UNWRAP THE CHEESE
It was a beautiful and busy weekend. On Saturday we went to the Fall Festival and the Historical Society Tag Sale in Easthampton and then on to Deerfield for the Arts and Crafts Fair. Each event had people hoping to sell things. A guy with siding and kitchen cabinets. A woman with quilts. A metal sculptor who makes garden art. Hundreds of booths filled with all sorts of things, typically manned by one person. Different places, different products and different crowds.

And one uniting factor. The busy booths had someone who made eye contact, smiled and made low-key conversation. And the empty booths usually had someone with their face tucked into a book or a corner and looking bored. So which came first? The book or the boredom? I think it's the book.

It's hard to be an artist. The creation process can be intense and personal and sometimes exhausting. When you're finished with a piece, it's tempting to believe you're done. "Dream on, brother. Dream on."

The older I get the more I grudgingly accept that completing a piece is just the beginning. It you want to sell it, you'll need to remain engaged with it. And that means interacting, making that eye contact and being the friendly host at the reception even when you're very shy at heart. It can feel awkward and intimidating, and I worry that many of us become too reclusive for our own economic good and emotional well-being.

I see it at art walks, too. The artist retreating into the safe enclave of friends, ignoring the strangers who might become customers. Tucking one's head into a book, communicating that you don't want to be bothered. Even leaving the de rigueur cheese platter wrapped up in saran during the reception as though it too was an art project. Some skip all that and don't even show up to their show. Each of these things drive people away, which in turns reinforces the artist's perception that the public isn't appreciative.

Maybe they are. maybe they're not. But none of us will know unless we unwrap our cheese. Let's peel if off together.

Painter and photographer Bill Regan received his formal training at Goddard College, where he earned a master's in painting, and at Tufts University by completing a bachelor's degree in fine arts. Much of his artistic motivation, however, comes from the natural world as well as his "deep ambivalence about what the human presence brings to it."

Walter Korzec has been a printmaker, painter, and art educator for more than thirty years. His long career in education began as an art teacher in the Suffield (CT) school system and culminated as professor and program director of Visual Art Certification at Westfield State College. He received his master's in education from the college, and completed his B.A. at the University of Massachusetts.

Ordinary Theater presents 'May Flowers': A World Premier Theater Event
May Flowers Artist: The Ordinary Theater
Event: May Flowers
Start Date: Saturday September 29th, 2007
End Date: Sunday October 14th, 2007
Location Name: Artifacts 20th Century Gallery
Address: 28 N. Maple Street
City, ST: Florence, MA

Fee: $10.00
The Ordinary Theater, the experimental ensemble led by founder/Artistic Director Mitchell Polin and now celebrating its 9th Anniversary, makes its first appearance in Western Massachusetts since shifting their headquarters from New York City to Northampton with a World Premiere performance inspired by the writings of Haruki Murakami and the film work of David Lynch. The Ordinary Theater has performed work nationally and internationally and has gained renown for their re-mixes of classic plays and pieces of literature, cutting-edge multi-media spectacle, avant-garde musical scores, and original theater performances.

May Flowers is inspired by the writings of contemporary Japanese author Haruki Murakami, as well as the psychological film work of David Lynch. May Flowers adapts this lush, mysterious and sometimes terrifying material to the stage. Using the theatre’s signature structure of the theatrical re-mix which combines live and recorded video, a live music score, and texts ranging from the work of Murakami and Lynch to the screenplays of Jean-Luc Goddard, in May Flowers, the ensemble cast of the Ordinary Theater intensely explores the terror of a woman whose husband has gone missing in a surrealistic film noir landscape.

Performances: Sept. 29,30; Oct. 6,7,13,14.

All shows begin at 7 PM and seating is general admission.

The Three Berets are:

LUKE CAVAGNAC – as the king of lowbrow art, Luke has become well known throughout the Pioneer Valley and beyond for his madcap and zany artworks. From his showroom/studio at “Eastworks” in Easthampton, Luke makes paintings that cover the spectrum from abstract to representational, fantastic to mundane, but regardless of subject matter, they share a lust for color and life and humor on a grand scale! He believes anyone who wants one of his paintings should buy one - so they are almost unreasonably inexpensive. He has painted literally thousands of paintings and intends to complete at least one or more for each day of the rest of his life.

