Ready. Set. Show! Late fall is a busy time for artists and art lovers. Many of us are fresh from a lazy summer and somewhat productive early autumn. Now it's time to put those freshly created pieces up for sale and smile anxiously as people stop to peer at the work and the price tag. For gift givers, now's the time to find that perfect decorative element for their own home or to give as gifts. The clocks have been turned back and we've gotten our first deluge of chilly rain, so the psychology is unmistakable....the holidays are verrrry near. So slip on those jackets and come see this week's offerings of art, including a Wednesday opening of new works by Sherid Adams at Westfield State College, Friday's Arts Night Out in Northampton and Saturday's always-ecle

In my earliest recollections I have always wanted to paint. I saw myself as a painter foremost to anything else. This sounds so clichè. I have read other artists statements and many say the same thing. As I reached a landmark birthday in 2005, I realized my aspirations are still the same as they were when I was young. My painting has lead me into many directions, and journeys, and it has enriched my life.
The challenge I find in my own landscape painting is learning to see and interpret my own feelings and profound appreciation for nature. I constantly struggle to transcend the material and go beyond the painted surface image.
It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.

Intimate Immensities -- paintings by Marlene Rye.
Travel in your mind back to a time as a child when you were in the "wilderness": backyard, vacant lot, roadside, field, or forest. Remember how the world looked as you crawled through the grass, each individual blade becoming a towering tree, rocks transformed into mountains. Visualize looking through the brambles and thickets of your backyard and feeling the enormity of that space juxtaposed with the closeness of the surrounding branches. See a field, feel the openness of the air and the closeness of the warm ground beneath, expanding and contracting the space at the same time. These sensations are at the heart of my work.

Born and raised in Central Minnesota, Aric Bieganek grew up infused
with the belief that music can both tell stories and inspire personal
and social change. His perspective and his songs - from the
introspectively placid to the passionately outspoken - all embody
this belief, just as they have since he was a little boy playing his
first plastic guitar. Although Aric has traveled as far east as Japan,
as far north as Iceland, and across the United States in his trusty
Ford, his connection to his roots is evident in all the poetry and
fervor of his songwriting.

These works represent the past three years of taking as many pictures as possible when the opportunities arose. As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc.
Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting.
Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much.

'I reflect with my art the colors of a universe in constant motion'
Viviana Puello grew up on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and studied amongst the bohemian community of her small seaside village. When the political situation became intolerable, she immigrated to New York City, where she could paint, uninhibited from the social and political stigmas of traditional society. Puello's large abstract oil paintings are full of life with vibrant colors influenced by her passionate Latin background.
Viviana Puello states, "I'm living my dream and it is real. Those who saw me growing up and know my passion for art now see me with different eyes. I leave a piece of my soul in every painting. A thirsty soul always looking for answers. A dreamer who wants to change the world."
Puello has been actively exhibiting in New York City, Quebec and Saratoga Springs and was a blue ribbon recipient at the 2006 Saratoga Art's Center.

In my Quantiference work, I use an emotion that I cannot understand or handle, and using a visual language of pseudo-math and symbols, create something beautiful that can perhaps give me insight into the original feeling. I do not expect people to look at my work and understand what I am feeling. I rely on my artistic skills to create something that is visually appealing and compelling to the point where understanding the meaning is secondary. The art becomes an independent object of the emotions behind it.
My pleasure in creating these pieces comes from working with that tension between maintaining the imagery and creating a work that is pleasing or exciting to anyone who sees it.

Equine Art by Barbara Widmann
Horse paintings that flow with color and life; inspire energy, power, illustrate beauty, and the elegance of horses are evident in Barbara's art. Mixing painting with a love for horses, Barbara reveals the special personality and spirit of each individual horse. Growing up around horses she developed a strong sense of the anatomy, personality, and spirit of the horse. Barbara has an illustration degree from The Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, Colorado, and a graphic design degree from Sage College in Albany, New York. Currently, Barbara's art can be seen on the cover of Washington Thoroughbred 2007 Summer Yearling Edition magazine and at Union Gables in Saratoga, New York. 'Zhem's artwork is primarily land and water scapes, taken from the New
England countryside and coastline. I would consider Zhem a nature
artist. Some of his most inspiring works are of the coast of Maine,
images based in three media, in realistic colour, startling outlines,
and framed into wood he cut and hewed by hand, keeping in mind
conservation and sustainable forestry practices. Zhem works in pen and
ink with coloured pencil overlay; papercuttings; and pastel. He takes
a photograph or direct image and presents it using the three different
media. Zhem also has collected native northern red cedar to make
frames for his artworks, further demonstrating his committment to
preserving nature and the environments he draws from. Zhem is a unique
artist who works with nature in all it's beauty.'

Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function. These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce. These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as evident in the surface of these prints.
Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina.
Artist:Michael MacTavish Event: Art Walk Easthampton Reception: Saturday November 10th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM Location Name: Manhan Cafe Address: 72 Union St City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:http://www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org
Michael MacTavish is a Contemporary Impressionist painter with a love for bold color and energetic knife and brush strokes. Realism is the map into MacTavish's painting, a voyage of abstract delights and lively surface textures.
Michael paints enthusiastically from the heart, completing each work while the paint is still wet, a method known as "alla prima."
"I love to paint outside. The changing weather and light encourages a spontaneous and fresh approach to the work. Observing nature directly builds a deep understanding of the visual world."
"I also love to paint in the studio. Often I will develop a painting done outdoors into a larger work done in the studio. I'll scan paintings completed outdoors and photographs into my computer, make adjustments and paint from the monitor. I can change the values, colors and shapes to be more like how I remember them, or how I wish them to be."
"Doug's (Manhan Cafe) coffee has had a significant influence in the energy found in some of my paintings. If I didn't have a cup of his coffee in one hand, I would most likely paint with both hands."
Painting full time in New England (spring, summer & fall) and the Southwest (winter), Michael shares a home and studio in both areas with his wife, Denise. You can find print reproductions of some of MacTavish's paintings at the Manhan Cafe from November 1st to the 28th.

