I love this warm weather and the freedom to explore than comes with it. It's a treat to take in the jewel-like colors of the leaves bundled up in nothing more than a t-shirt and jeans. This past weekend we took a daytrip to Old Mystic Seaport, checking out the hues a little further south of the Pioneer Valley and discovering that a port can be a very human-sized place. Growing up in Houston, a port came to mean a massive, impersonal place with the constant danger than you might be mashed by an 18-wheeler backing up, a rail car switching tracks or squished like a bug by a multi-ton pallet swinging overhead from one of the cranes. The environment was so chaoti
c that there was a special observation area and it was blocks away from the action for safety. Ports didn't seem real. Even in California the ports you can actually enter are filled with retail shops or where you get on for the dinner cruise.
But the Old Mystic Seaport is a very personable place filled with the historical lore, but also still active with today's private craft docked next to the display ships. Broken up oyster shells crunch beneath the feet. The water laps at the dock and bounces the light along the ships' nameplates. The maple trees are packed with colors from bright lime to deep plum. Happy dogs wag and walk with their companions. Climbing aboard tall ships like the Charles W. Morgan or the Joseph Conrad gives you a sense of how these mighty craft were so very small compared to today's vessels. And going below reminds you of how tall and big we've become in the last few hundred years, too. I can't imagine - actually I can but prefer not to - what life what life would be like on a pitching ship, packed like sardines with smelly bunkmates and the air even heavier from the odor of rendering whale blubber or oil lights. Whew, let me back on shore!
If you haven't visited Old Mystic (www.mysticseaport.org), it's absolutely worth the two-hour drive, especially now with the autumn colors and very sparse crowds. Closer to home there's leafy color all around and a great exhibit, "Jewels in the Water," by Leslie Cerier at the Burnett Gallery in Amherst's Jones Library. Her photography draws on a passion about light, water and landscapes. So wherever your port of call, savor it all.

The University Gallery, in collaboration with Amherst Books, will sponsor Titles, an itinerant exhibition that is designed to adapt and travel to bookstores in different cities. This project reflects the "curatorial" interest of the WayUpWayDown collective (comprising Toronto artists Sunny Kerr, Yam Lau, Tania Ursomarzo) to set in motion itinerant exhibition structures and maneuvers.
Many area artists, designers and architects, such as Robert Cumming, Young Min Moon, Stephen Petegorsky, Karen Dolmanisth, and Sigrid Miller Pollin amongst others, have been invited to produce book works or related artworks that have a relation to the chosen title found under a category in the bookstore (i.e. literature, children's books, art, etc.) and are placed in a slot on the shelf according to alphabetical ordering. A list will be provided to the visitors to locate the works.
The first exhibition of Titles opened in June 2007 at Balfour Books in Toronto with 28 participating artists. Its second venue will be at Amherst Books, and will then travel to Montreal later in this fall. This project reflects the "curatorial" interest of the WayUpWayDown collective to set in motion itinerant exhibition structures and maneuvers. It is the mandate of the collective to facilitate tenuous and fluid relations between exhibitions, artworks, and communities.
Titles is planned to coincide with BookMarks: A Celebration of the Art of the Book, a region-wide celebration of the book sponsored by Muse

Light. Water. Transformation.
When I take my camera into the woods, I feel my connection with the forest. It's like meditating - a way to get back to my own true nature.
The sun calls me to a particular spot and I click the shutter when I see that rich, afternoon light...dancing light.
Most of these photographs are taken within walking distance of my Western Massachusetts home. They are a celebration of New England seen through the eye of my heart.
My work is about inspiration and healing - about being so present in the moment that everything vibrates and shines. These photographs are about sun light.
I see perfection in nature - patterns - artistic jewels that reveal themselves.
My grandmother painted copies of Impressionist paintings by Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Cezanne. Her apartment on the beach was decorated with her beautiful artwork and those paintings live inside of me.
My mother always encouraged me to be original and creative. When I was a little girl, I was given a camera instead of a paintbrush.
Like the Impressionists, I am passionate about light, water and landscapes.
My photography is a reflection of the peaceful energy I find in the woods. Living in the moment, I capture beauty as I click the shutter.
These images can be looked at from different angles. There is no one right way to explore them. Please relax, take your time, have fun. I invite you to look for faces and figures; there are jewels in the water.
When you buy my work, feel free to hang it any way you like.

