GOING INTERNATIONAL
It's a small world after all. My inbox, like yours, gets a lot of SPAM. It's the usual stuff selling cures for erectile dysfunction, money-making schemes from the widows of former African dignitaries, deals on small stuffed animals and personalized pens. Lately, though, I don't even understand what they're trying to sell me. Messages in Chinese and Russian have started pouring in. Most are nicely formatted with lots of bright colors for backgrounds and fonts. And in a strange way, when you can't read the language, it feels more like a puzzling art project than an insulting intrusion. A cryptic message with an aftertaste of curiosity. They they get deleted alongside their English pitching comrades, but I'm left wondering what they wanted and why someone with an Art Walk email address would be of interest to the Russians. Perhaps it's a sign of growing faux fame or perhaps I'm been swapped and sold on the international market. Whatever the case, it's onto Mockba!

Amherst Exhibits/Events
An Exhibition Of Artists' Book Works At Amherst Books.
Event: Titles
Start Date: Wednesday October 24th, 2007
End Date: Sunday November 25th, 2007
Location Name: Amherst Books
Address: 8 Main Street
City, ST: Amherst, MA
Website: www.umass.edu/fac/calendar/universitygallery/events/Titles.html
Fee: free
The University Gallery, in collaboration with Amherst Books, is sponsoring Titles, an itinerant exhibition that is designed to adapt and travel to bookstores in different cities. Many prominent and renouned area artists, designers and architects have created book works or related artworks that have a relation to the chosen title found under a category in the bookstore (i.e. literature, children's books, art, etc.) and are placed in a slot on the shelf according to alphabetical ordering. A list will be provided to the visitors to locate the works.

This project reflects the "curatorial" interest of the WayUpWayDown collective (comprising Toronto artists Sunny Kerr, Yam Lau, Tania Ursomarzo) to set in motion itinerant exhibition structures and maneuvers. It is the mandate of the collective to facilitate tenuous and fluid relations between exhibitions, artworks, and communities.

The first exhibition of Titles opened in June 2007 at Balfour Books in Toronto with 28 participating artists. Its second venue will be at Amherst Books, and will then travel to Montreal later in this fall. It blurs the boundaries between museums, commercial art dealers, curators' voices, art making, as well as art displaying.

Titles coincides with BookMarks: A Celebration of the Art of the Book, a region-wide celebration of the book sponsored by Museums10.

In my earliest recollections I have always wanted to paint. I saw myself as a painter foremost to anything else. This sounds so clichè. I have read other artists statements and many say the same thing. As I reached a landmark birthday in 2005, I realized my aspirations are still the same as they were when I was young. My painting has lead me into many directions, and journeys, and it has enriched my life.

The challenge I find in my own landscape painting is learning to see and interpret my own feelings and profound appreciation for nature. I constantly struggle to transcend the material and go beyond the painted surface image.

It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.

Intimate Immensities -- paintings by Marlene Rye.

Travel in your mind back to a time as a child when you were in the "wilderness": backyard, vacant lot, roadside, field, or forest. Remember how the world looked as you crawled through the grass, each individual blade becoming a towering tree, rocks transformed into mountains. Visualize looking through the brambles and thickets of your backyard and feeling the enormity of that space juxtaposed with the closeness of the surrounding branches. See a field, feel the openness of the air and the closeness of the warm ground beneath, expanding and contracting the space at the same time. These sensations are at the heart of my work.

These works represent the past three years of taking as many pictures as possible when the opportunities arose. As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc.

Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting.

Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much.

'I reflect with my art the colors of a universe in constant motion'

Viviana Puello grew up on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and studied amongst the bohemian community of her small seaside village. When the political situation became intolerable, she immigrated to New York City, where she could paint, uninhibited from the social and political stigmas of traditional society. Puello's large abstract oil paintings are full of life with vibrant colors influenced by her passionate Latin background.

Viviana Puello states, "I'm living my dream and it is real. Those who saw me growing up and know my passion for art now see me with different eyes. I leave a piece of my soul in every painting. A thirsty soul always looking for answers. A dreamer who wants to change the world."

Puello has been actively exhibiting in New York City, Quebec and Saratoga Springs and was a blue ribbon recipient at the 2006 Saratoga Art's Center.

