Well it's here. Fall, the most expectant of seasons. The pace is faster. The days are a little shorter, the nights cooler. The U-hauls are in full migration to Amherst and Northampton. Things have to be planned. When Fall comes, you've got to step up your game. And I'm not ready.
The squirrels knew it was coming. Micro-swarms of them have been digging up the yard and packing away their little treasures. It seemed premature. Had there been a conversation with one of their representatives it might have gone like this. Me: "Stop digging up our yard, damnit." Squirrel: "Winter is coming and we have to be ready." Me: "Silly squirrel. It's summertime." As the squirrel bounds away, it looks over its shoulder and delivers a parting shot, "Silly human. Winter will be here soon. And your lawn is in terrible shape anyway." I found the last part to be especially mean-spirited.
Still I persevere in my summer-esque attitude despite increasingly visible signals. Along the Manhan Trail I saw a sugar maple with its leaves turning red. Then a DJ on the radio comments there are less than 90 days until Thanksgiving. "What the hell!?!," I bark in response.
So I call on everyone out there to resist. Resist the Fall. Cling instead to the slower pace of August. Wear white. Wear shorts. Wear white shorts. And keep that summertime attitude going for a little longer. If we band together we can do it. This very week, throughout the valley, there are some great distractions from the inevitable.
As an aside, this also is a new season of The Arts Newsletter Experiment. You'll notice some new features. The newsletter has a new home on Art Walk Easthampton's website, but will continue its Valley-wide focus on the arts.
Submissions are accepted from subscribers using the online form at: http://www.artwalkeasthampton.org/artsnewsletter/ When making a submission, you'll have a chance to preview it before submitting. You'll also receive a link by email that lets you edit the information even after submission. Please use that link when making revisions. And when listing artists on the exhibition/event form, please list just one name per line so that each artist receives recognition in the column to the left. All submissions, including revisions, are due by noon Monday for the Tuesday edition. Thanks!
Event: WFCR 2nd Annual Art Mug Competition Start Date: Tuesday September 4th, 2007 End Date: Friday October 5th, 2007 Location Name: WFCR - Hampshire House Address: 131 County Circle City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:http://www.wfcr.org Fee: None
WFCR-FM is seeking submissions for the station’s 2nd Annual Art Mug. The mug will be made available to WFCR’s contributing listeners during on-air fund drives from October 2007 - June 2008. Artists are invited to submit designs by October 5th.
Specifications
WFCR conducts on-air fund drives over a twelve month period – October, March and May. Seasonal subjects or locations specific to western New England and/or public radio are very desirable.
The printing space is 4 1/8 inches high and 8 5/8 inches wide. The image will wrap around the mug so the design should be pleasing for both left handed and right handed drinkers.
The art will be affixed from a paper decal and then kiln-fired to the preserve color. This is a 4-color sublimation process.
Keep it simple! We will be describing the image for listeners as eloquently as we can to conjure a clear picture in their minds. A complicated concept will result in a verbal muddle on the air!
A caption such as “Designed for WFCR by...2007” in the artist’s hand is very desirable. It can run along the side of the image or be incorporated into the design.
We request the design be exclusive for WFCR and that we retain the original art for the permanent collection.
The deadline is October 5, 2007. The design will be decided in-house. You can mail your submission to Christopher Daly – 88.5FM/WFCR – Hampshire House – 131 County Cir – Amherst, MA 01003-9257. Artwork can be sent via email to csdaly@wfcr.org

Inhabitation: September Exhibit at Gallery A3
Artist:Marianne Connolly, Evelyn Pye Event: Inhabitation Start Date: Thursday September 6th, 2007 Reception: Thursday September 6th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Saturday September 29th, 2007 Location Name: Gallery A3 Address: 28 Amity Street City, ST: Amherst, MA Website:http://www.gallerya3.com Fee: free
Inhabitation is a collaborative exhibition by collagist Marianne Connolly and painter Evelyn Pye. The show is about inhabitation: living within a specific place and inhabiting that place as fully as possible. Each artist has created work based on visits to the other’s site and responding to one another’s depictions of her home landscape.
Evelyn Pye has created a body of work that is based in multiples of the landscape. Each piece is a large grid of small paintings all of the same site from multiple perspectives and points of focus. The work reflects the way people look at landscapes: focusing in, looking wider, reading closely, turning our gaze from right to left and up and down. Thought is often in bits and pieces that collect into a fuller impression. The pieces are large, so there is the sense of the painting in relation to the full body of the viewer, yet each individual painting is small and meant to be read closely.
Marianne Connolly photographs the immediate landscape near her home. Her close and detailed photography reflects the intimate and subjective relationship to land and home. Interested in the change of light over the course of the day, and how moments of perception are unrepeatable, she notates each roll of film with date, time and place. Each collage uses a single roll of film, shot during a single hour. Cut and collaged into grids, these images are like an imperfect record of that particular hour.