Artist:Rick Dec Event: Recent Drawings Start Date: Monday October 1st, 2007 End Date: Wednesday October 31st, 2007 Location Name: Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School Address: 19 Payson Avenue City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:www.williston.com Fee: Free
The Williston Northampton School presents Rick Dec's Recent Drawings, on exhibit at the Grubbs Gallery October 1-31, 2007.
Born in Hadley, MA, Rick Dec attended local schools and graduated from Williston Northampton in 1973. He earned a B.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Massachusetts and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Dec then worked in the construction business, eventually becoming co-owner of a large construction company in Northampton. Ten years ago, Rick Dec was inspired to develop a new body of work after attending life-drawing classes.
He says, "I was consumed with a desire to master figure drawing. After I felt I was at a satisfactory point, I began experimenting with overlapping the model's poses on one sheet of paper during three-hour drawing sessions. The drawings pleased me and I developed them further by drawing grids and rectangles over them. I then began to incorporate plants, animals, street signs, and more. I also added abstract elements that weave in and out of the realistic drawings."
Created from 2001 to the present, Dec's recent drawings were made with pencil on paper. His earlier work is composed of line and shading and the more recent work exclusively uses line.
Free and open to the public at the Grubbs Gallery of the Reed Campus Center at The Williston Northampton School. Gallery directions and open hours are available online.
Artist:Chara Reigel Event: Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir Start Date: Friday October 26th, 2007 Reception: Friday October 26th, 2007 @ 8:00 PM End Date: Friday October 26th, 2007 Location Name: APE Thorne's Address: 150 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Website:www.zanyangels.com/performanceartfestival2007 Fee: $12 general/$10 students
Determined to make both socially and personally relevant theater, Chara Riegel set out on a journey to uncover the stories of her childhood in the Lonestar State. Using interviews she conducted with a wide range of Texans, and five original, autobiographical songs, she created "Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir," a provocative one-woman musical that takes a bold look at race, gender, religion, violence, and the president. Reigel used the words of the interviews to create the characters in the piece, while her songs capture some of her own struggles in her relationship with Texas. Audiences received the show with standing ovations last March and this past June at Smith College.
"As a white child growing up in Texas, I was taught it was impolite to notice color or talk about prejudice, sexism, and other forms of oppression. Interviewing Texans about these issues was my way to start talking about the things I wasn't given language for as a child, and to get more intimate with both internalized bias and the deep potential for connection," says Riegel.
Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir will show ONE NIGHT ONLY during this fall's Zany Angel Performance Art Festival: Friday, October 26 at 8pm, at Thorne's APE, 150 Main Street, Northampton. Admission is $12 general/ $10 for students and seniors. Riegel will offer a "talk-back" with the audience after the show. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling 413.586.5553.
Artist:Jen Harmon Event: The Out of Towners Start Date: Saturday October 27th, 2007 Reception: Saturday October 27th, 2007 @ 8:00 PM End Date: Saturday October 27th, 2007 Location Name: APE Thorne's Address: 150 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Website:www.zanyangels.com/performanceartfestival2007 Fee: $12 general/$10 students
Jen Harmon is interested in dance that subverts traditional notions of form and content. "I want art that's unexplainable, art that's poetic or sublingual. I want to experience fleeting tragedies, underlying devotion, instant catastrophe and momentary delight in the deeply physical." The Out of Towners is a shared evening of contemporary performance curated by Harmon that offers the audience just that kind of revealing, ground-breaking work.
The evening will include works by Layard Thompson, Jen Rosenblit, Melinda Buckwalter and Elizabeth Ward. Layard Thompson has spent the last three years adapting solos by choreographer Deborah Hay. In "News," we are invited to deepen our relationship to spacetime through an installation of metronomes, flash photography, and Hay's choreography.
Jen Rosenblit offers a new duet with live accordion and percussion music. Jen graduated from Hampshire College, where her research into the history of the "unconventional" or larger dancing body in modern dance led her to an abstract critique on heaviness in contemporary choreography.
Melinda Buckwalter and the "Sometimes Collective" investigates Indian goddesses, The Mahavidyas, and their contemporary western manifestations by looking at clothes, movement, and place. The work gives homage to these fearsome female energies.
The Out of Towners will show ONE NIGHT ONLY during this fall's Zany Angel Performance Art Festival. Saturday, October 27 at 8pm.