In my Quantiference work, I use an emotion that I cannot understand or handle, and using a visual language of pseudo-math and symbols, create something beautiful that can perhaps give me insight into the original feeling. I do not expect people to look at my work and understand what I am feeling. I rely on my artistic skills to create something that is visually appealing and compelling to the point where understanding the meaning is secondary. The art becomes an independent object of the emotions behind it.

My pleasure in creating these pieces comes from working with that tension between maintaining the imagery and creating a work that is pleasing or exciting to anyone who sees it.

Cara Taylor has been designing and crocheting handbags out of recycled plastic for several years now. Friends and family (and strangers) from all over the country collect and send plastic bags which she then cuts up and 'loops' into yarn. A common material, harmful to the environment in countless ways, is transformed (or trash-formed) into an object that is fashionable and durable for everyday use. Each bag is one-of-a-kind.

Michael MacTavish is a Contemporary Impressionist painter with a love for bold color and energetic knife and brush strokes. Realism is the map into MacTavish's painting, a voyage of abstract delights and lively surface textures.

Michael paints enthusiastically from the heart, completing each work while the paint is still wet, a method known as "alla prima."

"I love to paint outside. The changing weather and light encourages a spontaneous and fresh approach to the work. Observing nature directly builds a deep understanding of the visual world."

"I also love to paint in the studio. Often I will develop a painting done outdoors into a larger work done in the studio. I'll scan paintings completed outdoors and photographs into my computer, make adjustments and paint from the monitor. I can change the values, colors and shapes to be more like how I remember them, or how I wish them to be."

"Doug's (Manhan Cafe) coffee has had a significant influence in the energy found in some of my paintings. If I didn't have a cup of his coffee in one hand, I would most likely paint with both hands."

Painting full time in New England (spring, summer & fall) and the Southwest (winter), Michael shares a home and studio in both areas with his wife, Denise. You can find print reproductions of some of MacTavish's paintings at the Manhan Cafe from November 1st to the 28th.

The Lathrop Community Gallery is pleased to present a collection of oil paintings by Jane Barrientos for the month of November. Her favorite genre is Still Life, including floral and Trompe L'Oeil. Her objective is to make the objects appear more lively than photographs. To achieve this, Jane experiments with sunlight and artificial light in her work. Many of her paintings use the objects in the still life to portray a moment in time or an idyllic setting. Jane, the current president of the Holyoke Art League, is the winner of numerous awards. She paints, publishes, and teaches oil painting, design, color theory and drawing.
The gallery is open daily for your viewing pleasure.

Saturday, November 10, 5 to 8pm.

A new show of paintings called "Anonymous Portraits" will open at "STUDIO 252" in the Eastworks building in Easthampton.

The paintings by Denis Luzuriaga are portraits of mostly random images culled from the internet. By having the ability to exactly select the kind of personality, and by freeing himself of the constraints associated with achieving a "true likeness", Luzuriaga is able to create images which enhance and sometimes exaggerate certain features of the subject.

Experiencing The War In Iraq
Sponsoring Group Name: ReconnectUS.org
Show Name: EXPERIENCING THE WAR IN IRAQ
Submission Due Date: Saturday January 12th, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.reconnectus.org
City, ST: Fall River, MA
This multi-media art exhibition, curated by artists, will bring together diverse expressions of the War in Iraq, opening in several venues in Pawtucket and Providence, from March 5 to March 30, 2008. It will then travel to Fall River in April and to Boston in May.

In these times of extreme political division and inadequate or biased media coverage, the exhibition will engage the American public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. Through the universal language of art, the exhibition seeks to give a human face to
the complex conflict in Iraq and to engage those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the fearsome reality of the war. We ask the questions: What does it mean to experience this war firsthand, in combat, or as an Iraqi
civilian? What does it mean to experience it from a distance, or on television? How can we in America reconnect to the reality of war? Are there shared visions of peace despite cultural and religious differences? The work will be selected
purely on artistic merit and look to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics.

The call goes out to both soldiers and civilians for video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. The show will open simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory), Machines With Magnets, Blackstone Valley Visitors Center, AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema, in Pawtucket and Providence, RI.