Mischa Epstein Alvarado creates collages that are bright, colorful and made for children of all ages, 1 to 100. Her collages are created using handmade paper, beads, buttons, snaps, wood, wine bags and whatever inspires her. Each collage comes from emotions, thoughts, and concepts generally adult in nature, yet what results is a whimsical and childlike piece of art. Each collage reflects special detail, inspiration and techniques, and each has its own story to tell. Each is meant to soar with your imagination while giving you the same feeling of joy she receives from creating them.

I grew up in Western MA and moved around a lot in my undergraduate College years, experiencing personal stories and upheavals that are most likely not uncommon for many people. Through navigating tough terrain I've had to engage with concepts that challenged me and pushed me further from my comfort zone. Through self-examination I have arrived not at a final destination, but at a mid-point. This is a place where I need to look no further- a place where I can breathe and rest. This is what my work is really about.

A native of Westfield, MA, I have been painting for over 20 years. I have studied with Maria Nace, SP, Marcia Reed, Jack Flynn, Catherine Anderson, Tom Lynch, and Louise Currin. I am inspired by color, shape, and simplicity. Most of my paintings are landscape, floral, and abstract themes. It is my personal philosophy that painting should be interpretative, spontaneous and intuitive.

The Silver Swimmers are an awe-inspiring roving street-type performance ensemble based in Western Massachusetts. These silver dancers saturate space with their enchanting movement reminiscent of an underwater imaginal realm. Dressed in originally designed early 1900's era swimming costumes and bathing hats, completely swathed in silver body paint, they silently swim against the pressure of absent water. These ephemeral figures transform a bustling street into a meditational haven.
Influenced by the study of such techniques as Butoh, Contact Improvisation, Continuum and the sciences of the Environment, these performers bring an artistry to their movement that is enchanting and intelligent.
The ensemble exposes a crossover in dimensions- the swimmers live in a land in which the qualities of air and water are reversed. They have broken through the fabric of reality to arrive in our world. Unaware of this fact, the swimmers cannot see the mesmerised crowds. Completely accidentally, they sometimes catch the passers-by in their bubbles.

MARK NOMAD'S music has been heard on radio stations all over the world and has been used in commercials and in film. Nomad's blues have been tempered by years of living and experience - expressed by the plaintive cry of a bottleneck on acoustic guitar or the driving rhythm of an electric band.
Nomad has been acclaimed as a master slide guitarist, a singer-songwriter and a bandleader. Whether performing solo or with his band, Nomad passionately takes the listener on a journey to where the blues have been and where they're going.
Saturdays we will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at night, our only late night hours. We usually will sponsor some type of music. For example, on September 8, we will have New England's own Mark Nomad, reknowned blues guitarist with his new cd in tow, 'Acoustic Land'. He'll have his cd's with him if you want to pick up a copy. He will be playing in the shop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
For our own part, every second Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. we will give free verbal appraisals on vintage instruments, so if you have anything in the attic or cellar, from fretted instruments to violins, we will be happy to give you price quotes. Those who have frequented our repair shop, know it takes a week to get a set-up back, acoustic or electric. With an appointment on that second Saturday we will offer same day set-ups. Either while you wait or drop off and pick up later. Such a deal! Take advantage of it because it only happens once a month and our workshop is usually extremely busy.

I’ve always been interested in the science of light and moving objects.
The universe and it’s movements captured my childhood imagination and the more I learned the more fascinated I became.
I picked up paper and paint and let my imagination fly. Throughout my art education colors and feelings became meaningful. I fell in love with the fauves and impressionist period. For me, their use of color elicited feelings of time and place.
Working in the theater all my life has expanded my palate and offered new opportunities of expressions with dancers and movement. To capture a moving object wasn’t as important as capturing the feeling of movement. The dances of life as it were.
So it is through time, movement and hues that my photoscapes come alive. I try to capture not only the feeling of movement but the emotion and give it to you, the viewer to touch.

Easthampton Intersections: Farmlands & Factories
A remarkable number of opportunities exist in Easthampton due to its distinctive past as both an agricultural center and an industrial town. While the uses of these spaces have evolved over the years, Easthampton possesses singular access to 'rural' and 'labor' traditions. Through utilizing local farms, conservation land, working and converted industrial buildings, citizens of Easthampton have an insight into many facets of New England history that can be explored through the arts and other cultural events.

