| Three WMDs Found in Northampton |
 | The hunt for WMDs is over. If only he'd looked in the right place. ;-)
Wire Monkey Dance, a Holyoke group that creates physical dance installations, spun, swung and played on steel scaffolding to the delight of the crowd gathered in Northampton. Saturday's performance by several of the dancers was one of a series of roving outdoor movements in advance of the troupe's upcoming piece, "Open Secret."
The new work debuts October 12th at Tree Studio with performances on three successive weekends. Tickets are $12-$17. Spin around and scroll down for more information.

This week was a reminder of the roller coaster nature of life. On Wednesday my partner of 25 yers and I got married (yeah Massachusetts!). It's a great feeling. Then on Saturday we learned of some terrible news.
The Valley lost a legend Saturday with the passing of Frank Lucchesi. He was a vital part of the local music scene, helping hundreds of performers repair their prized string instruments. His knowledge of and passion for music encouraged new and experienced musicians alike. We mourn his passing and extend our condolences to his wife, Fran, and his family.
(Bottom photo: Frank Lucchesi with customer)
Some days the roller coaster moves upward at a steady clicky-clack rate where you can see far ahead. Sometimes you plunge and scream. This week feels like the loopty-loop. So grab ahold, eat, drink and be merry ...

| October exhibition at Gallery A3 |
|
Artist: Sue Katz, Rebecca Muller Event: Found: Sue Katz & Rebecca Muller Start Date: Thursday October 4th, 2007 Reception: Thursday October 4th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Saturday October 27th, 2007 Location Name: Gallery A3 Address: 28 Amity Street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website: www.gallerya3.com Fee: free |
Sue Katz and Rebecca Muller share an attraction for time-worn materials. Detritus discarded, lost and eroded by weather and time, these objects are gathered and reused in unexpected ways. "Found" describes this process of discovery and the embrace of fortunate accidents in art.
Sue Katz' mixed-media art of assembled found objects and paint points to her transformational aesthetic – changing used to new, object to surface, incidental to arranged. Gathering her materials through dumpster picking, beach combing, or roaming woods and old industrial landscapes, she is attracted to material with the marks of age and memory. Worn objects with painterly encaustic surfaces provide never-seen-before surprises and find a fitting home in her assemblages of wood, metal, paint and wax.
Rebecca Muller combines a variety of organic and inorganic material in her mixed-media work. She applies dry pigment, pastels, oil stick, acrylic and charcoal to these found objects. Attracted to a gridded form, she often uses wire mesh to create a strong but visually neutral structural element. The wire mesh construction offers the opportunity to see front, inside and behind the object simultaneously. Object and ground relationships shift according to the viewer's vantage point and attention.

| Nicholas Hondrogen's Mumonkan series to Debut at wünderarts Oct. 6 |
|
Artist: Nicholas Hondrogen Event: Nicholas Hondrogen: Mumonkan Series 1996-1998 Start Date: Saturday October 6th, 2007 Reception: Saturday October 6th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Sunday November 18th, 2007 Location Name: wünderarts Address: 383 Main Street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website: www.wunderarts.com Fee: Free |
wünderarts is pleased to present Nicholas Hondrogen: Mumonkan Series 1996-1998. The exhibition of 21 works is being shown for the first time and has been organized in association with the Nicholas Hondrogen Trust. It runs from October 6 – November 18, 2007.
Nicholas Hondrogen (1952-2007) was a prolific painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. The artist began his career in Paris in the early 1970s and achieved wide recognition in Europe. He enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions and was collected by both individuals and notable public institutions. He returned to the U.S. in the early 1980s, settling in New York City and refocused his art toward filmmaking. Hondrogen's award-winning 1997 film, Perfect Moment, created after his move to Los Angeles, documents the life-defining recollections of a wide-range of individuals both famous and unknown. Hondrogen was the recipient of two Pollack-Krasner grants in 2000 and 2005.
The series is based on the Zen concepts of Mumonkan or the "gateless gate." Beginning in 1996 and continuing through 2000, Hondrogen painted over one hundred works on translucent mylar. The artist's original intention was to photograph each painting and then enlarge them on Duratrans to the same size of the originals. These images would then be displayed on lightboxes. The paintings were to be destroyed with the reproductions serving as the "original." However, the work was never destroyed and reproduced as planned. In the spirit of the artist's original intent, a reproduction of the painting "Negotiating/Desperation" will be presented in this manner. The corresponding original will also be on view. |

Artist Viviana Puello presents 'Colors in my universe; windows'
“I’m so alive! There’s this passion inside. It’s like a burning fire that cannot be quenched. I fight, but then I realize that pieces of my soul are being implanted on these vivid images of my dreams. I give in with the knowledge that when the time comes to let that eagle in me fly free, these images will remain as silence witnesses of my existence.”
Originally from the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, Viviana Puello now maintains her studio in Saratoga Springs, NY where she exhibits extensively. Viviana's passion for life and art are communicated through the colorful abstracts she paints.

