A Time of Opportunity
Happy New Year!

2008 is upon us, and with it comes new opportunity. Many people use this moment in time to make personal resolutions: losing weight, stopping smoking, finding a new job. All are worthwhile goals that involve hard work. We have a more modest suggestion - try something new.

This edition of the newsletter is filled with opportunity. New shows are planned. A new grant season is coming. Career opportunities announced. So scroll on down and see what piques your interest. The forms may be slightly humbling to fill out, but the feeling of excitement that comes from trying something new makes it all worthwhile.

Best wishes to all.

P.S. We'll return to our Tuesday publication cycle next week. Please be sure to get your announcements in by mid-day next Monday. Cut and paste this link into your browser window to submit your information: http://www.artwalkeasthampton.org/artsnewsletter/

From Penelope: 'The Recipes for Life© (made in the USA) are original art, handwritten recipes full of wisdom, humor and love to be given to the person Going to College, Getting Married, Having a Baby or Leaving Home for the first time. Before giving to the person intended it is suggested that you and others family members or friends write personal notes on the extra cards and file them in the case.
These Recipes for Life© have been a big hit at Bridal and Baby Showers. Putting different letters of the alphabet on the top of the cards everyone attending is asked to write a message of wisdom, humor or love on a recipe card that is somehow related to the letter at the top of the card. It is then filed with the printed ones.
Designed to give the recipient treasured words to read while away from their family and friends. Words to warm the heart and bring a smile to their face.
Five Dollars of each one sold is donated to a memorial scholarship established in memory of my son, Dr. R.W.'Buddy' Burniske, at the University of Hawaii . This scholarship will be given yearly to an outstanding graduate student in his field.'

She has been involved in local fine art organizations for many years. Photography is my passion. I work in traditional black and white as well as digital photography. My work reflects who I am. It shows the complexity within which I work. As artists we are constantly progressing to new and exciting platforms. I am in a period of life where my work reflects the space around me. The places, people, and objects with which I see around me are what makes for the compositions in my photographs. I observe life around me. I see what people don't usually notice as they pass through on their every day routines. I photograph many places and objects that people pass daily but never notice. I try to give new perspectives on places and objects that people are already aware of.

Born and raised in Central Minnesota, Aric Bieganek grew up infused with the belief that music can both tell stories and inspire personal and social change. His perspective and his songs -– from the introspectively placid to the passionately outspoken -– all embody this belief, just as they have since he was a little boy playing his first plastic guitar. Although Aric has traveled as far east as Japan, as far north as Iceland, and across the United States in his trusty Ford, his connection to his roots is evident in all the poetry and fervor of his songwriting.

Mark Brown's Award-winning Sculpture Robots On Exhibit At The Artisan Gallery
Robots Artist: Mark Brown
Event: Robots
Start Date: Friday January 4th, 2008
End Date: Thursday January 31st, 2008
Location Name: Artisan Gallery
Address: 162 Main Street
City, ST: Northampton, MA
Website: www.theartisangallery.com
Fee: none
Mark Brown makes fun, one-of-a-kind mixed media sculptures and clocks in his backyard studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. He was trained as a painter and worked on canvas for 25 years. This interest in color, pattern and figurative imagery can be seen in the current body of three-dimensional work. Each of his pieces are unique, stylized and engaging characters.

Most of the components in Mark's artworks have had another life and indeed much of what he uses is collected at tag sales and flea markets. This ensures that each individual piece has its own identity. Mark Brown responds to the opportunities presented by the materials at hand. He believes that each object has its own power. These household items were designed with style and utility in mind. This dash of panache carries over into the new, transformed union of vintage bits and pieces and contemporary sensibilities.

Mark loves to make robots because they are completely realized individuals. Each robot has its own identity - a marriage between the components and the audience's response to the cultural elements that are identified in the parts and pieces that make up the whole. There is a rich recent cultural language that has come from television and movies, such as "Lost in Space", "The Jetsons", and the "Star Wars" series where the robots are the heroes. They are endearing because they embody many of the best characteristics of our human experience.

Melissa Incampo returns to exhibit again in The Robert Floyd Photo Gallery and Learning Center. Melissa's black and white candids capture the essence of the people and scenes she photographs in a revealing photojournalistic style.Ms. Incampo has served most recently as the juror in The Gallery's Sixth Annual "Women in History Month" Photo Exhibit. Her working in prestigious NYC photo galleries has assisted Melissa in training her mind, heart and eye to continually captivate us with her striking images.

"This collection of images began in 1996 and continues to follow the everyday activities of the middle class in America. This work serves as an introduction to communities where I’ve spent significant periods of my life, including New England, New Mexico and New York. Rarely directing the scene, I react to moments that feel raw. There are many hidden clues within the narrative style of the work which presents my photography as a hope chest of stories. Lee Friedlander once simply stated that for him, “photography began as a compulsion and ends as a way of life”. I feel the compulsion to interpret my surroundings through a sequence of photographs that are refreshingly straightforward", shares Melissa Incampo.

Small Arts Group Die In Invitational
Sponsoring Group Name: MA Small Arts Groups
Show Name: SMALL ARTS GROUP DIE-IN
Submission Due Date: Sunday January 13th, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.boston.com/business/articles/2007/12/19/study_small_arts_groups_at_risk/?page=1
City, ST: Boston, MA
Are you a struggling small arts group?

According to a report from the Boston Foundation, if your organization's "vision either dissipated or lost its resonance with its audience or supporters," you should think about pulling the plug. Of course, you've thought of calling it quits before, but now comes a call from a Major Player. Is the call for you? Look deep into your heart. Consider how fruitless it all can seem. Now think of the burden that will be lifted from your shoulders if you answer the Foundation's call for some small arts groups to die. No one wants to go first. Wouldn't it be easier if groups went together, all at once?

Proposal 1: SMALL ARTS GROUP DIE-IN
On Sunday, January 13, at spots all over the city, arts groups will be dying off. Each group will choose its own way out. You could die in public space, your own space if you have one, or at the new $50 million Institute for Contemporary Art.

Proposal 2. SMALL ARTS GROUP DIE-OFF
On Sunday, January 13, a competition between small arts groups in their assorted deaths, judged by celebrities.

It is time to give up. You know who you are. Let us help the ones who decide to take their leave by making sure that they go out in STYLE! The ICA may host the various ashes of the groups in its permanent collection.

Submission Due Date: Saturday March 1st, 2008

Administered by the French American Cultural Exchange, the French American Fund for Contemporary Music supports contemporary music projects that foster cultural exchange between France and the United States.

The fund awards grants to nonprofit institutions celebrating the work of living composers in both countries. Collaborations combining new French and American works are encouraged.

Only projects involving works by living composers or works composed during the last fifty years will be considered. The repertoire should fall within one of these categories: contemporary music for classical instrumentation; computer-assisted composition and research with multimedia tools; and new forms of improvised and electronic music. Special consideration will be given to projects involving the commission of new works. Only nonprofit institutions may apply. American institutions must provide proof of their 501(c)(3) status. Examples of eligible institutions include university-level music departments or conservatories; research studios; performers, including orchestras, ensembles, soloists, and conductors; and artistic programmers, including festivals and concert halls or any organization favoring musical creations, including collaborations with professionals in other fields, such as dance, theater, film, visual arts, or new media. The amount requested cannot exceed 50 percent of the project’s total budget. More information at http://www.facecouncil.org/music/music.html