“Getting Closer to Flora and Others...Images from Green World”
Over the past year, I have been creating 'scanographs', using my flatbed scanner as my camera and 3-dimensional materials as my subjects, to produce high resolution images from nature. Post-scan, I edit in Photoshop to create detailed compositions that portray essences, often revealing the less-seen. Owing to my interests in ecology, foraging and gardening, I possess an intimate knowledge of 'green world' in the Pioneer Valley. I strive to share that with others through my art, among other ways. Subjects include wild plants/mushrooms and vegetables. Recurring themes include sensuality, balance, change, beauty in things overlooked and playfulness. I will include a few photographs in this exhibit, as well.

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, from 5 pm – 8 pm, Easthampton artist Marty Klein will have an opening reception for a solo exhibition of his scanographic and photographic images, titled “Getting Closer to Flora and Others...Images from Green World”, at the Apollo Grill, 116 Pleasant Street (Eastworks), Easthampton, MA.
Marty Klein is an environmentalist, naturalist and consultant who has been photographing and observing the natural world for decades. Over the past year, he has been creating 'scanographs', using a flatbed scanner as his camera and 3-dimensional materials from nature as subjects, to produce high resolution, striking images from nature. The image capture is enhanced by intensive editing in the “digital darkroom” to create distinctive, detailed compositions that portray essences, often revealing the less-seen.
Drawing on his interests in ecology, foraging and gardening, Klein possesses an intimate knowledge of 'green world' in the Pioneer Valley. He strives to share that with others, through these scanographs, among other ways. Subjects include plants, mushrooms, local vegetables and the unusual. "Religious Icons" Photography by Bruce Barone
Artist:Bruce Barone Event: "Religious Icons" Photography by Bruce Barone Start Date: Saturday September 8th, 2007 Reception: Saturday September 8th, 2007 @ 5:00 PM End Date: Saturday October 13th, 2007 Location Name: AWENTREE Address: 102 Cottage Street City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:http://BruceBarone.com Fee: None
An artist once asked me, “Bruce, what’s your favorite photograph.”
I answered, “I have favorites, of course, but my most favorite image is always the next photograph.
In this series of images at Awentree I believe a sense of prayer, or astonishment, pervades the photographs and I hope the viewer sees what I see; the wonder, awe, beauty and the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Often, I ask myself "What am I called to do?" And "How can I make the world a better place."
To paraphrase Rumi;I need to be permanently astonished. I need to love; draw upon love for vision and energy. And the third thing is sacrifice--give the drop that is myself. To be astonished;to be nourished by being amazed—and by giving.
Photography is my passion. I celebrate life--the spiritual ties that bind us together and I do this by trying to be astonished. Simone Weil said: "Absolute attention is prayer."
When I photograph an icon I both draw upon my degree in art history and years working as a documentary photographer and in a profound sense I also forget the past , turn toward the icon in a prayerful manner and I become astonished.
Tielhard de Chardin wrote: "Seeing: We might say that the whole of life lies in that verb - if not ultimately, at least essentially."
We design the world by the way we choose to see it. I choose to see beauty and to share that wonder, that astonishment with you.

Astrid Sheckels: Recent Work in Oil and Watercolor
Event: Astrid Sheckels Start Date: Saturday August 25th, 2007 End Date: Saturday September 29th, 2007 Location Name: Elusie gallery Address: 43 Main Street City, ST: Easthampton, MA Website:http://www.eastmontgallery.net
Astrid Sheckels is a 2004 graduate from Greenfield Community College. She works out of her studio in Greenfield, in an old factory building with a beautiful view out over a waterfall on the Green River. The work shown in this exhibit includes recent still life, portraits and landscapes. In Astrid's words:
" The watercolor landscapes portray some of the places that I love best. They depict snow covered New England farms – so familiar to me – and the rugged beauty of Montana with its big sky and open space – where my father was born. They capture the stunning beauty of bare tree branches and an early morning in a small village in Denmark – my mother’s homeland and mine – as well as the blue water, rolling red roads and hay fields of Prince Edward Island – which surprisingly feels like home.
The still life paintings are oil on canvas. In each one I focused on the play of light on the subject, on creating depth and a sense of place. As in the “Sewing Room”, I allow the background to remain indistinct in order to draw the viewers’ eyes back to the subject.
The portraits are oil or watercolor. When painting a portrait it is important for me to get to know the person, so that the portrait does not just reflect their outer and physical appearance, but also captures part of their character and values. "