| I’ve always been interested in the science of light and moving objects. The universe and it’s movements captured my childhood imagination and the more I learned the more fascinated I became. I picked up paper and paint and let my imagination fly. Throughout my art education colors and feelings became meaningful. I fell in love with the fauves and impressionist period. For me, their use of color elicited feelings of time and place. Working in the theater all my life has expanded my palate and offered new opportunities of expressions with dancers and movement. To capture a moving object wasn’t as important as capturing the feeling of movement. The dances of life as it were. So it is through time, movement and hues that my photoscapes come alive. I try to capture not only the feeling of movement but the emotion and give it to you, the viewer to touch. -- Jene Youtt |

Like most artists, I knew at a very young age, I wanted to draw comics for a living. At age 6, I would amuse my family & friends by holding a crayon box up to my eyes, (pretending it was a camera), I'd say 'click' then I'd duck down behind the sofa and draw their caricatures as fast as I can, and charged .10 cents for each one. I made $1.80 that summer. I knew then, I wanted to be a professional cartoonist.
Long story short - I currently work for a Connecticut newspaper drawing Editorial Cartoons. I also do some freelance Illustration, and an occasional gig drawing caricatures. I grew up and currently live in Enfield, CT..... Well...., that's not completely true - I just got older in Enfield, but I never grew up.
During the Ark Walk event, I will be displaying my caricature artwork as well as drawing live caricatures. |

Artist: Hannah Richards Event: Art Walk Easthampton Location Name: Pioneer Arts Center of Easthampton Address: 41 Union St City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website: http://www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org Fee: Free |
Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function.
These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce.
These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as evident in the surface of these prints.
Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina.

| "THE ART OF LEAVING" Film Screening |
Artist: Florin Ion Firimita Event: First Fridays at Gallery 137 Start Date: Friday October 5th, 2007 Reception: Friday October 5th, 2007 @ 7:45 PM End Date: Friday October 5th, 2007 Location Name: Gallery 137 Address: 137 Main Street City, ST: Indian Orchard, MA Website: www.gallery137.org Fee: Suggested donation of $5 |
When Romanian artist Florin Ion Firimita was approached by a filmmaker keen to make a documentary of his life, he said no. Director Brian Kamerzel persisted, eventually convincing Firimita to be the subject of 2003's "The Art of Leaving", which has been selected into seven international film festivals.
Kamerzel had good reason to keep knocking on Firimita's door. Born and raised in communist-occupied Romania during the Cold War, Firimita's artistic life was repressed until he migrated to the U.S. in 1990, then his visual art and writing took flight. His incredible story worked well on the big screen.
Firimita says for many years he was in denial of his poverty-stricken life and that his experiences only emerged in his artwork much later. "A couple of years ago, my experience came out in my art. I was mature enough to face it and understand it," he says. "I can see it affected my work. Seeing both sides, the dark side of the moon, I can see it in what's included and what's left out of my work."
"I didn't want it to be about me, so we came up with idea, 'How do you get to be an artist? What goes into the work?' We talked about elements of art and how you become what you want to be." he says. "It's symbolic, experimental-like my work." Firimita will present this screening of The Art of Leaving as a First Fridays series event, in conjunction with The Feminine Mystique exhibit that features some of his work. |

The Process
I work alone in my studio on a wooden treadle wheel, crafted by Doug Gates in North Carolina. My studio is next to my house. Behind the studio I have a gas kiln where I fire nearly all of my work. I use a dark stoneware clay, and mix up traditional glazes akin to ones developed in Japan and China centuries ago.
I begin nearly every piece on my potters' wheel. I love making a wide variety of different forms: jars, teapots, and vases as well as cups and bowls. Each has a different type of complexity that engages a different part of my imagination.
My Approach
I love making pottery, and feel fortunate to be a potter. I produce each piece myself from start to finish. I make many pots, and every one is individual.
Each time I make a pot I try to endow it with its own life. This life comes from an active balance of the form's tradition, its use, how I made it the previous time, memories of ones I've seen in the past, ideas I've had but never tried, etc. When I make a group of cups, I recall what I was thinking about in the last series of cups, what I liked and didn't like about them, and what I'd like to try. It’s like this with all of my pots. Some forms change quickly and others slowly, but all are in a state of fluidity. My hope as a studio potter is to make the best work I can - and to find out over time what exactly that means.