Artists Bid Farewell To Community Performance Space
Event: The Zany Angels Performance Art Festival Start Date: Friday October 26th, 2007 End Date: Sunday November 11th, 2007 Location Name: APE Thorne's Address: 150 Main Street City, ST: Northampton, MA Website:www.performanceartfestival2007.com Fee: $12 general/$10 students
For three weekends this fall, Northampton will be flooded with performances and workshops focusing on performance art. Audiences will immerse themselves in their own creative process, then witness the finely tuned craft of seasoned, professional performers unfold on stage each evening.
"The Zany Angels Performance Art Festival" will take place in the soon-to-be-closing Thorne's APE. "I've been performing in that space for ten years," reports Rythea Lee, festival organizer. "I thought a festival would be a great way to celebrate it. This is fertile ground. It's a chance to light up Northampton with the kind of sophisticated arts it is known for."
Chara Reigel will kick off the festival with her solo show, "Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir" which takes a bold look at race, gender, religion, violence, and the president. "The Out of Towners" is an evening of work by NYC dancers that includes revealing and ground-breaking dances.
The second weekend of the festival showcases The Zany Angels."Crush, Lust and Other Decisions" includes solos by Lee and Rose Oceania, a trio with the newest Angel Patrick Crowley and "Honking Home," a commission from The Dance Generators.
Johanna Walker's "Anatomy of a Yell" is a highly physical, compassionate, evocative one-woman romp through the crazy landscape of internet dating, empowered single-hood and deflecting the agenda of a previous generation.

When a trusted mentor asked, "What are you obsessed with?" Johanna Walker was embarrassed to admit that "it wasn't ending the war or saving the planet or revealing the truth of some moment in history. It was really just that old thing about finding my Dreamguy."
The Zany Angels Performance Art Festival will showcase Walker's highly physical, compassionate, evocative result of mining that obsession. "Anatomy of a Yell: one woman's search for true love and the pineapples she devours along the way," is a one-woman romp through the crazy landscape of internet dating, empowered single-hood, and deflecting the agenda of an older generation. Onstage, Walker embodies the men she dated and interviewed, flirts with her laptop, argues with her Mom over coffee, explores an Alice-in-Wonderland mystery room, attacks a papaya with a very big knife, and dances with her suitcase in frenzied preparation for a hot date.
Walker built the piece in collaboration with International Theater Collective's Lizi Watt, who describes working with solo performers as "making an incision into the performer and then helping them yank out their own guts." Leigh Fondakowski, head writer for Tectonic Theater Company's Pulitzer Prize winning play, "The Laramie Project," provided dramaturgical support.
With stories of sexy emails and images from her childhood bedroom, giggles, guffaws, cheers and tears came from the nearly sold out audiences at the Boulder International Fringe Festival this August.

These images have never been accused of being "cookie cutter" images.

ARTIST STATEMENT by Marty Klein
In August 2006, I devoted a day to deep self-reflection. Consequently...an epiphany emerged. It connected, with a fresh perspective, some important elements of my life, such as my creativity, my decades of amateur photography, my knowledge of and connection to nature (Green World), and my passion for sharing that with others. A resolve to devote myself to exploring the potential of my best images and the desire to re-kindle my creative side emerged, as did a sleepless night fueled by the clarity of my insight.
A few weeks later, as an experiment, I used my flatbed scanner as my camera and 3-dimensional natural objects (many locally gathered) as my subjects. The resulting images revealed details in an exciting way, different than what I am able to achieve with my camera. In the ensuing months, I have worked to develop and refine this technique. I call it scanography. Following a scan, I spend many hours refining the image in my "digital darkroom," the majority of those spent removing the dust and flotsam that inevitably accompany my subjects. Essences, the glories of nature, the familiar and the not-so-familiar define my work.
This is an ongoing learning process for me. Fueled by my profound connection to "green world," and an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity, nature’s marvels and mysteries inspire me daily. The natural world is my sanctuary...a place for refuge and discovery.