Zea Mays Printmaking is proud to host our 4th annual juried artists’ book exhibition as part of Museums’ 10 BookMarks program.
BookMarks ZMP, juried by Ruth R. Rogers, Special Collections Librarian, Wellesley College showcases a broad range of interpretations of the artist’s book, from contemporary expressions to more traditional structures, with the common denominator being that each of the books incorporates hand printmaking. Some of the books are built around textual narratives or poems, while others are purely visual experiences. The books being shown in our studio Gallery are for sale, and range from one-of-a-kind visual books to illustrated letterpress editions. Artists whose books will be on exhibition come from all over the United States and Canada and include: Ashlee Weitlauf, Mary Taylor, Margaret Jean Taylor, Anita S. Hunt, Martha Galuszka, Steven C. Daiber, Tara O’Brien, Marvel Maring, Ginger Burrell, Brian borchardt, Nicole Dore Brunet, Melissa kaup-Augustine, Sun Young Kan, Annie Zeybekoglu and Nancy Diessner.
BookMarks ZMP presents viewers with the rare opportunity to handle the books on exhibit. Artist’s books are usually displayed in closed cases and actually “reading” them is not possible. At Zea Mays Printmaking, visitors are invited to take the books off the shelves and explore them fully at their own pace.

The three photographers represented here -- Jerome Liebling, Chester Michalik, and my friend Frank Ward -- are connected in at least three important ways.
First, they possess the compassion, perspective, and wisdom to have thought to focus their lenses for extended periods on the human toll of war and conflict.
Second, they have brought to this daunting theme a contemplative impulse -- the world view of the thinking man and woman -- due, in part, to their long affiliations with institutions of higher learning, including colleges such as Amherst, Hampshire, Holyoke Community, and Smith.
Finally, they hail from the Pioneer Valley, an enlightened region when it comes to sounding the alarm in times of national conflict, a place that seems to breed progressive, clear-eyed citizens who, since the days of the American Revolution, up through the Vietnam War and the current-day conflict in Iraq, have been willing to ask the hard, deep questions.
Here, then, is their group effort, "Conflicts." Regard what their eyes have seen: the sacrifice and sorrow, the humanity and even the poetry amid the horror.
And take heed, for their imagery speaks volumes.

Beginning September 4, the William Blizard Gallery presents installation artist Chris Nelson. Using both galleries, Chris will exhibit two new site-specific installations that contrast against the fast-paced, over stimulating media world in which we live. This subtle and minimal work allows viewers to focus, appreciate and enjoy the simplicities of light, shadow, sound and movement. The exhibit will run through October 12, with a reception September 14, 5:00 – 7:00pm.
Working in a direct and minimal way, Chris emphasizes the subtleties of daily observations and often incorporates the essence of nature into his work through a synthetic means. His installations have been described as “peaceful and relaxing,” “mesmerizing in a calming way,” and “delicate and powerful.” These two installations use thin strips of lightweight mill plastic and air currents, focusing intently on the bare minimum while staying aesthetically pleasing. This is in response to our current environment of high-tech media and stimulating gadgets that seem to fill every available spare moment. Instead, Nelson creates a serene and ephemeral space for viewers to spend time in.

Sojourns: Near and Far Opens at Jasper Rand Art Museum
Artist:Marcia Reed Event: Sojourns: Near and Far; Works of 2004-2007 Start Date: Tuesday September 4th, 2007 Reception: Saturday September 8th, 2007 @ 1:00 PM End Date: Saturday September 29th, 2007 Location Name: Jasper Rand Art Museum, Westfield Athenaeum Address: 6 Elm Street City, ST: Westfield, MA Website:http://www.marciareedpainting.com Fee: None
Over the thrity years that I have known Marcia, I have watched her painting develop a kind of language, like a sort of visual poetry. Each panting invites the viewer to enter its world with all the senses heightened. Unlike a mere visual photograph or postcard of some natural setting, these paintings are sensual memories of nature. The viewer can almost smell the air, feel its moisture, or sense the sun's warmth. Atmosphere and evocative, these paintings are not nostalgic or simplistic views of nature. There is a range of emotion in these works, from moody and forboding to brilliant and exhilarating, that begs the viewer to participate. Some of the unusual night scenes seem at once to be both comforting and disturbing. The sun is celebrated in every possible manner, with force and beauty.
Perhaps the most powerful part of Marcia's works, though, is the motion she brings to each scene. It often seems that the confines of the canvas or paper barely contain the forces of nature within. The most serene landscapes seem live with movement. These paintings show vividly that nature is not static orindifferent. Each painting is a promise that something is about to happen. Like poetry, they speak to the heart and spirit.
