Artist:Keith Hollingworth, Stephen St. Francis Decky Event: November at Gallery A3 Start Date: Thursday November 1st, 2007 End Date: Saturday December 1st, 2007 Location Name: Gallery A3 Address: 28 Amity Street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:www.gallerya3.com Fee: free
Conversations with Artists: November 15 at 7:00
Keith Hollingworth's recent works are constructions using colored plexiglass, floresent light and found objects. Many of these works are titled as homages to art world luminaries. Keith writes in a recent statement, "Light pushes away the darkness. We need to stand in the light, it illuminates our lives. We need to lighten up."
Stephen St. Francis Decky has been creating a perpetually-unfolding group of characters on an ever-shifting landscape since he was a kid. The characters are born in drawings and paintings then brought out into the real world as hand-sewn dolls. The dolls are then placed on sets and photographed back into that other world. Stephen's images are still-lifes from stories that overlap and continue in many directions at once, in loops and cycles, from one terrain to another and then back again.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1-7:00 pm.

This show "Of Earth and Sky" represents her work from the past two years. All of the paintings are extracted from natural elements and done with acrylic paint on canvas. The older works in the series have more concrete forms, while the most recent are a purer form of organic abstraction.
Caitlin Waugh is a graduate from Hampshire College. She has a studio in the Pioneer Valley and the focus of her work is stained galass. She will be displaying a flight of three-dimensional hanging glass landscapes. Small, simple, and geometric, these hanging pieces create dynamic spaces and backdrops across which tiny silouttes of birds fly.

Deborah Rubin At The Grubbs Gallery
Artist:Deborah Rubin Event: Big Paintings by Deborah Rubin on display at the Grubbs Gallery Start Date: Thursday November 1st, 2007 End Date: Friday November 30th, 2007 Location Name: The Williston Northampton School in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center Address: 19 Payson Avenue City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:www.williston.com Fee: 0
The Williston Northampton School presents Deborah Rubin's Big Paintings, on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery November 1-30, 2007. An artist's reception will be held in the gallery on November 4, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Deborah Rubin has been pushing the boundaries of photo-realism and hyper-realism since the mid 1970s with an eye on nature and architecture. She paints in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. Born in Chicago in 1948, Rubin holds a BFA from the University of Illinois. She currently lives in Western Massachusetts.
"My work can be highly realistic, with every detail present, but at the same time the close-ups of the natural world become almost abstract in their patterns. The more I look at paint, the more I know, and the more intimate I become with the subject. This 'looking' is the most important and interesting process in my work. It is the art of seeing, and I carry it wherever I go," says Rubin.
Her work has shown nationally in many group and solo shows. She has shown extensively throughout Western Massachusetts including at R. Michelson Galleries of Northampton and Amherst.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online at http://www.williston.com. For more information, please call (413) 529-3000.

Tune into the show on air or on line to win a copy of A LIVING LENS. See below to find out how you can win a copy of A Living Lens.
FAST COMPANY is a funny, charming memoir of what happened when David M. Gross left his job as a young Manhattan, corporate finance lawyer to help turn failing sport motorcycle company Ducati around for its new owners. In our conversation, we talk about the Italian preference for quality over crass materialism, the tug-of-war between family and identity for gay Italians -- and very fast, very sexy motorcycles.
Also, Alana Newhouse is arts editor of the English-language edition of the venerable Jewish newspaper, The Forward. She edited A LIVING LENS, which collects photos of events and people around the world, Jewish and non-Jewish, found in the archives of the Forward from the past 100 years. She talks about this graphic, historical chronicle as well as about how The Forward changed journalism in America.

Hampshire Choral Society, Allan Taylor, conductor, presents Faurè's Requiem. Featuring a 150 voice chorus and orchestra, Jack Tozzi, bass, and Jenn Tyo, soprano. With special guests the Hampshire Young People's Chorus, KC Conlan, conductor.
About Faurè's Requiem in D minor:
The 20th Century American Composer Aaron Copland once referred to Gabriel Faurè as the "French Brahms." Like Brahms, Faurè practiced a restrained Romanticism; his subtlety and appreciation of form were more akin to Baroque and Classical composers than the late Romantics. Faurè's Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 is a perfect example - unlike the compositions of Wagner or Berlioz, it seldom asks musicians to rise above a mezzoforte. Fauré once emphatically wrote of it "altogether it is as GENTLE as I am myself!!"
This gentleness gives the entire work a rare combination of profundity and peacefulness. As Faurè also wrote, "It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience."
Faurè originally scored his Requiem for chamber orchestra. Unfortunately, this version was lost the 1980's, when John Rutter rediscovered Faurè's manuscript. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, this is the scoring that the Hampshire Choral Society will perform.

He studied fine art at SUNY Oswego, Syracuse University, and Scuola Lorenzo De Medici in Florence, Italy. After spending five years as a muralist, he took a major leap in his career path and began illustrating children's books in 2001. Since then he has illustrated thirteen children's books, including James Howe's Ready-To-Read Bunnicula Series (Simon and Schuster, 2004-2007) and Eve Bunting's Hurry! Hurry! (Harcourt, 2007). Artist:Sherid Adams Event: Arno Marris Gallery, Westifeld State College Start Date: Wednesday November 7th, 2007 End Date: Saturday December 8th, 2007 Location Name: Arno Marris Gallery Address: Scannlon Road City, ST: Westfield, MA Fee: Free
In order to re-route the path of modern art, the artist has developed a system. He uses a book of 1296 images, ideas, and concepts, in order to bring total chance into the configurations. A roulette wheel is then employed to choose objects, which are called tonal values. Size, placement, and intensity are chosen by the wheel. The artist is left only with the task of accurately rendering the choices. Environmental Palatte is an invention, a device which produces a totally unique image each time it is used. It would continue to do this for the next hundred years if the artist continued each day to use it. These claims could be proven in a court of law, if necessary.
The significant value of this process is that the images are sometimes amusing, sometimes startling and consistantly unique. The artist had done extensive exploration into its functions and there is no end in sight.

Sponsoring Group Name: ReconnectUS.org Show Name: EXPERIENCING THE WAR IN IRAQ Submission Due Date: Saturday January 12th, 2008 Submission Fees: None Website:www.reconnectus.org City, ST: Fall River, MA
This multi-media art exhibition, curated by artists, will bring together diverse expressions of the War in Iraq, opening in several venues in Pawtucket and Providence, from March 5 to March 30, 2008. It will then travel to Fall River in April and to Boston in May.
In these times of extreme political division and inadequate or biased media coverage, the exhibition will engage the American public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. Through the universal language of art, the exhibition seeks to give a human face to the complex conflict in Iraq and to engage those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the fearsome reality of the war. We ask the questions: What does it mean to experience this war firsthand, in combat, or as an Iraqi civilian? What does it mean to experience it from a distance, or on television? How can we in America reconnect to the reality of war? Are there shared visions of peace despite cultural and religious differences? The work will be selected purely on artistic merit and look to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics.
The call goes out to both soldiers and civilians for video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. The show will open simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory), Machines With Magnets, Blackstone Valley Visitors Center, AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema, in Pawtucket and Providence, RI.
