To give expression to her "inner voices", Alhach draws from personal history, pre-Columbian motifs and aquatic life forms, to create this body of intimate yet deeply communicative sculpture.

Hilda Maria spent her childhood in Colombia playing in the mud. She learned to love the adobe of colonial architecture and its inherent warmth. In 1996 she left her life in the corporate world to pursue art full time and by 2000, she had graduated from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as a working sculptor. Her work in hand-built ceramics and glass structures grows out of all of these experiences and traditions.

The Artisan Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of recent work by master potter Val Cushing. Mr. Cushing received his BFA and MFA in 1956 from Alfred University and taught pottery and technical courses there from 1957 until his retirement in 1997. He has been designated Professor Emeritus by the university. His work is included in many private and public collections including; American Craft Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Cooper Hewitt Museum, Renwick Gallery, Ohi Museum of Ceramics - Japan, and many, many more.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I aspire to make pottery that is both beautiful and useful. I place as much emphasis as I can on the sensuous qualities of a pot, mainly by the use of color, form and surface textures that are as stimulating to see as to touch. The goal is to make use more pleasurable. I also make some vessels based on a different premise. In these, use is less of an issue; much more importance is placed on the imaginative potential of pottery forms to be seen as sculpture is seen. All of my work, whether pottery or vessels, employs various references and influences that help direct the visual dynamics. But nature, above all else, is my primary source. I think about how and why things look as they do. I make drawings from nature, from the landscape, from growing things, and from my thoughts about them - something coalesces from all of this and becomes a piece.

Stephanie Cramer, Painter as Printmaker,
January 8th-February 17th, 2008

Stephanie Cramer will be exhibiting her monotypes along side several of her large vibrant paintings at the Gallery at Zea Mays Printmaking, Florence, MA. Zea Mays gives Cramer a place to work communally with other artists. "Normally the process of painting is isolated, Zea Mays gives me the opportunity to work in the presence of other artists. "My preference is monotype, the most closely related to the process of painting, often called the painter's printmaking process.

"Center stage in my art is the figure-an object in motion, as if the figure is caught, just for an instant, galimpse, a snapshot before the gesture is complete. I'm not in search of exact representation."

About The Show: In the world of contemporary art the critical establishment often ignores or dismisses painting as being an outmoded form – historically superceded.Yet painting’s audience continues to grow and large numbers of young artists continue to paint. Like poetry, music, dance or drama, it is a form, not just another medium. Through the centuries that form has retained its capacity to express the vision of painters as different as Giotto and de Kooning. This exhibition will reveal some of the richness and diversity of painters working today - seeking to bring life and presence from inert materials.
