.
"Well-written roles that crackle with intelligence and rhythm"
John Lahr, NEW YORKER

As a child, I had and continue to have a great love of nature. I was fascinated by the vibrant colors of sunsets, flowers, sea and landscapes. My goal as an artist is to capture the very things that change quickly due to the season, weather or aging and present them to the viewer. I like to give each piece a bit of life and vitality by using pure and intensified colors. Often my art has been described as being therapeutic in the sense that it can uplift you.

I am Terry Spier, designer and maker of fine, beaded jewelry. My beadwork – necklaces, bracelets, earrings and sets – are all created from my imagination and my belief that jewelry is art – to be worn, enjoyed and loved. Each piece that is created in my studio is handmade, individual and unique. Many pieces incorporate unusual, irreplaceable beads and findings from other countries. I pride myself in my one-of-a-kind creations and in also doing special pieces commissioned by buyers. My love of natural stone and color is represented by my use of jasper, turquoise, coral and amazonite, to name a few. Swarovski crystals are often used in my creations and add vibrant color and intensity. Sterling silver from Bali, Israel and Thailand complements the precious and semi-precious stones, ceramic beads and glass that come from many different cultures and continents. I only use professional grade supplies in my creations and each piece is certain to be
appreciated for years to come.

An Eyeful Of Flora....images From Nature
Artist:Marty Klein Event: An Eyeful of Flora...Images from Nature Start Date: Saturday March 1st, 2008 Reception: Sunday March 2nd, 2008 @ 4:00 PM End Date: Sunday March 30th, 2008 Location Name: Lathrop Community Art Gallery Address: 100 Bassett Brook Drive City, ST: Easthampton, MA Fee: n/a
The Lathrop Art Committee welcomes Marty Klein, well-known Easthampton photographer, for our March exhibit. He derives his inspiration from a lifelong love and appreciation of the natural world. During the past 18 months Klein has been refining a photographic technique which he calls "scanography". He collects objects from nature, and then places them on his flatbed scanner. The images thereby produced are manipulated and processed through his digital darkroom. They are then printed on fine art rag paper. The net result is a body of original and engaging art work. In this way he celebrates our "Green World". His photographic exhibit will be on display for the month of March from 9-4 daily. We invite you to come meet Marty Klein on Sunday, March 2, from 4-5 pm during his opening reception.
Artist:Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, Anne Farrow, Joel Lang, Jennifer Frank Event: Writers Voice with Francesca Rheannon on Radio Start Date: Thursday February 28th, 2008 Reception: Thursday February 28th, 2008 @ 8:00 AM End Date: Thursday February 28th, 2008 Location Name: 93.3FM WXOJ FM Valley Free Radio City, ST: Florence, MA Website:www.writersvoice.net
Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina about MR. AND MRS. PRINCE: How An Extraordinary Eighteenth-Century Family Moved Out of Slavery and Into Legend.
Abijah Prince was born into slavery in the early 17th century in Springfield, Massachusetts, but in middle age, he arranged his own freedom and married (and freed) the dynamic and eloquent Lucy Terry of the nearby town of Deerfield. Against incredible odds, the couple became property-owners and respectable members of the largely white community in which they lived. When author Gretchen Gerzina began to follow the legend of the Princes, she was astonished to find that her own ancestors were part of the story.
Also, we talk with Anne Farrow, Joel Lang and Jennifer Frank, authors of COMPLICITY: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery.
When we think of slavery, most of us think about the South. But as the authors of COMPLICITY demonstrate, the North was quite complicit in that "peculiar institution." Anne Farrow, Joel Lang, and Jenifer Frank are all journalists with the Hartford Courant. Culled from long-ignored documents and reports and bolstered by rarely seen photos, publications, maps, and period drawings COMPLICITY is a fascinating and sobering work that actually does what so many books pretend to do: shed light on America's past.

STUFF: An exhibition by seven artists, who are drawn together by their use of discarded objects and reclaimed materials. Materials are transformed from the diurnal, by the artists’ attraction to object, color, and texture; decay, ambiguity and possibility for reuse to create meaning - or a being - in a new context.
The show opens with with a reception on March 21 from 5-8 p.m. Live music will feature the Low Country Messiahs, a band that plays acoustic blues with instruments made from found objects.
Featured artists include: Candace Bradbury-Carlin, who uses mainly kitchen material that would normally be discarded. Christine Diani's material, technique and themes select her, and she begins a conversation with the material until the work is complete. Sue Katz converts 3-dimensional objects into two dimension surfaces through compositions of texture, color, paint and pattern. Rebecca Muller combines organic and inorganic matter-detritus discarded, lost eroded by weather. Mesh and metal form ambiguous space that record moments in time. Ethel Poindexter uses material with its own history, with respect for its unique character - lathe, shake shingles, screen bark. Anita Licis Ribak explores borderline states the grey area between conflict/harmony, silence/sound, light/dark, open/enclosed; solid and void using paper, steel, fabric or wire. B.Z. Reily puzzles together mtural and man-made found objects with hand built clay elements to create sculptural figures.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday March 8, 1-4 PM
Since the early '60s when he was an art student at Cornell (BFA '65), David Barten's compelling interest has been American folk sculpture of the nineteenth century. He has created sculptures of American historical figures, constructions and dioramas of rural scenes of New England. In 2005 he began to experiment with abstract designs composed of the tools that woodworkers used over the centuries to create homes, ships, barrels, wagons and other common objects. He has lived in western Massachusetts since 1977. "I've been a woodcarver since 1980 and a woodworker since 1987, but it was not until a few years ago that I began to look at old woodworking tools as more than practical objects. In studying especially the tools that had been handmade, I became aware that they were nearly perfect in design for the jobs they were intended to perform, and that their shapes were often quite beautiful.
"The tools in my sculptures date from the late seventeenth to the late nineteenth century and have been rejected by museum curators and collectors because they show the signs of long, hard use, and of long and often inappropriate storage. I set out to display these tools in sculptures that emphasize their form and reveal their inherent artistic qualities."