GARY HALLGREN –started drawing tanker trucks at the age of three, progressed to airplanes by grade school and was making up his own cartoons shortly thereafter. Today, Gary’s cartoons grace the pages of some of the preeminent publications in the country including; The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week and New York magazine. He has also illustrated the best selling books, “YOU The Owner’s Manual”, “YOU The Smart Patient” and “YOU on a Diet.” Gary is also famous for his contributions to above and underground comics such as Mad Magazine, Marvel Comics, High Times, The Air Pirates Funnies, and Screw magazine.

DEAN NIMMER – is also a well known artist in this area as well as having exhibited his abstract paintings and 1000 drawing project across the US and abroad. Dean will be appearing in this show as his alter ego, “Unique Fredrique from the South of Holyoke.” Painting and sculpting in this new persona, Unique (Dean) creates a new world of bizarre characters, surreal landscapes and political satires that must be seen to be believed!

Gifts of the Soul for Everyday People The Art of Fred Becker and Jean Morrison Becker

Address: 303 Homestead Ave.
City, ST: Holyoke, MA

A small retrospective of sorts, the art works in this show span from the 1930s through the 1980s. The late Fred Becker (husband of) Jean Morrison Becker were both accomplished artists. Fred Becker was a highly recognized artist known for his innovative images and printmaking techniques. Working in oils, color and line figure prominently in Jean Morrison Becker's paintings.

This exhibition is, in part, to celebrate a large donation of paintings and prints by these two important artists to Holyoke Community College from their daughter Carla Becker.

"Both of my parents had a strong belief that art should be available to the people so that they could appreciate and enjoy it in everyday situations. My father was part of the WPA in the 1930's which has been the only federally funded project in the US that supported artists. The artists were encouraged to make images based on everyday life. My father would spend his time engraving his view of New York in restaurants that let him sit for hours and work  (much like people on their computers at coffee bars today). My mother believed art should be out in the public, not shut up in museums. If she had her way she would have had fine art on every billboard around the country."

The Process
I work alone in my studio on a wooden treadle wheel, crafted by Doug Gates in North Carolina. My studio is next to my house. Behind the studio I have a gas kiln where I fire nearly all of my work. I use a dark stoneware clay, and mix up traditional glazes akin to ones developed in Japan and China centuries ago.

I begin nearly every piece on my potters' wheel. I love making a wide variety of different forms: jars, teapots, and vases as well as cups and bowls. Each has a different type of complexity that engages a different part of my imagination.

My Approach
I love making pottery, and feel fortunate to be a potter. I produce each piece myself from start to finish. I make many pots, and every one is individual.

Each time I make a pot I try to endow it with its own life. This life comes from an active balance of the form's tradition, its use, how I made it the previous time, memories of ones I've seen in the past, ideas I've had but never tried, etc. When I make a group of cups, I recall what I was thinking about in the last series of cups, what I liked and didn't like about them, and what I'd like to try. It’s like this with all of my pots. Some forms change quickly and others slowly, but all are in a state of fluidity. My hope as a studio potter is to make the best work I can - and to find out over time what exactly that means.

City, ST: Southampton, MA

Robert Floyd Photo Gallery is pleased to host the color photography exhibit featuring the natural environment that has received great response from many newspapers articles and visitors to August's Northampton exhibit.

Ms. Mishkind presents 21 refreshing images in her second public exhibit. Her images include people in natural settings, striking landscapes, critters and flowers with a different point of view. Elaine draws her explosive passion for photography from her life as an accomplished violinist, having performed in hundreds of live concerts throughout all New England and beyond.

Elaine Mishkind, of Amherst, drives through the countryside searching for subjects, stops the car and studies her subject's each and every nuance in different lighting, wind and against varying backgrounds. She continually explores different angles and approaches. What separates her from other photographers is her unique talent in playing the image over and over again until she is at one with her subject. Her background for perfection and her joy in expressing her subject's uniqueness create a emotional life style immersed in photography.

