Let's All Go To The Ballot Box
In less than a year we'll have a new president (shout Hallelujah!). Today is the primary, the first of two votes that will decide who that leader will be.

Growing up the saying was, "if you don't vote, you can't b*tch." That in itself seemed reason enough to head to the ballot box. (Insert slightly lyrical improvised verse) Complainers to the left of me, whiners to the right and here I am stuck in the middle with you.

Lord knows the next four years will bring plenty of good reason to complain and I sure won't keep my mouth shut during those times. But this election cycle brings more upbeat reason to vote. We have a chance to vote for someone hopeful, someone to bring about positive change. Let's not squander this rare opportunity. Please take a moment to vote on Tuesday, February 5th.

There's a lot going on this week down in the Valley. Scroll down for a full slate of events and oodles of artist opportunities.

Entitled "Pictures at an Exhibition," this collaborative project brings together an imaginative text with photographs made in museums around the world over of period several decades. The images depict Sherer's personal interpretation of the museum experience-candid moments of visitors and staff in interior and exterior settings. Senechal's words, based a performance of Modest Musorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," act as an accompanying voice as one views the photographs-much in the way Musorgsky's promenade threads the sections of his composition.

New World Theater Presents "Scratch & Burn" February 14 And February 15
Artist: New WORLD Theater
Event: "Scratch & Burn" by D-Projects, Inc.
Start Date: Thursday February 14th, 2008
End Date: Friday February 15th, 2008
Location Name: Bowker Auditorium
Address: Stockbridge Hall, UMass Amherst
City, ST: Amherst, MA
Website: www.newworldtheater.org
Fee: $15/$8/$5
Battles and wars rage in boardrooms, on street corners, and now on stage as New WORLD Theater kicks off its 2008 spring season. In "Scratch & Burn," ancient Zulu and Maori rituals mix with elements of butoh, hip hop and urban street combat to create a powerful dance theater piece about our primal urge to battle for supremacy and domination - posing the question, "When is war not the answer?"

Writer and director Teo Castellanos calls "Scratch & Burn" both "a ritual and a cry for peace." Combining break dancing, spoken word, Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags, projected text and live percussion, five male dancers assume a variety of roles. "Scratch & Burn" is fast and furious, forceful and athletic, delivering a searing critique of war, violence, racial stereotypes, the Bush administration and U.S. imperialism.

"Scratch & Burn" will be presented at Bowker Auditorium in Stockbridge Hall at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on February 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the general audience are $15; $8 for seniors and low income patrons; $5 for students with valid I.D. Tickets can be purchased through the Fine Arts Center Box Office by calling 1.800.999.UMASS or 413.545.2511, or visiting www.fineartscenter.com. For more information, please call New WORLD Theater at 413.545.1972 or visit www.newworldtheater.org.

Support for "Scratch & Burn" is provided by the New England Foundation for the Arts, the National Performance Network, and TRGGR Publications and Media Group.

Senator Rosenberg Hosts Art Show By Nancy Natale
Abstract Paintings: Between Now and Then Artist: Nancy Natale
Event: Abstract Paintings: Between Now and Then
Start Date: Thursday January 17th, 2008
End Date: Friday March 28th, 2008
Location Name: Office of Senator Stan Rosenberg
Address: State House, Room 320
City, ST: Boston, MA
Website: www.nancynatale.net
Fee: free
Nancy Natale, an Easthampton artist with a studio at the Eastworks Building, is exhibiting 25 paintings in oil, encaustic and acrylic in the offices of Senator Stan Rosenberg at the State House. The public is welcome to view the work by visiting the Senator's office in Room 320 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The title of Nancy Natale's show, "Abstract Paintings: Between Now and Then," refers to the "now" of looking and the "then" of making, meaning that the paintings themselves lie between now and then and are the bridge over time between artist and viewer. Natale works in a non-representational or abstract way because she believes it allows both the artist and the viewer more freedom to see the paintings as entities on their own rather than as representations of other things. Her works are full of color, pattern and lush texture. Sometimes alluding to nature, while not representing it, the challenge for Natale is to find the balance point between order and chaos in the colors, marks, shapes and patterns she makes on the canvas as she works to invent each painting and create works that invite repeated viewing.

Paintings by Alberto Mancini at Easthampton City Arts Gallery Space.

Alberto Mancini is from the small town of Atina, located in the mountains of southern Italy where his family has lived for 400 years. His father, a portrait photographer, taught Mancini to draw at a very young age, and encouraged him to experiment with a variety of media. Mancini had his first art exhibition at the age of 15. The work displayed was of figures and landscapes in oil.

Mancini has been described as both poet and painter. The Italian poet and essayist Alfonso Cardamone said "Mancini masters his technique...he is modern because he meticulously deconstructs images...he goes beyond every post-modernism and is never influenced by banality and self-complacent insignificance."

Alberto now makes his home at Eastworks, right here in Easthampton.

As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc. Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting. Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much.

