My latest series of paintings and drawings are collectively titled Windows. Windows are openings that frame both the outside and inside world. The glass is a transparent curtain to the world stage, which has become a setting for the real, the unreal, and the surreal nature of my work. Windows are openings to vicarious adventure, the imaginative, flights of fantasy, invention, mystery, and contemplation. They are the object of daydreams and nightmares. There are two sides to windows: one side looks out, the other looks in; they, like art, are both private and public.

The eye is a window to both the external and internal world. The mind's eye gives form and meaning to our experiences. My windows are your windows to my vision and my experience.

The Collision Of Cultures Throughout Eastern Europe.
UNFOLDING IMAGES: Accordion Books by Laura Holland Artist: Laura Holland

UNFOLDING IMAGES
Accordion Books by Laura Holland
Artist Statement
Intriguing juxtapositions emerge when the formerly elegant, often dilapidated, history-laden architecture of Eastern Europe crushes up against the hustle, rush, and bustle of life today. Sometimes these buildings reel out of the collision covered in graffiti and stencil art; other times they are lovingly restored or elegantly remodeled; still other times they are razed to the ground and replaced by a completely new structure. In the fragments of these old buildings, I look for the eloquent details that, piece by piece, combine to convey some vital sense of the larger scene.
To suggest my impression of cultures colliding, I layered photographs taken in East Berlin between 1987 and 2006, in a series of photomontages. Next, I bundled images of old and new buildings stretching along one street in Berlin, to make books with Japanese stab bindings. But neither format could effectively tell the story the way I saw it: as a progression. Accordion books, with the images unfolding across connected pages, gave me the structure I needed. Berlin, Prague, Presov, Kosice, Cluj, and other Eastern European cities provided the subject matter.

Circles, squares, right angles, and diagonal lines - these formal elements are important both in composing individual photographs and in creating integrated sequences. I use Adobe Photoshop to adjust color and light for a unified effect within each series, and I print with matte ink to enhance the depth of tonal values.

Ashfield Exhibits/Events
Doubt, A Parable By John Patrick Shanley
Event: Doubt, A Parable
Start Date: Friday February 29th, 2008
End Date: Sunday March 2nd, 2008
Location Name: The First Congregational Church of Ashfield
Address: Main Street
City, ST: Ashfield, MA
Website: PaulineLive.com
Fee: $18/$22
Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley: The year is 1964. The country is on the verge of revolution, the loss of innocence, upheaval in many of its institutions and the determination to do what's right at any cost. Set in a parochial school in the Bronx, Doubt addresses the battle of wills between the "old school" Sister Aloysius and the young, charismatic and more progressive Father Flynn. Their conflict goes beyond the question of whether Father Flynn has been sexually inappropriate with the only Black student in the school. It touches upon a multitude of complicated issues: the inequities in the hierarchy of the Church, issues of silence, faith, change, trust, protection, certainty, and doubt.

Playwright John Patrick Shanley says in the preface to his script:

"There's something silent under every person, under every play. There is something unsaid under any given society, as well...You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down on that feeling. We've got to learn to live with a full measure of uncertainty. There is no last word. That is the silence underneath the chatter of our time."

Doubt won the 2005 Pulitizer Prize and Tony Award for Drama.

"Well-written roles that crackle with intelligence and rhythm"
John Lahr, NEW YORKER

Second Annual Fundraising Art Exhibit
Event: Art as Witness / Capturing Community Values
Start Date: Saturday February 16th, 2008
Reception: Saturday February 23rd, 2008 @ 5:00 PM
End Date: Saturday March 22nd, 2008
Location Name: Elusie Gallery
Address: 43 Main Street, Old Town Hall
City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Website: www.eastmontgallery.net
The theme of this year's juried exhibit is "Art as Witness, Capturing Community Values." Proceeds will be used to hire local artists to teach cultural workshops at the 2008 Family Gathering, a community-building program organized by the Easthampton-based Rosenberg Fund for Children.

The public is invited to attend the catered reception and meet the artists. The winner of the Juried Competition will be announced during the Artists' Reception on Saturday, February 23rd, from 5-8. The winning artist will sign limited edition prints of the selected work, and all original pieces will be for sale.