Many of her paintings use the objects in the still life to portray a moment in time or an idyllic setting. Jane, the current president of the Holyoke Art League, is the winner of numerous awards. She paints, publishes, and teaches oil painting, design, color theory and drawing.

By having the ability to exactly select the kind of personality, and by freeing himself of the constraints associated with achieving a "true likeness", Luzuriaga is able to create images which enhance and sometimes exaggerate certain features of the subject.
Paintings By Deborah Rubin On Display At The Grubbs Gallery
Artist:Deborah Rubin Event: Big Paintings by Deborah Rubin on display at the Grubbs Gallery Start Date: Thursday November 1st, 2007 End Date: Friday November 30th, 2007 Location Name: The Williston Northampton School in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center Address: 19 Payson Avenue City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:www.williston.com Fee: 0
The Williston Northampton School presents Deborah Rubin's Big Paintings, on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery November 1-30, 2007. An artist's reception will be held in the gallery on November 4, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Deborah Rubin has been pushing the boundaries of photo-realism and hyper-realism since the mid 1970s with an eye on nature and architecture. She paints in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. Born in Chicago in 1948, Rubin holds a BFA from the University of Illinois. She currently lives in Western Massachusetts.
"My work can be highly realistic, with every detail present, but at the same time the close-ups of the natural world become almost abstract in their patterns. The more I look at paint, the more I know, and the more intimate I become with the subject. This 'looking' is the most important and interesting process in my work. It is the art of seeing, and I carry it wherever I go," says Rubin.
Her work has shown nationally in many group and solo shows. She has shown extensively throughout Western Massachusetts including at R. Michelson Galleries of Northampton and Amherst.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place in the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online at http://www.williston.com. For more information, please call (413) 529-3000.

"I Just Wanted To Be Frank About The Whole Weird Phenomenon"
Artist:Johanna Walker Event: Anatomy of a Yell Start Date: Friday November 9th, 2007 End Date: Saturday November 10th, 2007 Location Name: APE Thorne's Address: 150 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Website:www.zanyangels.com/performanceartfestival2007 Fee: $12 general/$10 students
When a trusted mentor asked, "What are you obsessed with?" Johanna Walker was embarrassed to admit that "it wasn't ending the war or saving the planet or revealing the truth of some moment in history. It was really just that old thing about finding my Dreamguy."
The Zany Angels Performance Art Festival will showcase Walker's highly physical, compassionate, evocative result of mining that obsession. "Anatomy of a Yell: one woman's search for true love and the pineapples she devours along the way," is a one-woman romp through the crazy landscape of internet dating, empowered single-hood, and deflecting the agenda of an older generation. Onstage, Walker embodies the men she dated and interviewed, flirts with her laptop, argues with her Mom over coffee, explores an Alice-in-Wonderland mystery room, attacks a papaya with a very big knife, and dances with her suitcase in frenzied preparation for a hot date.
Walker built the piece in collaboration with International Theater Collective's Lizi Watt, who describes working with solo performers as "making an incision into the performer and then helping them yank out their own guts." Leigh Fondakowski, head writer for Tectonic Theater Company's Pulitzer Prize winning play, "The Laramie Project," provided dramaturgical support.
With stories of sexy emails and images from her childhood bedroom, giggles, guffaws, cheers and tears came from the nearly sold out audiences at the Boulder International Fringe Festival this August.

In order to re-route the path of modern art, the artist has developed a system. He uses a book of 1296 images, ideas, and concepts, in order to bring total chance into the configurations. A roulette wheel is then employed to choose objects, which are called tonal values. Size, placement, and intensity are chosen by the wheel. The artist is left only with the task of accurately rendering the choices. Environmental Palatte is an invention, a device which produces a totally unique image each time it is used. It would continue to do this for the next hundred years if the artist continued each day to use it. These claims could be proven in a court of law, if necessary.
The significant value of this process is that the images are sometimes amusing, sometimes startling and consistantly unique. The artist had done extensive exploration into its functions and there is no end in sight.

Sponsoring Group Name: ReconnectUS.org Show Name: EXPERIENCING THE WAR IN IRAQ Submission Due Date: Saturday January 12th, 2008 Submission Fees: None Website:www.reconnectus.org City, ST: Fall River, MA
This multi-media art exhibition, curated by artists, will bring together diverse expressions of the War in Iraq, opening in several venues in Pawtucket and Providence, from March 5 to March 30, 2008. It will then travel to Fall River in April and to Boston in May.
In these times of extreme political division and inadequate or biased media coverage, the exhibition will engage the American public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. Through the universal language of art, the exhibition seeks to give a human face to
the complex conflict in Iraq and to engage those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the fearsome reality of the war. We ask the questions: What does it mean to experience this war firsthand, in combat, or as an Iraqi
civilian? What does it mean to experience it from a distance, or on television? How can we in America reconnect to the reality of war? Are there shared visions of peace despite cultural and religious differences? The work will be selected
purely on artistic merit and look to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics.
The call goes out to both soldiers and civilians for video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. The show will open simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory), Machines With Magnets, Blackstone Valley Visitors Center, AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema, in Pawtucket and Providence, RI.