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, March 8, 1-4 PM
A faculty member with the title Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Bob Hallock is an experimental physicist and has been involved in photography for more than forty years. Since the early 1990's when he began to use his field camera, his work has been devoted primarily to black and white. He sees similarity between experimental physics and photography: each requires a good initial idea followed by meticulous attention to the execution of craft to reach satisfactory closure.
He has been engaged in photography for more than forty years with a concentration in the last decade on large-format and medium-format black and white photography using film and traditional darkroom techniques. He has studied with the well-known photographers and printers John Marcy, Ron Rosenstock, Bruce Barnbaum, Don Kirby and John Sexton. He is a member of three regional photographic organizations: Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists (charter member, and secretary), Western New England Large Format Photographers, and Photo-lunch.
Bob and his wife Norma have two married sons and live in Leverett, Massachusetts.
Event: Hand and Heart Art Exhibit and Reception Start Date: Monday February 16th, 2009 Reception: Saturday March 1st, 2008 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Monday March 31st, 2008 Location Name: Hampshire Regional YMCA Address: 286 Prospect St. City, ST: Northampton, MA Website:www.garden-cgc.org Fee: Free
For ten years, The Garde: A Center for Grieving Children and Teens has been providing support groups and grief education to young children, teens and their families whose lives have been disrupted by death.
Typically participants come together to share memories and emotions, complete projects, and participate in activities and games. Our goals are to provide a safe place to express one’s emotions as well as provide opportunities for learning effective coping skills. Art can be a powerful medium for children to express themselves. Grieving children can use art to help them further understand their experiences, give visual form to their fears and gain a sense of mastery and confidence while serving as a container for the intense feelings associated with grief.
In February, 4 local artists, Carol Belliveau, Dennis Caraher, Beth Fischer and Marjorie Latham served as our "artist in residence" and volunteered to teach their craft. Using the mediums of collage, mask making, fabric art and song, the artists guided all Garden participants--child and parent--in the creation of unique pieces of art. The theme that some participants focused their work on was "dreams, nightmares and worries". While others made commemorative pieces.
Come check it out! Hand & Heart Art Exhibit and Reception is March 1st from 5-7pm.
Heads 2 Hoops: The Art Of Megan E Labonte And Photography Of Derek Goodwin
Artist:Megan E Labonte, Derek Goodwin Event: Heads 2 Hoops: The Art of Megan E LaBonte and Photography of Derek Goodwin Start Date: Tuesday March 4th, 2008 Reception: Thursday March 6th, 2008 @ 7:00 PM End Date: Friday April 4th, 2008 Location Name: The Green Bean Restaurant Address: 241 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Fee: 0
Between June 15th and July 15th, 2007 sassy artist Megan E LaBonte displayed 12 heads in 12 storefront windows in downtown Northampton, MA. The exhibit was called HEAD CASES and was sponsored by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council. The heads were inspired by Megan's favorite female archetypes, goddesses and artists.
Derek Goodwin has been supporting himself as a photographer in the Valley for over 8 years. He is known for his documentary-style event photography and his more intimate portraiture. He has also been quietly amassing a portfolio of abstract night-time photography and other strange and unique work.
The "Heads 2 Hoops" exhibit features Derek's images of Megan's heads in their respective windows. Derek's digital photographs of the heads creates a synergy of the two artistic visions; wonderful images bursting with vibrant colors and playful content.
Derek and Megan also have hula-hooping, performance artist alter-egos. They are known about town as Substance D and Hoopmaster Sass, respectively. While photographing the heads they would often take breaks to hula hoop and engage Northampton's night life. Derek would set up his tripod and remote shutter release to make self-portraits with hoops twirling around their hips and torsos. A smattering of these images round out the exhibit, along with some more recent photographs of Megan's own painted head.
From Heads 2 Hoops, a fantastical exhibit in a wonderful new space! We hope to see you there!

"I recycle the discarded items of our existence; things found in the street, at flea markets and tag sales, or in nature. To me they are treasures - objects with a soul," says Farley. "Removed from their familiar surroundings and thrown together by chances, these objects take on new identities and arrive at an unintended destiny."
Farley holds a BFA from the University of Nebraska and a MFA in Arts Administration from the University of Iowa. Her work has been featured in galleries throughout the northeast and can be found in private collection as far away as Paris, France.

Beginning with detailed body measurements, we will draft individual slopers specifically tailored to each student's unique body shape. Too often we leap to the computer before the concept is clear. In this series of two workshops, we will cover how to design a page (or multiple pages) BEFORE we go to Photoshop or Illustrator. We'll step back and decide what the piece needs to be. How big? What shape? Should it be color or black and white? What typeface is best? Is the message (and unique selling position) clear? We'll determine how to create the strongest visual communication based on budget and purpose. Margot, who has taught advertising and design at both Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts in NYC, notes that students do NOT need to be experienced designers.
Thursday evenings for 2 weeks, April 3 and April 10, 6:30-9pm. $85
