DOWN IN THE VALLEY
"Down in the valley, valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow, dear, hear the wind blow
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow."

There may be some wind and perhaps some rain, but heading outside will be worthwhile this week. From BookMark-related events in Amherst to Friday's "Arts Night Out" in Northampton to Saturday's Art Walk Easthampton, there's an amazing amount to see and do.

"Roses love sunshine violets love dew
Angels in heaven know I love you
Know I love you dear know I love you
Angels in heaven know I love you."

So grab a coat or an umbrella too, and head on out there's so much to do. :-) Show your love. Go see art.

Sue Katz and Rebecca Muller share an attraction for time-worn materials. Detritus discarded, lost and eroded by weather and time, these objects are gathered and reused in unexpected ways. "Found" describes this process of discovery and the embrace of fortunate accidents in art.

Sue Katz' mixed-media art of assembled found objects and paint points to her transformational aesthetic – changing used to new, object to surface, incidental to arranged. Gathering her materials through dumpster picking, beach combing, or roaming woods and old industrial landscapes, she is attracted to material with the marks of age and memory. Worn objects with painterly encaustic surfaces provide never-seen-before surprises and find a fitting home in her assemblages of wood, metal, paint and wax.

Rebecca Muller combines a variety of organic and inorganic material in her mixed-media work. She applies dry pigment, pastels, oil stick, acrylic and charcoal to these found objects. Attracted to a gridded form, she often uses wire mesh to create a strong but visually neutral structural element. The wire mesh construction offers the opportunity to see front, inside and behind the object simultaneously. Object and ground relationships shift according to the viewer's vantage point and attention.

Nicholas Hondrogen's Mumonkan series at wünderarts
Nicholas Hondrogen: Mumonkan Series 1996-1998 Artist: Nicholas Hondrogen
Event: Nicholas Hondrogen: Mumonkan Series 1996-1998
Start Date: Saturday October 6th, 2007
End Date: Sunday November 18th, 2007
Location Name: wünderarts
Address: 383 Main Street
City, ST: Amherst, MA
Website: www.wunderarts.com
Fee: Free
wünderarts is pleased to present Nicholas Hondrogen: Mumonkan Series 1996-1998. The exhibition of 21 works is being shown for the first time and has been organized in association with the Nicholas Hondrogen Trust. It runs from October 6 – November 18, 2007.

Nicholas Hondrogen (1952-2007) was a prolific painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. The artist began his career in Paris in the early 1970s and achieved wide recognition in Europe. He enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions and was collected by both individuals and notable public institutions. He returned to the U.S. in the early 1980s, settling in New York City and refocused his art toward filmmaking. Hondrogen's award-winning 1997 film, Perfect Moment, created after his move to Los Angeles, documents the life-defining recollections of a wide-range of individuals both famous and unknown. Hondrogen was the recipient of two Pollack-Krasner grants in 2000 and 2005.

The series is based on the Zen concepts of Mumonkan or the "gateless gate." Beginning in 1996 and continuing through 2000, Hondrogen painted over one hundred works on translucent mylar. The artist's original intention was to photograph each painting and then enlarge them on Duratrans to the same size of the originals. These images would then be displayed on lightboxes. The paintings were to be destroyed with the reproductions serving as the "original." However, the work was never destroyed and reproduced as planned. In the spirit of the artist's original intent, a reproduction of the painting "Negotiating/Desperation" will be presented in this manner. The corresponding original will also be on view.

Artist Viviana Puello presents 'Colors In My Universe : Windows'

"I'm so alive! There's this passion inside. It's like a burning fire that cannot be quenched. I fight, but then I realize that pieces of my soul are being implanted on these vivid images of my dreams. I give in with the knowledge that when the time comes to let that eagle in me fly free, these images will remain as silence witnesses of my existence."

Originally from the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, Viviana Puello now maintains her studio in Saratoga Springs, NY where she exhibits extensively. Viviana's passion for life and art are communicated through the colorful abstracts she paints.

I've always been interested in the science of light and moving objects. The universe and it's movements captured my childhood imagination and the more I learned the more fascinated I became. I picked up paper and paint and let my imagination fly. Throughout my art education colors and feelings became meaningful. I fell in love with the fauves and impressionist period. For me, their use of color elicited feelings of time and place. Working in the theater all my life has expanded my palate and offered new opportunities of expressions with dancers and movement. To capture a moving object wasn't as important as capturing the feeling of movement. The dances of life as it were. So it is through time, movement and hues that my photoscapes come alive. I try to capture not only the feeling of movement but the emotion and give it to you, the viewer to touch. -- Jene Youtt

Like most artists, I knew at a very young age, I wanted to draw comics for a living. At age 6, I would amuse my family & friends by holding a crayon box up to my eyes, (pretending it was a camera), I'd say 'click' then I'd duck down behind the sofa and draw their caricatures as fast as I can, and charged .10 cents for each one. I made $1.80 that summer. I knew then, I wanted to be a professional cartoonist.

Long story short - I currently work for a Connecticut newspaper drawing Editorial Cartoons. I also do some freelance Illustration, and an occasional gig drawing caricatures. I grew up and currently live in Enfield, CT..... Well...., that's not completely true - I just got older in Enfield, but I never grew up.

