Waning January
Thank goodness January is almost over! I wish we could all use a rope to lasso the sun and bring in the spring a little sooner. Slowly but surely the days are getting longer, and the calendar of events is getting a little more plump. Here are the openings and opportunities for this week:

Amherst Exhibits/Events
Artists Ponder The Black Hole Of Arts Coverage!
COVER ME: Curated by MO RINGEY Artist: Larry Slezak, Maggie Nowinski, Lisa Scollan, Mo Ringey, Holly Murray, Greg Kline, Mike Karmody, Ian Burns, Carey Ascenzo, Jon Whitney, Anila Zaida
Event: COVER ME: Curated by MO RINGEY
Start Date: Sunday February 3rd, 2008
Reception: Sunday February 3rd, 2008 @ 3:00 PM
End Date: Tuesday February 26th, 2008
Location Name: Hampden Gallery
Address: Southwest Residential Area University of Massachusetts Amherst
City, ST: Amherst, MA
Website: WWW.UMASS.EDU/FAC/HAMPDEN
Fee: Free
"Cover Me" is an exhibition born of a humorous post on MO RINGEY'S blog, "Art & About with Mo", on The Valley Advocate website. The post, "Wednesday, April 04, 2007. Arts Coverage & Some Guy I Dated In High School", commented on artists' laments regarding the dwindling coverage of arts in the print media due to heightened coverage of shows like "American Idol", among other topics, and suggested a call to action; a show of artists commenting on the issue of arts coverage.

As a result of response to the post, Holyoke-based artist MO RINGEY selected twelve artists including sculptors, painters and new media artists to comprise the exhibition."Cover Me" can be read as a plea from artist to critic asking for one of an artist's basic needs to be met: see the work and form a response. Visual art is, after all, a communication system and thrives with the healthy back and forth between maker and viewer.

GALLERY HOURS
Monday - Thursday noon - 6 p.m. and Sunday 2-5 p.m.
Closed State, Federal and University Holidays.
All events are free and open to the public.

By means of commonplace methods and materials such as tape, Kleenex tissue, and scrap wood, Taiga Ermansons’ art uses marks as signs of presence. Her work is exact, without illusion or fuss.

A native New Yorker, Taiga Ermansons studied art at the School of Visual Arts and The New School in New York City and holds a BA in studio art from Smith College. Her installation work has been shown at Open Square, Holyoke, MA, and the Oresmann Gallery at Smith College. Her drawings have been included in New York/New England/New Talent at Hampden Gallery, UMass-Amherst, Spencertown Academy Arts Center, NY, and the upcoming 2008 New England/New Talent exhibition at the Fitchburg Museum of Art.

Chandra J. Meesig is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, and received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. For four years, Meesig has been photographing the backs of photographs, scanning them into a computer, and making digital C-prints that reveal deterioration and human markings that result from the corrosive effects of time, handling, and storage. While the fronts once depicted people, places, or occasions of importance, the back is now the front of the photo, and the vehicle of specificity is denied. Meesig’s work with the backs of photographs is about the viewer observing what he/she sees, thinks, and feels when faced with the essence of an image and an absence of clear reference.

She has shown her work at a number of venues throughout the U.S. and

Entitled "Pictures at an Exhibition," this collaborative project brings together an imaginative text with photographs made in museums around the world over of period several decades. The images depict Sherer's personal interpretation of the museum experience-candid moments of visitors and staff in interior and exterior settings. Senechal's words, based a performance of Modest Musorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," act as an accompanying voice as one views the photographs-much in the way Musorgsky's promenade threads the sections of his composition.

As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc. Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting. Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much.

Hadley Exhibits/Events
Staged Reading Of Stuff Happens By David Hare
Artist: Pauline Productions
Event: Stuff Happens by David Hare
Start Date: Friday February 1st, 2008
End Date: Saturday February 2nd, 2008
Location Name: East Street Studios
Address: East Street
City, ST: Hadley, MA
Fee: $12 for adults and $10 for seniors
Twenty five (25) of the Valley's finest actors including Bill Dwight, Kelsey Flynn, Jeannine Haas, Van Farrier, Lisa Abend and John Haag will portray such characters as George Bush, Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Tony Blair etc. in Pauline Productions’ staged reading of Stuff Happens by David Hare.

David Hare, one of England’s most prominent contemporary playwrights, brings to life the disturbing events that led to the Iraq War, authenticated by multiple sources. In the play’s rapid fire dialogue, scenes of direct address quote people verbatim. And when the doors are closed on the world’s leaders, Hare uses his masterly imagination. The drama’s title, “Stuff Happens” was Donald Rumsfeld’s response when asked to comment on the widespread looting and pillage following the American conquest of Baghdad. Stuff Happens premiered at the National Theatre, London, in September 2004.

Pauline Productions, a local theater company fostering strong roles for women in theatre while supporting local causes, was founded by Jeannine Haas in June 2006. Haas, the artistic director, last produced and directed David Mamet’s Boston Marriage at the Hallie Flanagan Theatre, Northampton to sell-out crowds.

Proceeds from Stuff Happens will support future Pauline productions. Coming Feb 29-March 9, Pauline Productions will mount the area premiere of J. Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play Doubt.

Writers Voice looks at the environmental causes of illness and how the truth about them is being distorted and suppressed.
Environmental health expert Dr. Devra Davis tells us about THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE WAR ON CANCER (Perseus Books, 2007). She says 95% of all cancers are caused by our environment–and that powerful special interests have colluded with government and watchdog organizations like the American Cancer Society to sow doubt on longstanding research proving that. Davis is director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, where she also teaches epidemiology.
We also talk with occupational health physician Dr. Paul Blanc. He tells us about HOW EVERYDAY PRODUCTS MAKE PEOPLE SICK: Toxins at Home and in the Workplace (2006).

American International College Presents Recent Drawings And Paintings By Lisa Houck Leary
Artist: LIsa Houck Leary
Event: "Transitions", an exhibition of drawings and paintings
Start Date: Friday January 25th, 2008
End Date: Friday February 22nd, 2008
Location Name: Karen Sprague Cultural Center, American International College, Springfield, Ma
Address: 1000 State Street
City, ST: Springfield, MA
Website: www.aic.edu

American International College is pleased to present, "Transitions", a series of drawings and paintings by Northampton artist Lisa Houck Leary.

The artist categorizes her artwork this way: there is work that was created before her husband passed away in September of 2006 from pancreatic cancer and there is work that has been created after his death, and they differ visually and conceptually.

Leary's more recent work features a single or mutiple vessel forms that are suspended or appear to be situated in an ambiguous space amid specific sets of numbers, letters and text/phrases. The numbers in most cases, were assigned to her husband. For instance, his service number from serving in the Vietnam War, telephone number, birthdate, etc.

The artist thinks of this new work as being physical, about the body. The vessel forms can be thought of as symbols of the human body, a container
so to speak, while the thin layers of paint simultaneously hide and reveal history and experience.

Artist's Statement:

The acts of painting and drawing lead towards a moment of absorption in a sensed or perceived unity. I seek to deepen my relationship to a unified present while acknowledging the persistence and multiplicity of the past. By unfolding a response to simple, often architectural forms, I am able to explore interactions between increasingly complex moments. The place revealed by my work focuses a history of perception that allows me to witness the compression of time and to participate in the dialogues between memory and body, material and meaning, language and intuition.