"Elaine continues to create non-cookie cutter images each time she ventures out into our world with her camera. To her they are not simply two-dimensional images, but life itself. Her joy is contagious and one is hard pressed to locate as free a creative spirit in photography today," states Robert Floyd. The proof is in this exhibit and the best part of this adventure is there are other images as strong that weren't "invited to the dance." Elaine has achieved her mission, connecting with her subject's delicate strength.

YouthReach Initiative Sponsoring Group Name: Massachusetts Cultural Council
Show Name: YouthReach Initiative
Submission Due Date: Wednesday February 6th, 2008
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.massculturalcouncil.org/applications/yrapp.html
The YouthReach Initiative provides funding to programs that integrate substantive out-of-school arts, humanities and science opportunities into a collaborative community response to the needs of youth at risk.

Guidelines, application forms, and the schedule of information and training sessions are available online.

YouthReach supports innovative programs that:

-- Provide young people with in-depth arts, humanities, or interpretive science experiences that create opportunities to interact directly with practicing artists, humanists and scientists, and to develop techniques or skills for creative inquiry.

-- Demonstrate a clear understanding of young people in need.

-- Demonstrate a clear ability to infuse arts, humanities, or science learning programs with the principles of youth development. See Key Characteristics of Youth Development Programs.

-- Marshal the resources of the community and foster substantive collaboration between cultural organizations and other community institutions addressing young people in need.

The primary applicant for a YouthReach project must be a nonprofit cultural organization or an organization having a strong programming history in the proposal's primary discipline. The next two-year application deadline is February 6, 2008. However, it is never too early to begin laying the groundwork for community-based cultural partnerships.

Open Call for Artists - $3000 Mural Competition in Easthampton
Open Call for Artists - $3000 Mural Competition in Easthampton Sponsoring Group Name: Easthampton City Arts
Show Name: Open Call for Artists - $3000 Mural Competition in Easthampton
Submission Due Date: Wednesday December 12th, 2007
Submission Fees: none
Website: www.EasthamptonCityArts.org
City, ST: Easthampton, MA
Mural will be in the City of Easthampton on a downtown brick wall.

Easthampton City Arts invites artists and/or arts groups to submit a proposal for a mural to be created at 71-77 Cottage Street on the brick wall facing the public parking lot. Funds for the creation of this mural have been awarded Easthampton City Arts by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Local businesses may also help support this project.

What
Design and produce a painted mural with a minimum size of 500 square feet on the brick wall facing the public parking lot at 71-77 Cottage Street and appropriately treat and/or seal the mural for outdoor longevity of a minimum of 10 years. The brick wall will be cleaned and primed by Easthampton City Arts prior to the execution of the mural. The wall is approximately 1,000 square feet.
NOTE: The upper windows may not be painted over. The left bottom window (which is boarded up) is not part of the mural; it will remain advertising space for the adjoining business. The other three boarded up windows may be included in the mural. However, it is possible that they may be transformed into actual windows over the next few years; therefore, any artwork needs to be self-contained with the overall mural able to stand alone if these three sections are replaced with windows.

Content/Theme
The mural should be highly colorful and visible to pedestrians and traffic coming down Cottage Street from the mountain side of Route 141. The theme of the mural is open. The artwork should enhance the building and surrounding environment as well as represent the artistic vitality of Easthampton.

Who
Individual artists, muralists, and art groups who live or work in the Pioneer Valley are encouraged to apply.

Ownership of Image
Easthampton City Arts will jointly own the copyright of the image along with the artist.

Payment
Easthampton City Arts will pay an artist stipend of $3,000, which includes material costs. $500 of the stipend for supplies will be paid upon signed contract; the remainder will be paid upon completion of the mural.

Timeline
All proposals must be received by 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
Notification of results of submissions on Wednesday, December 19, 2007.
Mural, including all sealing, is to be completed by Friday, June 20, 2008.