At the transitional time from subconscious to conscious, whether it be from sleep or a daydream, there is a particularly odd mixture of peacefulness and the oncoming rush of anxiety that masquerades as everyday life, that I can never seem to escape. These woodcut prints represent that moment of transition. The personal references, places, objects, and people that I use create images that convey an attempt to forget all the pressures, responsibilities, and commitments of life, although they are still very present in the conscious state of mind. A symbol of reality, whether it represents the rapidly passing time, heartbreak, uncontrollable circumstances, broken promises, body image, or other intangible ideas and diverse emotions, brings one back to the reality they have momentarily escaped. I recently have become more engaged with an introspection of intimate emotions, whether intended, implied, or tainted by societal guidelines with a focus on the preparation and expectations of relationships, or lack thereof, in a new series of small scale, high contrast, linocut prints.

Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Russell Banks about THE RESERVE and with Tahmima Anam about A GOLDEN AGE.

Russell Banks's new novel THE RESERVE is "part love story, part murder mystery." Taking place in 1936, not long before the Second World War, the novel explores questions of "class, politics, art, love, and madness."
Russell Banks is one of America's best known novelists. He's the author of many books, including AFFLICTION, CLOUDSPLITTER, and THE SWEET HEREAFTER, which was made into a movie directed by Atom Egoyan. He's a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and his work has received numerous international prizes and awards. He lives in upstate New York.

When Tahmima Anam went back to her native Bangla Desh to do research for her doctoral thesis in anthroplogy, she gathered testimony from scores of survivors of Bangla Desh's 1971 War of Independence from Pakistan. The conflict occurred four years before she was born, and she left the country at the age of two, living in Europe and America. Her novel, A GOLDEN AGE, returns to Bangla Desh's struggle to become independent to tell the story of one family: a mother and her two children, both on the brink of adulthood.

Staged Reading Of Stuff Happens By David Hare

Event: Stuff Happens by David Hare
Start Date: Friday February 1st, 2008
End Date: Saturday February 2nd, 2008
Location Name: East Street Studios
Address: East Street
City, ST: Hadley, MA
Fee: $12 for adults and $10 for seniors
Twenty five (25) of the Valley's finest actors including Bill Dwight, Kelsey Flynn, Jeannine Haas, Van Farrier, Lisa Abend and John Haag will portray such characters as George Bush, Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Tony Blair etc. in Pauline Productions’ staged reading of Stuff Happens by David Hare.

David Hare, one of England’s most prominent contemporary playwrights, brings to life the disturbing events that led to the Iraq War, authenticated by multiple sources. In the play’s rapid fire dialogue, scenes of direct address quote people verbatim. And when the doors are closed on the world’s leaders, Hare uses his masterly imagination. The drama’s title, “Stuff Happens” was Donald Rumsfeld’s response when asked to comment on the widespread looting and pillage following the American conquest of Baghdad. Stuff Happens premiered at the National Theatre, London, in September 2004.

Pauline Productions, a local theater company fostering strong roles for women in theatre while supporting local causes, was founded by Jeannine Haas in June 2006. Haas, the artistic director, last produced and directed David Mamet’s Boston Marriage at the Hallie Flanagan Theatre, Northampton to sell-out crowds.

Proceeds from Stuff Happens will support future Pauline productions. Coming Feb 29-March 9, Pauline Productions will mount the area premiere of J. Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play Doubt.

Artist's Statement:

The acts of painting and drawing lead towards a moment of absorption in a sensed or perceived unity. I seek to deepen my relationship to a unified present while acknowledging the persistence and multiplicity of the past. By unfolding a response to simple, often architectural forms, I am able to explore interactions between increasingly complex moments. The place revealed by my work focuses a history of perception that allows me to witness the compression of time and to participate in the dialogues between memory and body, material and meaning, language and intuition.

Call to Sculptures - Block Island Show 2008

Just an early heads up on the 2nd annual Block Island, RI Sculpture Show
this spring / summer. "Eye of the Storm" - it will be a NO ENTRY FEE show.

See www.suburbanartists.com for pics of last years show and link to group
site for more info. Block Island is a smaller version of Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. Its Stone Wall lined landscapes and endless Ocean Views and Beaches makes it a great place to see and spend time. It is extremely busy with Summer
Visitors.

Our Site is 1/2 way between the ferry docks in the center of town and the South East Lighthouse, one of the island's biggest draws. (It's about 2 minutes by car from town) Walkers, joggers, bikers, mopeders, and cars pass by our site on their way to and from town / lighthouse / beaches / fishing / 150 ft. tall oceanfront clay cliffs / home. Lots and lots of people will see our Show each time they pass it. Everytime I was there last year at least 1 passerby stopped and thanked us for bringing the sculptures to Block Island. They love the arts on Block Island.

Unsolicited Proposal Program - apex art, New York

Proposals accepted online until February 29.

Each season, apexart accepts proposals for two exhibitions. This program is designed to give people with interesting curatorial concepts an opportunity to have them considered and possibly presented in a professional, recognized venue based on the quality of idea rather than past experience.

We are currently accepting one-page, idea-based proposals for evaluation by an international panel of apexart associates (curators, artists, writers, philosophers). Submissions are reviewed independently, anonymously and without visual support material, evaluated solely on the strength of the idea. The two proposals with the highest ratings will be presented at apexart in the 2008/09 season (September 2008 to August 2009).

Please note we do not accept proposals for one person shows and discourage artists who are acting as curators from including their own work in their proposal. For the selected proposal, apexart will provide a $5,000 budget for travel (curator/artists), transportation of artwork, and general expenses. We will also provide a $2,000 curatorial honorarium for organization and brochure essay (approx. 1400 words).
