It's hard to believe that we were enjoying a warm autumn only two months ago.
Now all the branches are covered in an icy sheen and my fingers are filthy and chilled from scattering rock salt like bird seed on the sidewalk and driveway. Funny thing about global warming; it's just not as beach-y as it sounds. The climate change bring more storms, a potentially colder northern climate and unpredictable weather patterns. This week's lineup of events includes environmental journalist George Monbiot on Valley Free Radio talking about global warming and what can be done. So if you want to know why the ice outside isn't warmer, listen in on Thursday to find out.
Experience warmth in your mind with Ian Pouliot's "Wicked Rad People" exhibition at Northampton's Naked Art Gallery and Melissa Incampo's "Leisure Series" images at Southampton's Robert Floyd Photo Gallery. Both shows open this week with receptions. You'll feel warm all over, but bundle up for it.
In between Northampton and Southampton is Easthampton (don't ask me how that works geographically). We had a great Art Walk on Saturday; thank you to all who stepped out for the fun. If you get a chance, check out the "large paintings of people I don't know" show at Williston Northampton by Sheri Snedeker. It runs through the end of the month.

Maggie Nowinski is showing three large scale collage paintings that are aesthetically and conceptually inspired by the (un)natural disintigration of billboards. The paintings have been constructed through a build and reduce process she calls stick, peel, stick, peel.
Each painting has a different theme; pornography in relation to weekly sale grocery circulation adds, babies in relation to blueprints, and semiotic deconstruction in relation to personal sign systems. The paintings are playful and layered.
They are on view at Open Space at the Paragon Arts and Industries building in Easthampton at 150 Pleasant St. Hours are from 9am 6 pm M-F or by appointment.
On December 8th from 5-8pm during Art Walk Easthampton, the artist will be holding an opening for the work, along with an open studio. Other artists in the Paragon Building are expected to open their studios as well.
These paintings will be up through mid December and are priced to sell. For more information please contact the artist: maggienowinski@gmail.com, www.maggienowinski.com.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online.

Lathrop's Art Committee is pleased to present selected works by artist/photographer Jill Lewis in its Gallery from November 30th to January 3rd. Ms. Lewis, an Easthampton native, uses medium and large format film cameras to create her work. Whereas her color works focus a minimalist's eye on objects that seem to dance within negative space, her black and whites embrace the detritus patina of old objects. Her third category of works integrates the two mediums of photographs and charcoal, exploring nuances between the two.
Lewis is a recent graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
There will be an opportunity to meet and greet Ms Lewis at a reception on December 13th from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at the Gallery in the Lathrop Inn.

Melissa Incampo returns to exhibit again in The Robert Floyd Photo Gallery and Learning Center. Melissa's black and white candids capture the essence of the people and scenes she photographs in a revealing photojournalistic style.Ms. Incampo has served most recently as the juror in The Gallery's Sixth Annual "Women in History Month" Photo Exhibit. Her working in prestigious NYC photo galleries has assisted Melissa in training her mind, heart and eye to continually captivate us with her striking images.
"This collection of images began in 1996 and continues to follow the everyday activities of the middle class in America. This work serves as an introduction to communities where Ive spent significant periods of my life, including New England, New Mexico and New York. Rarely directing the scene, I react to moments that feel raw. There are many hidden clues within the narrative style of the work which presents my photography as a hope chest of stories. Lee Friedlander once simply stated that for him, photography began as a compulsion and ends as a way of life. I feel the compulsion to interpret my surroundings through a sequence of photographs that are refreshingly straightforward", shares Melissa Incampo.