Judging by the applications already returned, Art as Witness promises to be an eclectic and thought-provoking exhibition. In styles including expressionism, realism, symbolism and even abstraction, artists have created pieces that depict the "Community Values" that are close to their hearts, while others have chosen to show their concerns or opinions about social, environmental or political issues.
The Eastmont Art Fund's mission is to involve LOCAL artists in fundraising for LOCAL organizations to their MUTUAL benefit. In this unique project, artists receive commissions on all sales of original artwork, and the remaining proceeds benefit the designated community organization. Additionally, the jury–selected winning artwork will be published in a limited edition, archival print and both the artist and beneficiary group will receive income from the sale of these prints.

Host Francesca Rheannon talks with novelist Kevin Patterson about his wonderful novel of the Arctic North and the Inuit, CONSUMPTION.

As a physician, Kevin Patterson treats Inuit communities of the Canadian Arctic. As a novelist, he explores the collision between the old and the new in that region. CONSUMPTION richly details the life of the Inuit as they transition from traditional nomadic life to settlement in towns built for them by the Canadian government. It tells the story of one family across three generations as its members make this transition, the uneasy peace they make with modern society, and the connections and tensions between them and the Kablunuks or whites who come to work in the Arctic.

Also, John Hanson Mitchell tells us about his search to solve the mystery surrounding the African American servant of a famous 19th century ornithologist. It's the subject of his 2005 book, LOOKING FOR MR. GILBERT.

When author John Hanson Mitchell found more than two thousand antique glass plate negatives in the attic of an old estate in Massachusetts, he thought at first they had been created by ornithologist William Brewster, a Boston Brahmin of the highest rank. But then, Mitchell began to have questions. They led him on a journey to uncover the history of the man who may very well have been the first major wildlife photographer, a little-known African American named Robert Alexander Gilbert.

STUFF: An exhibition by seven artists, who are drawn together by their use of discarded objects and reclaimed materials. Materials are transformed from the diurnal, by the artists’ attraction to object, color, and texture; decay, ambiguity and possibility for reuse to create meaning - or a being - in a new context.

The show opens with with a reception on March 21 from 5-8 p.m. Live music will feature the Low Country Messiahs, a band that plays acoustic blues with instruments made from found objects.

Featured artists include: Candace Bradbury-Carlin, who uses mainly kitchen material that would normally be discarded. Christine Diani's material, technique and themes select her, and she begins a conversation with the material until the work is complete. Sue Katz converts 3-dimensional objects into two dimension surfaces through compositions of texture, color, paint and pattern. Rebecca Muller combines organic and inorganic matter-detritus discarded, lost eroded by weather. Mesh and metal form ambiguous space that record moments in time. Ethel Poindexter uses material with its own history, with respect for its unique character - lathe, shake shingles, screen bark. Anita Licis Ribak explores borderline states the grey area between conflict/harmony, silence/sound, light/dark, open/enclosed; solid and void using paper, steel, fabric or wire. B.Z. Reily puzzles together mtural and man-made found objects with hand built clay elements to create sculptural figures.

For ten years, The Garde: A Center for Grieving Children and Teens has been providing support groups and grief education to young children, teens and their families whose lives have been disrupted by death.

Typically participants come together to share memories and emotions, complete projects, and participate in activities and games. Our goals are to provide a safe place to express one’s emotions as well as provide opportunities for learning effective coping skills. Art can be a powerful medium for children to express themselves. Grieving children can use art to help them further understand their experiences, give visual form to their fears and gain a sense of mastery and confidence while serving as a container for the intense feelings associated with grief.

In February, 4 local artists, Carol Belliveau, Dennis Caraher, Beth Fischer and Marjorie Latham served as our "artist in residence" and volunteered to teach their craft. Using the mediums of collage, mask making, fabric art and song, the artists guided all Garden participants--child and parent--in the creation of unique pieces of art. The theme that some participants focused their work on was "dreams, nightmares and worries". While others made commemorative pieces.

Come check it out! Hand & Heart Art Exhibit and Reception is March 1st from 5-7pm.

"Removed from their familiar surroundings and thrown together by chances, these objects take on new identities and arrive at an unintended destiny."