| Open Call for Artists - $3000 Mural Competition in Easthampton |
|
Sponsoring Group Name: Easthampton City Arts Show Name: Open Call for Artists - $3000 Mural Competition in Easthampton Submission Due Date: Wednesday December 12th, 2007 Submission Fees: none Website: www.EasthamptonCityArts.org City, ST: Easthampton, MA |
Mural will be in the City of Easthampton on a downtown brick wall.
Easthampton City Arts invites artists and/or arts groups to submit a proposal for a mural to be created at 71-77 Cottage Street on the brick wall facing the public parking lot. Funds for the creation of this mural have been awarded Easthampton City Arts by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Local businesses may also help support this project.
What
Design and produce a painted mural with a minimum size of 500 square feet on the brick wall facing the public parking lot at 71-77 Cottage Street and appropriately treat and/or seal the mural for outdoor longevity of a minimum of 10 years. The brick wall will be cleaned and primed by Easthampton City Arts prior to the execution of the mural. The wall is approximately 1,000 square feet.
NOTE: The upper windows may not be painted over. The left bottom window (which is boarded up) is not part of the mural; it will remain advertising space for the adjoining business. The other three boarded up windows may be included in the mural. However, it is possible that they may be transformed into actual windows over the next few years; therefore, any artwork needs to be self-contained with the overall mural able to stand alone if these three sections are replaced with windows.
Content/Theme
The mural should be highly colorful and visible to pedestrians and traffic coming down Cottage Street from the mountain side of Route 141. The theme of the mural is open. The artwork should enhance the building and surrounding environment as well as represent the artistic vitality of Easthampton.
Who
Individual artists, muralists, and art groups who live or work in the Pioneer Valley are encouraged to apply.
Ownership of Image
Easthampton City Arts will jointly own the copyright of the image along with the artist.
Payment
Easthampton City Arts will pay an artist stipend of $3,000, which includes material costs. $500 of the stipend for supplies will be paid upon signed contract; the remainder will be paid upon completion of the mural.
Timeline
All proposals must be received by 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
Notification of results of submissions on Wednesday, December 19, 2007.
Mural, including all sealing, is to be completed by Friday, June 20, 2008.
How
Submit in one package to: Easthampton City Arts, c/o Ellen Koteen, 50 Payson Avenue, Easthampton, MA 01027. (Faxed or email submissions will not be accepted.)
1. A color drawing to scale of your proposed imagery for the mural including text that details materials and weatherproofing that you will be using.
2. Resume(s) and contact information (Artist groups: identify one project manager). Provide your name, address, telephone number, email address and website address if you have a website.
3. Examples of previous work: photos, slides or high-quality color printer outputs (no disc file images).
4. Background information about your art work and/or your group not included above.
5. One page proposal statement about your design (describe design elements) that includes research you may have done on the characteristics of the neighborhood or the city and any input you may have received from local groups or individuals.
6. Self-addressed stamped envelope for return of materials (or they will not be returned!).
Selection
Proposals will be reviewed and chosen by a Jury Committee consisting of members of the Easthampton City Arts Coordinating Committee, the owner(s) of the building, and 2 other artists. The Jury Committee will consider each submission without knowing the name of the individual or group who made the submission.
Easthampton City Arts reserves the right to reject any proposal which, in its judgment, fails to meet the requirements of this Call to Artists or which is incomplete, conditional, or obscure; or which contains irregularities; or in which errors occur; or if determined to be in the best interest of Easthampton City Arts to do so. Easthampton City Arts reserves the right to waive minor discrepancies or permit a proposer to clarify such discrepancies and so conduct discussions with all qualified proposers in any manner necessary to serve the best interests of Easthampton City Arts. Easthampton City Arts may wish to discuss with the artist some revision of the proposed mural before design selection occurs and/or before design is executed.
Artists will be required to enter into a contract with the City of Easthampton to ensure that the project is completed on schedule according to budget and according to the chosen proposal.
Please note: There may be a few local qualified artists willing to assist in the painting process if requested by the artist.

| WFCR's Second Annual Art Mug |
Show Name: WFCR 2nd Annual Art Mug Competition Submission Due Date: Friday October 5th, 2007 Submission Fees: None Website: www.wfcr.org City, ST: Amherst, MA |
WFCR-FM is seeking submissions for the station's 2nd Annual Art Mug. The mug will be made available to WFCR's contributing listeners during on-air fund drives from October 2007 - June 2008. Artists are invited to submit designs by October 5th.
Specifications
WFCR conducts on-air fund drives over a twelve month period - October, March and May. Seasonal subjects or locations specific to western New England and/or public radio are very desirable.
The printing space is 4 1/8 inches high and 8 5/8 inches wide. The image will wrap around the mug so the design should be pleasing for both left handed and right handed drinkers.
The art will be affixed from a paper decal and then kiln-fired to the preserve color. This is a 4-color sublimation process.
Keep it simple! We will be describing the image for listeners as eloquently as we can to conjure a clear picture in their minds. A complicated concept will result in a verbal muddle on the air!
A caption such as "Designed for WFCR by...2007" in the artist's hand is very desirable. It can run along the side of the image or be incorporated into the design.
We request the design be exclusive for WFCR and that we retain the original art for the permanent collection.
The deadline is October 5, 2007. The design will be decided in-house. You can mail your submission to Christopher Daly - 88.5FM/WFCR - Hampshire House - 131 County Cir - Amherst, MA 01003-9257. Artwork can be sent via email to csdaly@wfcr.org |

Smalti is one of the oldest and most original materials of mosaic art. This thick, exquisite glass tile holds light the way no other material can. It is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Venice, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down through the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artists many possibilities to achieve dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day intensive workshop we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6"x6" framed mosaic framed panel. Design, color and composition will also be covered. The class includes tools, handouts, and a beautiful selection of Orsoni Italian smalti. This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced mosaicists who have never worked with smalti. $140 includes materials |