How
Submit in one package to: Easthampton City Arts, c/o Ellen Koteen, 50 Payson Avenue, Easthampton, MA 01027. (Faxed or email submissions will not be accepted.)
1. A color drawing to scale of your proposed imagery for the mural including text that details materials and weatherproofing that you will be using.
2. Resume(s) and contact information (Artist groups: identify one project manager). Provide your name, address, telephone number, email address and website address if you have a website.
3. Examples of previous work: photos, slides or high-quality color printer outputs (no disc file images).
4. Background information about your art work and/or your group not included above.
5. One page proposal statement about your design (describe design elements) that includes research you may have done on the characteristics of the neighborhood or the city and any input you may have received from local groups or individuals.
6. Self-addressed stamped envelope for return of materials (or they will not be returned!).

Selection
Proposals will be reviewed and chosen by a Jury Committee consisting of members of the Easthampton City Arts Coordinating Committee, the owner(s) of the building, and 2 other artists. The Jury Committee will consider each submission without knowing the name of the individual or group who made the submission.

Easthampton City Arts reserves the right to reject any proposal which, in its judgment, fails to meet the requirements of this Call to Artists or which is incomplete, conditional, or obscure; or which contains irregularities; or in which errors occur; or if determined to be in the best interest of Easthampton City Arts to do so. Easthampton City Arts reserves the right to waive minor discrepancies or permit a proposer to clarify such discrepancies and so conduct discussions with all qualified proposers in any manner necessary to serve the best interests of Easthampton City Arts. Easthampton City Arts may wish to discuss with the artist some revision of the proposed mural before design selection occurs and/or before design is executed.
Artists will be required to enter into a contract with the City of Easthampton to ensure that the project is completed on schedule according to budget and according to the chosen proposal.
Please note: There may be a few local qualified artists willing to assist in the painting process if requested by the artist.
For more information about Easthampton City Arts, see its website at www.easthamptoncityarts.com. For questions about this Call to Artists, email Briana Taylor, Community Outreach Coordinator for Easthampton City Arts, at info@easthamptoncityarts.com.

WFCR's Second Annual Art Mug
Show Name: WFCR 2nd Annual Art Mug Competition
Submission Due Date: Friday October 5th, 2007
Submission Fees: None
Website: www.wfcr.org
City, ST: Amherst, MA
WFCR-FM is seeking submissions for the station's 2nd Annual Art Mug. The mug will be made available to WFCR's contributing listeners during on-air fund drives from October 2007 - June 2008. Artists are invited to submit designs by October 5th.

Specifications

WFCR conducts on-air fund drives over a twelve month period - October, March and May. Seasonal subjects or locations specific to western New England and/or public radio are very desirable.

The printing space is 4 1/8 inches high and 8 5/8 inches wide. The image will wrap around the mug so the design should be pleasing for both left handed and right handed drinkers.

The art will be affixed from a paper decal and then kiln-fired to the preserve color. This is a 4-color sublimation process.

Keep it simple! We will be describing the image for listeners as eloquently as we can to conjure a clear picture in their minds. A complicated concept will result in a verbal muddle on the air!

A caption such as "Designed for WFCR by...2007" in the artist's hand is very desirable. It can run along the side of the image or be incorporated into the design.

We request the design be exclusive for WFCR and that we retain the original art for the permanent collection.

The deadline is October 5, 2007. The design will be decided in-house. You can mail your submission to Christopher Daly - 88.5FM/WFCR - Hampshire House - 131 County Cir - Amherst, MA 01003-9257. Artwork can be sent via email to csdaly@wfcr.org

Smalti is one of the oldest and most original materials of mosaic art. This thick, exquisite glass tile holds light the way no other material can. It is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Venice, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down through the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artists many possibilities to achieve dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day intensive workshop we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6"x6" framed mosaic framed panel. Design, color and composition will also be covered. The class includes tools, handouts, and a beautiful selection of Orsoni Italian smalti. This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced mosaicists who have never worked with smalti. $140 includes materials