Farley holds a BFA from the University of Nebraska and a MFA in Arts Administration from the University of Iowa. Her work has been featured in galleries throughout the northeast and can be found in private collection as far away as Paris, France.

What: Juried Photo Contest for March - Theme: Environmental Portraiture

Call to Sculptures - Block Island Show 2008

Just an early heads up on the 2nd annual Block Island, RI Sculpture Show this spring / summer. "Eye of the Storm" - it will be a NO ENTRY FEE show.

See www.suburbanartists.com for pics of last years show and link to group site for more info. Block Island is a smaller version of Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. Its Stone Wall lined landscapes and endless Ocean Views and Beaches makes it a great place to see and spend time. It is extremely busy with Summer
Visitors.

Our Site is 1/2 way between the ferry docks in the center of town and the South East Lighthouse, one of the island's biggest draws. (It's about 2 minutes by car from town) Walkers, joggers, bikers, mopeders, and cars pass by our site on their way to and from town / lighthouse / beaches / fishing / 150 ft. tall oceanfront clay cliffs / home. Lots and lots of people will see our Show each time they pass it. Everytime I was there last year at least 1 passerby stopped and thanked us for bringing the sculptures to Block Island. They love the arts on Block Island.

Unsolicited Proposal Program - apex art, New York

Proposals accepted online until February 29.

Each season, apexart accepts proposals for two exhibitions. This program is designed to give people with interesting curatorial concepts an opportunity to have them considered and possibly presented in a professional, recognized venue based on the quality of idea rather than past experience.

We are currently accepting one-page, idea-based proposals for evaluation by an international panel of apexart associates (curators, artists, writers, philosophers). Submissions are reviewed independently, anonymously and without visual support material, evaluated solely on the strength of the idea. The two proposals with the highest ratings will be presented at apexart in the 2008/09 season (September 2008 to August 2009).

Please note we do not accept proposals for one person shows and discourage artists who are acting as curators from including their own work in their proposal. For the selected proposal, apexart will provide a $5,000 budget for travel (curator/artists), transportation of artwork, and general expenses. We will also provide a $2,000 curatorial honorarium for organization and brochure essay (approx. 1400 words).

City, ST: New York, NY
Deadline Friday, February 22. All visual artists are encouraged to submit art of the nude to the BAREBRUSH.com for selection by Zoran Crnkovic, artist and instructor for the March 2008 N*des-of-the-Month exhibition.

New York, NY – Feb. 4, 2008. BAREBRUSH.com announces today that Zoran Crnkovic, artist, and instructor at the Salmagundi Club, Greenwich Village, will select and curate the March 2008 N*des-of-the-Month virtual exhibition. The entry deadline for the March 2008 calendar is Friday, February 22. Art must be uploaded to BAREBRUSH.com on or before Friday, February 22 to be eligible for the March exhibition.

About Zoran Crnkovic
Zoran Crnkovic is a painter and sculptor. He is an art instructor of figure drawing at the Salmagundi Club in New York. His studio is in Long Island City.

When asked what he will be looking for when he selects the artwork for BAREBRUSH, Zoran said,

I'm looking for sense of rhythm and use of medium to communicate personal reality. The act of seeing translated to art. Not necessarily skill, but its use. Most important is the inner life of the artwork and its truthfulness, sprouting from intimate experience that is revealing the artist naked to its core. I'm looking for the courage to let pencil, brush, and pen ...reveal the one who is holding it.

Beginning with detailed body measurements, we will draft individual slopers specifically tailored to each student's unique body shape. From there we will construct a muslin sample garment to ensure a perfect fit. Some sewing will be required so students are encouraged to bring a sewing machine to class.

Too often we leap to the computer before the concept is clear. In this series of two workshops, we will cover how to design a page (or multiple pages) BEFORE we go to Photoshop or Illustrator. We'll step back and decide what the piece needs to be. How big? What shape? Should it be color or black and white? What typeface is best? Is the message (and unique selling position) clear? We'll determine how to create the strongest visual communication based on budget and purpose. Margot, who has taught advertising and design at both Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts in NYC, notes that students do NOT need to be experienced designers.