During the Ark Walk event, I will be displaying my caricature artwork as well as drawing live caricatures.

In 2002 I was diagnosed with MS. At first only scribbles filled with pain and fear emerged--until miraculously watercolor flowers began to flow. By expressing my feelings through pictures and words, I was able to soothe and comfort myself. As I continued to express myself through art and language, I felt more and more inspired and alive--making it possible to deal with the pain I was feeling inside my body. Through my then untrained hands, I felt freedom. I believe that anyone is capable of expressing him or herself through art therapy. No art training is necessary, although eventually, I was inspired to take formal art lessons. I will be exhibiting my work at Country Accents by NJB in the Marketplace.

Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function.

These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce.

These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as evident in the surface of these prints.

Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina.

The Truth of the Lone Star State
Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir Artist: Chara Reigel
Event: Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir
Start Date: Friday October 26th, 2007
Reception: Friday October 26th, 2007 @ 8:00 PM
End Date: Friday October 26th, 2007
Location Name: APE Thorne's
Address: 150 Main Street
City, ST: Northampton, MA
Website: www.performanceartfestival2007.com
Fee: $12 general/$10 students
Determined to make both socially and personally relevant theater, Chara Riegel set out on a journey to uncover the stories of her childhood in the Lonestar State. Using interviews she conducted with a wide range of Texans, and five original, autobiographical songs, she created "Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir," a provocative one-woman musical that takes a bold look at race, gender, religion, violence, and the president. Reigel used the words of the interviews to create the characters in the piece, while her songs capture some of her own struggles in her relationship with Texas. Audiences received the show with standing ovations last March and this past June at Smith College.

"As a white child growing up in Texas, I was taught it was impolite to notice color or talk about prejudice, sexism, and other forms of oppression. Interviewing Texans about these issues was my way to start talking about the things I wasn't given language for as a child, and to get more intimate with both internalized bias and the deep potential for connection," says Riegel.

Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir will show ONE NIGHT ONLY during this fall's Zany Angel Performance Art Festival: Friday, October 26 at 8pm, at Thorne's APE, 150 Main Street, Northampton. Admission is $12 general/ $10 for students and seniors. Riegel will offer a "talk-back" with the audience after the show. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling 413.586.5553.

"The Out of Towners"
The Out of Towners Artist: Jen Harmon
Event: The Out of Towners
Start Date: Saturday October 27th, 2007
Reception: Saturday October 27th, 2007 @ 8:00 PM
End Date: Saturday October 27th, 2007
Location Name: APE Thorne's
Address: 150 Main Street
City, ST: Northampton, MA
Website: www.performanceartfestival2007.com
Fee: $12 general/$10 students
Jen Harmon is interested in dance that subverts traditional notions of form and content. "I want art that's unexplainable, art that's poetic or sublingual. I want to experience fleeting tragedies, underlying devotion, instant catastrophe and momentary delight in the deeply physical." The Out of Towners is a shared evening of contemporary performance curated by Harmon that offers the audience just that kind of revealing, ground-breaking work.

The evening will include works by Layard Thompson, Jen Rosenblit, Melinda Buckwalter and Elizabeth Ward. Layard Thompson has spent the last three years adapting solos by choreographer Deborah Hay. In "News," we are invited to deepen our relationship to spacetime through an installation of metronomes, flash photography, and Hay's choreography.

Jen Rosenblit offers a new duet with live accordion and percussion music. Jen graduated from Hampshire College, where her research into the history of the "unconventional" or larger dancing body in modern dance led her to an abstract critique on heaviness in contemporary choreography.

Melinda Buckwalter and the "Sometimes Collective" investigates Indian goddesses, The Mahavidyas, and their contemporary western manifestations by looking at clothes, movement, and place. The work gives homage to these fearsome female energies.

The Out of Towners will show ONE NIGHT ONLY during this fall's Zany Angel Performance Art Festival. Saturday, October 27 at 8pm.

City, ST: Northampton, MA

For three weekends this fall, Northampton will be flooded with performances and workshops focusing on performance art. Audiences will immerse themselves in their own creative process, then witness the finely tuned craft of seasoned, professional performers unfold on stage each evening.

"The Zany Angels Performance Art Festival" will take place in the soon-to-be-closing Thorne's APE. "I've been performing in that space for ten years," reports Rythea Lee, festival organizer. "I thought a festival would be a great way to celebrate it. This is fertile ground. It's a chance to light up Northampton with the kind of sophisticated arts it is known for."

Chara Reigel will kick off the festival with her solo show, "Cowgirl Expatriate: A Texas Memoir" which takes a bold look at race, gender, religion, violence, and the president. "The Out of Towners" is an evening of work by NYC dancers that includes revealing and ground-breaking dances.

The second weekend of the festival showcases The Zany Angels."Crush, Lust and Other Decisions" includes solos by Lee and Rose Oceania, a trio with the newest Angel Patrick Crowley and "Honking Home," a commission from The Dance Generators.

Johanna Walker's "Anatomy of a Yell" is a highly physical, compassionate, evocative one-woman romp through the crazy landscape of internet dating, empowered single-hood and deflecting the agenda of a previous generation.

The Hadley Cultural Council will also entertain funding proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, a ticket subsidy program for school-aged children. This year, the Hadley Cultural Council will distribute about $4000.00 in grants.
