TITLES: An exhibition of artists' book works at Amherst Books.
Event: TITLES: An exhibition of artists' book works at Amherst Books. Start Date: Wednesday October 24th, 2007 Reception: Saturday November 24th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Sunday November 25th, 2007 Location Name: Amherst Books Address: 8 Main street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:www.umass.edu/fac/calendar/universitygallery/events/Titles.html Fee: Free
The University Gallery, in collaboration with Amherst Books, will sponsor Titles, an itinerant exhibition that is designed to adapt and travel to bookstores in different cities. This project reflects the "curatorial" interest of the WayUpWayDown collective (comprising Toronto artists Sunny Kerr, Yam Lau, Tania Ursomarzo) to set in motion itinerant exhibition structures and maneuvers.
Many area artists, designers and architects, such as Robert Cumming, Young Min Moon, Stephen Petegorsky, Karen Dolmanisth, and Sigrid Miller Pollin amongst others, have been invited to produce book works or related artworks that have a relation to the chosen title found under a category in the bookstore (i.e. literature, children's books, art, etc.) and are placed in a slot on the shelf according to alphabetical ordering. A list will be provided to the visitors to locate the works.
The first exhibition of Titles opened in June 2007 at Balfour Books in Toronto with 28 participating artists. Its second venue will be at Amherst Books, and will then travel to Montreal later in this fall. This project reflects the "curatorial" interest of the WayUpWayDown collective to set in motion itinerant exhibition structures and maneuvers. It is the mandate of the collective to facilitate tenuous and fluid relations between exhibitions, artworks, and communities.
Titles is planned to coincide with BookMarks: A Celebration of the Art of the Book, a region-wide celebration of the book sponsored by Muse

Artist:Keith Hollingworth, Stephen St. Francis Decky Event: November at Gallery A3 Start Date: Thursday November 1st, 2007 End Date: Saturday December 1st, 2007 Location Name: Gallery A3 Address: 28 Amity Street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:www.gallerya3.com Fee: free
Conversations with Artists: November 15 at 7:00
Keith Hollingworth's recent works are constructions using colored plexiglass, floresent light and found objects. Many of these works are titled as homages to art world luminaries. Keith writes in a recent statement, "Light pushes away the darkness. We need to stand in the light, it illuminates our lives. We need to lighten up."
Stephen St. Francis Decky has been creating a perpetually-unfolding group of characters on an ever-shifting landscape since he was a kid. The characters are born in drawings and paintings then brought out into the real world as hand-sewn dolls. The dolls are then placed on sets and photographed back into that other world. Stephen's images are still-lifes from stories that overlap and continue in many directions at once, in loops and cycles, from one terrain to another and then back again.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1-7:00 pm.
Start Date: Thursday November 29th, 2007 End Date: Friday November 30th, 2007 Location Name: Bowker Auditorium Address: Stockbridge Hall, UMass Amherst City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:www.newworldtheater.org
On November 29 and 30, in Bowker Auditorium, New WORLD Theater will present "Mestiza Power" by Concepción León Mora and the Sa'as Tun theater company. This poetic and powerfully performed piece is a testimonial that portrays the lives and the dignity of contemporary Mayan women from the Yucatán, Mexico.
The artists recount childhood memories, educational experiences, culture, and current issues facing indigenous women through a series of monologues and interviews conducted with street vendors in Mérida, the capitol of Yucatán and other rural areas of the state. These stories, ranging from domestic violence to street life to mystical practice, paint a portrait of the faces, the thoughts, and the voices of today's Mayan women. New WORLD Theater has commissioned Harley Erdman, of the UMass Department of Theater, to create the first English translation of "Mestiza Power" which will be presented as supertitles during the Spanish language performance.
"Mestiza Power" will be presented at Bowker Auditorium in Stockbridge Hall at the UMass Amherst on Thursday, November 29 and Friday, November 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the general audience are $15; $8 for seniors and low income patrons; $5 for students with valid I.D. Tickets can be purchased through the Fine Arts Center Box Office by calling 1.800.999.UMAS or 413.545.2511. CONSIDER THE CUP
That one right in front of you. Maybe you’ve just bought it and added it to your collection. Or think about an old favorite at home; perhaps an intimate part of your breakfast ritual.
If your appreciation was initially it's appearance, consider the potter's aesthetic decisions; shape, size, proportion, color and decoration. What about its tactile qualities? Consider the unaccountable failures and sweet breakthroughs that led to this wonderful vessel of yours.

Hampshire Choral Society, Allan Taylor, conductor, presents Faurè's Requiem. Featuring a 150 voice chorus and orchestra, Jack Tozzi, bass, and Jenn Tyo, soprano. With special guests the Hampshire Young People's Chorus, KC Conlan, conductor.
About Faurè's Requiem in D minor:
The 20th Century American Composer Aaron Copland once referred to Gabriel Faurè as the "French Brahms." Like Brahms, Faurè practiced a restrained Romanticism; his subtlety and appreciation of form were more akin to Baroque and Classical composers than the late Romantics. Faurè's Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 is a perfect example - unlike the compositions of Wagner or Berlioz, it seldom asks musicians to rise above a mezzoforte. Fauré once emphatically wrote of it "altogether it is as GENTLE as I am myself!!"
This gentleness gives the entire work a rare combination of profundity and peacefulness. As Faurè also wrote, "It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience."
Faurè originally scored his Requiem for chamber orchestra. Unfortunately, this version was lost the 1980's, when John Rutter rediscovered Faurè's manuscript. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, this is the scoring that the Hampshire Choral Society will perform.

Sponsoring Group Name: ReconnectUS.org Show Name: EXPERIENCING THE WAR IN IRAQ Submission Due Date: Saturday January 12th, 2008 Submission Fees: None Website:www.reconnectus.org City, ST: Fall River, MA
This multi-media art exhibition, curated by artists, will bring together diverse expressions of the War in Iraq, opening in several venues in Pawtucket and Providence, from March 5 to March 30, 2008. It will then travel to Fall River in April and to Boston in May.
In these times of extreme political division and inadequate or biased media coverage, the exhibition will engage the American public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. Through the universal language of art, the exhibition seeks to give a human face to the complex conflict in Iraq and to engage those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the fearsome reality of the war. We ask the questions: What does it mean to experience this war firsthand, in combat, or as an Iraqi civilian? What does it mean to experience it from a distance, or on television? How can we in America reconnect to the reality of war? Are there shared visions of peace despite cultural and religious differences? The work will be selected purely on artistic merit and look to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics.
The call goes out to both soldiers and civilians for video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. The show will open simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory), Machines With Magnets, Blackstone Valley Visitors Center, AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema, in Pawtucket and Providence, RI.
